This bicycle has a Unite MY1018Z 450W 24V motor attached to the cranks. The motor has a 7.18:1 gear reduction built into the motor itself, and there is an addtional 4:1 reduction from the motor to the cranks. I have a special freewheeling crank system that allows the motor to turn the chain and the pedals to remain stationary. I also have a Megarange freewheeling sprocket in which the smallest gear has 14 teeth, and the largest is 34 teeth. This gearing allows for a maximum speed of 28mph. Normal cruising is around 20 mph with no hills or wind. The beauty of this system is that I can use my bicycle's six gears to match road conditions. The motor sprocket has a freewheel so that if I pedal without the motor, there is no drag caused by the motor itself.
Check out my video for making the freewheel sprocket on the motor: • Homemade Freewheel Spr...

That is Beautiful Country! and Congrats on the GREAT!! Build!! People who do not build custom things.. especially for bikes.. that have enough moving parts before we start adding to them! LULZ! have no idea the hours needed to perfect a custom creation. I LOVE YOUR BIKE!! Your next motor cage / holder / frame you could use PVC Pipe 1/2" to big, cut down the middle and add rubber to stabilize and protect from vibration.. not only the rider but as well the unit with is ridge enough.

Nice job on building your bike. I built my bike using a Chinese built 1000w brushless motor in the front hub. I also use Lipo ( 6 to 8 5000 mah 6 cell). The system works well except it came with a cheap rim, which could not take much pounding and after traveling over 1200 miles it was pretty much bent out of shape which ruined a tire. Switched to an older solid steel rim it is a little heavier, but more durable. Keep up the good work.

Only the average KZfaq idiot would not see the pedals on the bike and make ignorant, negative comments about you getting stranded. The batteries died? YOU PEDAL THE FREAKING BIKE. What's so hard to figure out here? I think you did a great job putting this together. Neat, clean, and functional. If the motor is DC, is there a way you could reverse the wires with a switch and use it to pedal and charge the batteries? Most DC motors will produce current when they're spun backwards.

Super set up. I have the MY1016Z2 with 9.78 reduction. Trying to figure out a similar set up with round tube frame. Found some perfect fitting U-bolts and bed frames from the dump supply fairly decent angle iron. Lithium polymer batteries are great. Maybe I can use the same ones I use for my RC plane (3000 Mah) for a start. Planning to run the chain directly to one of the 3 front gears already on the bike since I probably won't need all 21 gears once the motor is doing part of the work.

From my understanding, which is very limited, it takes 4x the amount of energy to go twice as fast and wind resistance goes up exponentially with speed very rapidly. It might also be worth your while and provide a lot of information to potential adopters to do varying tests, 10mph, 15mph, etc. I think I misspoke about 1/2 the wind resistance, it would probably be substantially less at 10MPH than at 20MPH. Thanks.

Put a cotton ball on the mic on the camera it cuts the wind noises. You could passively charge up your bike by adding an extra wire and a large diode to the motor feed wire to back feed into the battery when you peddle the bike. This way it bypasses the controller and you can recharge passively without sending power into the motor directly.

Hey Hutch, Great bike! I am designing a similar bike and was considering putting the electric drive sprocket on the other crank so that it makes the build much simpler. Is there any reason why you decided to put all of the cogs together on the same crank and not use the other side for the electric drive? Also, what are your thoughts on the power of the motor? Hey hutch transfer, I don't know if this was mentioned but have you considered adding a peddle generator or even a friction generator to give a little bit of a charge back to the battery while riding? and thanks for explaining every great vid
@hutchtransfer
@hutchtransfer 8 жыл бұрын
+Josh Wail It takes a lot of energy to charge the batteries. The amount of resistance created during charging would make the bike harder to pedal and the energy you get in return is negligible. If you are in decent shape you can produce around 80 watts of energy by pedaling, so it would take about 5 to 10 times longer to recover the energy you are getting out than it was to spend it. Regenerative braking, however, does charge the battery but it only extends your range by about 10%.

If you put a 1500W motor onto the chain rings/bb, you'd probably rip the chain rings apart. It might also crack your seat tube or down tube, wherever you happen to try mounting it. You could also end up just breaking the bike's chain or ripping the back rim out of the slots. Don't laugh, it happens to the hub motors all the time.

My motor is 450W and it the top speed is around 20mph on the flat. Uphills in the slowest gear it will do about 5mph. Normal cruising is around 17mph. If you want higher speeds then you will need to get a more powerful motor.

***** Thanks for the answer! Well my question is whether the amount of Watt is enough to tell you what a motor can do, or whether there are more parameters one has to consider . Kind of a physics question.
@hutchtransfer
@hutchtransfer 10 жыл бұрын
Watts will give you a good starting point as to the power of the motor. However if you have any sort of gearing on the motor then the power will increase. My system uses the bicycle's gears, so even a 450W motor can propel me up a 10% grade, however only at 5 mph. To go up a hill at faster speeds would require a more powerful motor.

Genius, it's 2016 and Bafang, as one of the best BB kits out there still can't be mounted on a crankset with multiple chainrings, that I think would've made it ultimate EB kit. as you can pull most from the motor, for steep and speed.

Thank you, I know quite a lot of kits out there now, but that still doesn't makes it less genius, you made it in 2012 :), thinking of a way if possible to mount multiple chainring crankset on a BBSHD, cuz that has very fast RPM cadence with smaller chainring for commuting and then little power for steep hills with big chainring. don't think I want the cyclone 3000 though.
@TimpBizkit
@TimpBizkit 3 жыл бұрын
The Bafang would mash up a front derailleur in the hands of a novice. Before I got a shift sensor, I was changing gear using one of the brakes to cut the motor. I've climbed 20% gradients in the 52 tooth chainring BBS02B with a 32-12 cassette, but I did have to pedal hard to help the motor out. It did actually climb without it but it was under a lot of load (the bike did about 9 mph instead of 14-15 with pedaling). I think if you can put a 48 tooth on there with a 40-11 cassette you will have enough range for everything and can always drop to a 32 tooth for steep climbs if you don't care about going 40+.

I like your set up of your bike, I have the same motor for my bike, but then back rim got messed up, on the right side I have my normal 7 gear freewheel for peddleing and on the left side I have a single speed feel wheel, the single speed freewheel striped off over the winter, so I put the motor in my kids power wheels, luckily it has a metal from so I put 12 inch bicycle tires on the back, just chain driven on one wheel, that power wheels was very fast and powerful, anyway I was doing some repairs and dropped a hammer on the motor and then when I went use the motor again it didn't work, so I took the motor apart and figure out the 4 magnets came loose, sled you know if it's possible to Re glue the magnets in or even self tapping screws

I imagine you could re-glue the magnets, although I have never tried this.

Hey so I finally got around to fixing my motor, I just used jb weld to glue the magnets back in place, I didn't think it would work but it did spin when i touched the wires of my battery , i haven't mounted the motor to my bike yet and tested it it with load but I think it will be fine, so what my plan is to have my motor run on my 7 gear freewheel that is on the right side of my rim hub, and on the left side of my rim hub is my single speed, I switched my crank arms around so I will pedal the single speed and the motor will run the righ side with gears, so I don't really understand gear ratio though so I thought you have a good understand of gear ratio, what do you think would be better have my motor with the 9 tooth sprocket run right to he 7 gear sprocket or should I kinda do what you did and make a single speed sprocket adapt on the motor and then have the sprocket go right to the 7 gear freewheel, I would like to ompletely copy your design but I dont have a triple chain rim and the bigger freewheel gear attached to the triple

That was my thought exactly. Of course, you are saying you get 10MPC/pack and they say up to 20mpc (with about the same watt hours). Even with a less efficient motor, I should think that this setup is orders of magnitude more efficient. I think the hub motor people say 20mpc with peddle assist, are you getting that with no peddling? Also what is the total cost of this setup - battery pack and bicycle? How much do you weigh? How much is a battery pack going to cost? Thanks, I'd appreciate it.

Ok this makes MUCH more sense. Also, I confirmed that UP TO 20 miles is with a lot of peddle assist and most of them don't get anywhere near 20mile range and you are talking 100% electric range with the exception of getting up to speed. I am also considering a heavy cheap dept store bike with full suspension (to absorb the vibration of a 2stroke motor) an a gas motor. MUCH cheaper.. Do you recon that you can get enough recharges to recover the battery cost vs gasoline?

Hi Hutch, what method do you use to monitor those Zippy's? Does your controller cut power at the appropriate voltage or do you use a cell monitoring device like Cellog 8?

hey hutchtransfer, I was wondering if this motor overheats for you? I have the same one and it heats up pretty quickly. Do you have any idea of how I can cool it? Maybe if I drill some holes in the back of it for some more convection?

Ashwin Ramdas The only time I have had the motor overheat was if I was doing continuous climbing on steeper grades with no pedaling. Putting that much strain on the motor is not good and will cause it to overheat. Therefore I always pedal with the motor in that case. For normal riding on the flats I have had no problems of overheating. In order to make more cooling, I have drilled holes in the outer back case for ventilation. I have seen people do that on endless sphere. I have not had any problems

Okay i just wanted to make sure it was safe to drill the back. I didn't want to drill too deep and ruin the wiring inside

Ashwin Ramdas Don't drill it while its together. The shavings will end up inside the motor and that could ruin it. You need to take it apart. Be careful because there are spring loaded brushes in the back and they could go flying if you open it up too quickly. The following link describes part of the process. visforvoltage.org/forum-topic/testing/421-moderator-testing-o1-chain-wheel-motor-my1018

***** Oh okay. I have been having trouble taking the back off the motor. Something is preventing it from opening. I've unscrewed all the screws in the back and have tried popping it off but the back won't pop off

Ashwin Ramdas There is a bearing in the back plate you would be removing. Sometimes the bearing is tight on the axle. You need to use a little bit of force to pull off the back part. Here is another thread showing the motor being drilled for cooling: endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2163

Great! Now attach a 49cc 4 stoke engine to electric engine sprocket, a engine management system, a regenerative electric braking system and you got Honda's IMA technology!!!

Also how complex would it be to have regenerative braking.
