I don’t agree the dealer is “off the hook”. The owner claimed they wanted to sell her a used engine! Thanks to you and a referral which was based on your good reputation, the Honda owner received competent and honest service. The dealer should be ashamed at the least, and they owe some sort of compensation, if only an apology and I think a full refund of the last repair bill Honda received payment. I’ve seen this too many times over many years, and every time I’m amazed how incompetency is so common. I think I’m being kind. Good job ERIC. You restore not only broken machines to working order, honestly and faithfully, you restore trust that there are good people, that work diligently. Well done!

Remember when I was younger doing the DIYer stuff we use to do (I'm 60 now), you know the oil changes, plugs, points, starters, alternators, belts, etc and how now, I can only do the oil change or air filters, the simple stuff. Point is, even though you have a lift, quality power tools, analyzers , and stuff that may make it look easy , I am well aware that it is not easy. Sure you get a few piece of cake jobs, but more often than not, that time bent over them hoods or trying to contort your body so you can get at a particular part or whatever is not unnoticed. Nor is it not thought of the price you may invest in your tools/equipment/etc , which I'm quite sure a particular major tool would take a good while to recoop that cost of it. You have the best auto/truck repair channel on here in my opinion , so thanks again !

Well points have vanished, plugs last a lot longer, and really most of the items you mention are easy enough to do, just under covers and the belts have different tighteners. Of course, depending on the engine configuration different parts can be harder to do. My car needs the timing belt to be removed to do the water pump, some cars it's much simpler. Also MUCH more information on how to do things.

Either the cash register is ringing or the kids are chasing each other around again, with the dogs in tow. Lol I wish I could have done what Eric is doing and I wouldn't change a thing, kids or dogs. I just hope Mrs O sticks with it because she seems a little overwhelmed at times. I do totally understand she is handling a full time job, taking care of a home, while raising and coordinating a families daily activities. The work load she has (not Mrs O abilities) is the weak link in this whole thing. That's a lot of work for anyone. The same goes for Eric. In the old days everyone used to work in the family business. But life was a lot simpler then and a lot less complicated also, so it was possible back then. Now days I think a little help with those mundane chores, that don't involve any family or parent child time is necessary, to do a good job. I don't believe in nannys flat out. So hire her a home helper once or twice a week, to do all that stuff that takes away from any together time. Such as house cleaning and clothes washing. Picking up dinner out or shopping for the weekly necessities. Paint the garage or clean out the gutters. Even shoveling snow and mowing the grass if you don't involve the children. Have them do the things that family members don't do with each other. Also do not involve them in any family outings or activities, or even something like cooking dinner or making the beds if your a mom that likes to involve the kids in that chore. You'll be surprised how much pressure this will relieve, even if you set the amount of help to a minimum. Imagine how nicer it would be when the unexpected things arise if you don't have to worry about fitting in those extra chores or items. And you don't have to hire professionals for a lot of the outside things. Hire teens and college students for the mowing or garage painting. The things they can do will be cheaper than a professional. Keep up the hard work, both of you and thanks again for the videos Eric. Jpol

Nice job getting her back on the raod. Yeah, nah, valves don't bend by themselves. I got a theory though. That dealer tech put the belt on wrong, turned it over by hand, bent the valve, realized he was off the mark somewhere, put it on right, and pretended like nothing happened.

Yeah this is what I thought and maybe he even bumped the starter a little. I think ever who the mechanic is he most likely wasn't a very good one. I ran my own shop for a couple years I was never certified or anything and I kept getting people coming to me telling me they always used the shop down the road because he was a certified mechanic. But I was always having to fix his screw ups. And one day I went to visit him and on the front of the building lived a big sign we are all certified mechanics. I asked him what was he certified to do and it was breaks. Lol.

@bobbyd9583
@bobbyd9583 5 жыл бұрын
turning by hand easily bend a valve if you put any pressure on it. there is a lot of mechanical leverage. And part of the timing belt install process on most hondas has you moving the engine over a few times to ensure proper timing belt alignment and tension. I have had a few rookie techs bend some valves that I had to pay for.

Very nice work, Eric. You saved that customer's bacon - that has got to feel good. Lately, I have been hearing more stories of dealership "mis-management" of customers vehicles & funds. Family members paying outrageous sums of money for vehicles brought in for minor repairs. I am beginning to think this is a systemic problem in the industry. Customers really need some advocates when faced with outrageous repair quotes, and I think channels like this help educate folks. Back in the early 1970's my Auto shop teacher told us that we were similar to Doctors and need to spot the symtoms of the problem before tearing things apart and running up a big bill . I.E. Gas issue for the motor....start at the fuel line to clear it, then fuel pump test , then fuel filter check , next is the carb . Bad battery....test alternator , test voltage regulator , test connections, voltage flow through battery ...then carbon pile battery for load limits.

A trick I use on belts and o-ings that have stretched, especially after having been exposed to solvents, is to heat them with a hair dryer. Lay them down on a clean flat paper towel with something heavy and round inside, maybe 1/4 inch tall and a little less in diameter than the o-ring (such as a jam jar lid) and heat them up with hot air in a circular motion. The lid keeps them from blowing away. They always shrink in diameter.

You are correct not to let it run for long without coolant, as the likes of the mechanical seal in the coolant recirculation pump would become toast same relies on coolant fluid film across those seal faces thus it could heat up, crack or score and then leak later...Great Upload...

Yeah I've heard that sound before and it wasn't good. I put a set of spark plugs in my mother's SUV and when I started the truck up after the job it sounded like someone was beating it with a sledge hammer. It was just a coincidence but it broke a wrist pin and piston, nothing I did caused it. Best me and another mechanic could figure was an injector was staying open and leaking fuel in the cylinder and that little bit of extra fuel caused a hydraulic lock and bent the wrist pin.

You have plenty of chance to make a fast buck out of your customers but instead, you go out of your way to save them money, do the right thing, find the cheaper alternative fix & the right way to get them coming back to you time & time again - 'cos they trust you. Main dealers are the same over here, sadly, so a trusted independent mechanic will win every time. WELL DONE, YOU!

@Geno yes. It's a guarantee. Valves do not bend because of carbon build up. The tech that did the timing belt screwed up. Even one tooth off on the timing belt can do it and I believe those cam gears have more than one mark. That's why you ALWAYS roll the engine over by hand ( with the spark plugs out) after assembly but before the first start. That said, you can bend a valve by hand too, that's why you do it with the plugs out. It should turn over without any resistance at all for at least two full crankshaft rotations.

Lots of PULL there. :) I think you did a great job working, T/shooting, and fixing that lady's car. IMHO, the dealership mechanic turned this engine over with it incorrectly timed resulting in two bent valves, corrected his mistake to cover his a** then sent the car to the customer. I've seen cylinders running with low compression plenty of times resulting in oil consumption on that cylinder because, without proper compression, the rings don't seal as they should. It's mighty noble of you to not publically blame this on the mechanic, but that just shows you're a man of character. If I ever stop doing my own work, I'll be coming several hundred miles to see you.

When those valves were installed at the factory they were not bent and the dealer was the only one that had worked on this car, so really that's the only explanation that makes sense.

Mr. Eric O. I honestly have to say that your series of videos is comparable to watching an "edge of your seat" tv show. For example, this three parter, was filled with nail-biting suspense and action. But, it also highlighted on complexity and the "conflict between man and machine". Yet, there was no need for un-necessary violence or profanity. It was wholesome and honest along with being highly infomative and educational. You displayed emotion. Yet, on que, you still delivered them provebial comedic chops without hestation. You oozed such poise and integrity and I watched intently from beginning to end and I quite certainly feel satisfied with my viewing experience. Me: standing proudly, slow clap starting with me.. You deserve an Emmy Mr. O. The "O" must be for Outstanding!! 2 thumbs up Sir! 5 stars, A++ Hahaha!

Honda tech here, every time I have to replace those piston rings (service bulletin for fouled plugs 1-3 and sometimes 4) I just about crap my pants torquing those head bolts. I also see that 17 mil bolt stripped a lot from previous repairs. It’s not hard to avoid that however, just start the two 14 mils and then the 17 mil by hand then run ‘em home. Anyway I’ve never seen the machining process so what you did show was pretty cool thanks for taking us along!

Feeler gauges, getting the feel...use a micrometer with a clutch on it and "tighten" it on the the feeler and slide it back and forth. Should have about that resistance on the valve. I've noticed on motorcycle valves or automotive valves too I'm sure that if the feeler isn't inserted very parallel the "feel" isn't right, so straight in is important as well. Great vid thanks. I like watching this more than netflix. Consider yourself entertaining.

That’s a good tip. So is checking with the next feeler size up. Also, he has a cool tool that both adjusts and locks down the gap. I have an old 911 and doing the #6 intake valve takes me forever. You can’t see it, you need a seriously bent feeler gauge, and there’s little room for tools in that back (okay front) right corner.

or lube what should not be and don't loctite should be should. I like independent mechanics, but too many of them don't have enough experience with the kind of cars they accept or so not have paid access to the factory service manuals. It is like working from Haynes manuals. Yes, you can tear it part and put it back together, but not necessarily into the same condition as the manufacturer intended.

I never warmed up to it either - even the old Eldorados and Toronados from the 60's and 70's were mounted front to rear, though like three inches or so to one side to allow for the transmission. Im 57 and cant let go of my idea of what a car should be. I want ENGINES not motors. But my day was a few generations apart from whats on the market now.

..You have engines! A conventional (go away Tesla) automobile has an engine. An engine "converts" energy ( gas, diesel, etc) to produce motion, a motor "requires" energy (electricity, steam, etc) to produce motion. I know, I know, the English language interchanges these definitions quite a bit, the most famous being steam engine. It is actually a steam motor, but nobody says that! Oh well, there you have it. It is what it is.
@aussiebloke609
@aussiebloke609 7 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't it be a steam "engine", since it's converting the energy in the coal to make it run? The steam is just an interim step between combustion and motion, a way to get that energy from the fire and to the pistons.

If it's any consolation, I think I've spent more time with you than my wife in the last 6 months working on her 13 Pilot that had a burnt exhaust valve 1st, (thus the all new counterfeit OEM timing belt components I used....) soooooo..... now I'm back into it again when the timing belt busted and smashed valves. After doing this whole operation twice now in the last 6 months, I can tell you the worst part of the whole head removal process in my opinion is the flippin' exhaust manifold studs. Still not sure how 2 times through I haven't stripped or broke one off....though I DID put 4 of them in tight before I realized I forgot the gasket so I got to do it one whole other time. Anyway I'm loopy from the brake cleaner just wanted to say thanks for great videos. Cheers!
