It must really be frustrating as an artist to be advised-to the point of being forced to make music “that sells” but at the end, it didn’t sell.

Britney is the biggest example to me. The moments she does what's SHE wants are her most fan and critically loved. However her charisma and personality shines so hard that she made bubblegum pop hers in the 90s. I want her to continue in the lane of glory and chase what SHE wants. Shes always experimented but it's like her label and team is scared of her and thus control every aspect of her career and life. Same went for MJ especially when he owned alot of sonys catalog, prince during the symbol era, and george michael suing his label

A TRAP! The trap that has a lot of artists suffer, be it the ones who don't sell whose dreams were rearranged into a frankenpopstar that couldn't do anything effective or the ones who hit the big time and therefore have their money eaten by labels trying to pay themselves back for frankenmessing up other people's dreams. A TRAP!

Having a loyal fan base is super valuable considering die-hard fans are the ones that will go out of their way to buy vinyls and CD’s instead of just streaming a song sometimes. They are the ones to buy merchandise and even drive for hours to see their faves live in concert. This will actually give the career longevity, not chasing radio plays 🤷🏼‍♀️

Yes!!! For example, Michael Jackson is from the late 60s but his fanbase is so loyal and protective to this day and he is gaining more younger generations fans. They are keeping his albums still on the charts, his sales and streamings are way ahead compared to other legacy artists like Madonna, Prince, and more than some current successful artists. So, fanbase does play a role in artists' relevancy.

With Ariana Grande, the case is different. She is completely capable of bringing the house down by being a vocalist, with just a mic, like she did at her first AMAs performance. However, she CHOOSES to be performer and do choreography, use stage props and outfit changes. Not to mention her recent songs don't showcase her vocals that well. When I think of a big, dramatic and impactful VOCAL performance, I think of tattooed heart, honeymoon avenue, thinking bout you and just a little bit of your heart. I believe she can qualify as both types and she therefore oscillates between these two facets of her artistry. Likewise with Taylor Swift, but with singer-songwriter/performer. She often puts on grand performances (1989 tour, Reputation tour, artist of the decade performance), but emotional acoustic performances is where she shines as a songwriter (e.g. the long pond studio sessions, all too well). She is capable of emotionally moving people with just a mic and a guitar, like a true songwriter. Mariah Carey is one of the rare cases where the vocal skills and the songwriting skills are equally prolific. People don't appreciate the latter enough.

What I love about Taylor is that she is not the greatest vocalist but: her singing abilities as a songwriter are WAY better than the songwriting abilities of a performer. Like, she is a good singer even though she is a songwriter first, and artists that are just performers can't write a song at all. And she produces, puts on a hell of a show and plays instruments BTW, I think people underestimate her singing abilities sometimes. But then again, she is one of the greatest without her being recognized for it so I'll let it slide

There are so many great songs like Dance Again and Ring that would have been terrific singles. Also Souvenir from the deluxe is a brilliant song - wasted potential. Taylor Swift is excellent at promoting herself and building a strong connection with her fanbase (through secret sessions, "swiftmas," constantly replying to her fans' tweets and such). Even during the 2016 "scandal" when everyone cancelled her for being framed, her fans stuck with her through thick and thin. She makes excellent and catchy songs, has versatility of voice, fleshes out the b-sides in her album (her b-sides are actually considered better than her singles by her fans, which served to add to her longevity), gives a lot to her fans, is hilarious and well-spoken/intelligent, she gathers new fans every time she releases music and her old fans always stay. She's definitely going to last very long. In addition, the new generation of artists will definitely reference her name time and time again as someone who inspired them. her name will become inescapable. she's probably going to go down as a legend.

@Lex Baker Yea and it also just makes the loyal fans you do have feel bad if something "flops". As a singular fan you cant do much about it and it kinda hurts when one of your favorite musicians always makes you feel down bc your support was "not enough". You should really focus on the fans and community you do have. Like, Im sure there are absolute Bebe Rexha STANS out there - but always setting unrealistic streaming/views goals and posting about not reaching them really sucks the entertainment and genuine passion for music out of an artist - it destroys the illusion and people just start to follow someone else.

@Watermelon Ice It does showcase her vocals but differently. I get what you mean because she's not constantly belting like she used to do. And while I do miss that, there are other ways to showcase your vocal talent. On her most recent albums her lows, her whistles and her HARMONIES are showcased a lot. That's another aspect of her vocals. Also it's not like she completely stopped doing the type of singing I think you're reffering to. On "Off the table", "My hair" or "POV" she is singing singing but unlike her previous albums, she is not doing this on nearly every song so I do get what you're saying.

I have deep respect for singer-songwriters. I view them as the most talented artists in the industry with a ton and dedicated fans (Taylor Swift, The Weeknd, Lorde). Performers are among the most iconic singers in the world. They are honestly what makes the industry such a staple in pop culture (Ari, Beyoncé, Dua). The silent majority acts like Maroon 5 and Imagine Dragons are kinda mixed. They can release duds but still sell remarkably well. Everyone else tends to fall in those non-descript area (Bebe, Anne Marie, DaBaby, etc.)

When Bebe said she didn’t follow the mold, I think she must’ve meant that she went from just being a songwriter to then getting a record deal and release her three EPs and then start working on her albums. The mold would probably be how Taylor Swift, Britney Spears or Ariana Grande started, they got a record deal and the first thing they started working on, was their debut album, they didn’t give their voices or lyrics to someone else for years and then start releasing a few songs for another few years until they get the opportunity to release their debut album.

Bring Me The Horizon would also definitely go in that category you put Frank Ocean in, a lot of people can’t name a single song from them but people still know the band and their cult following (which I will forever be proud to say I was a part of, if BMTH ever becomes a household name) has progressively gotten bigger since 2013, 8 million monthly listeners may not seem like a lot but for a rock band who didn’t have their prime in the 80s, 90s, or 2000s those are ridiculous numbers, hope they’ll become stars at some point because they’re easily one of the most exciting somewhat mainstream acts around now, especially with last year’s masterpiece (and in my opinion, 2020’s AOTY), Post Human

This is what I found in BTS’ music, plus greatly in-depth lyricism. Been a casual listener of whatever music that will come noticeable and catch my attention (Also, I’m not a person who looks out and follows trend). Let say it has a nice beat and melody, it will stay in my ears and I will sing it whether it’s an artist from my home country or international but usually at most it stays as that, just in my ears. What I would say that I love the song if it is something that had touched me emotionally at a certain extent, and this is quite rare, and I’m not really into songs about love which is what most of the songs are all about nowadays. At first it was like that with BTS coz I only usually hear the popular ones i.e. title tracks and I was not paying attention to the lyrics. I’ve been aware of BTS for 2 yrs and been a casual fan until I encountered a comforting melody which apparently their B-side song, I searched for that and found the lyric video and then… I was a crying mess, then I had a BTS b-sides buffet, it was a roller coaster of emotions, diss tracks to comfort songs with diverse genres, that’s when I’ve become so invested in learning about them and became an army. I’m not sure if you’re already familiar with them, if people are wondering why they have a huge loyal following across generational and cultural borders all around the world is because of their music which grows along with the group members being artists and as regular people that are members of a society, thereby making a lot of people relate to it, not to mention the guys were very down to earth. Their lyrics are like thinkpieces abt societal issues, self-reflection which contains their own dilemmas and struggles, diary or anecdote, self-love and self-acceptance, motivational speech etc. They are best at turning sorrow into hope through their music which have helped and healed a lot of people. They are very honest and sincere which were evident in their music, performances, and reality shows. Not to mention, they are great great performers. Oh my…I’m sorry, 😅 I probably already have blabbered a lot. And I still have so much to say. If you are interested about each member’s writing style just search “BTS Writing Styles” by mera. The members’ writing styles is as diverse and distinct as each member’s personalities and their style is really a mirror of their personality (or at least on how I see them). On additional note, they treat hit songs as a means rather than an end. Because they are album-centered and telling a cohesive story, they lure people with their title tracks or singles that are usually upbeat with choreo that has a high chance of being a hit song, and then seal the deal with the b-sides. As Suga (a member) said, if we listen to BTS music without prejudice, we will like it. People will definitely find something they like in their 230+ songs in their discography not including solo mixtapes and soundcloud releases which varies in genre and lyrical topic. Also if you ever want BTS songs/performances recommendations, it’s my pleasure to share.

Bebe Rexha seems to hang around people in the industry who try to mess with her, as she's posted online about things people have said to her and can't seem to recognize when to get away from them early enough. This video is the direct, and accurate statement of true artists, and disposable artist, I mean for example Taylor Swift, she may not have the powerhouse vocal prowess, but her songwriting ability takes up for that, now we see with 1989, Rep, Lover, she took little pieces of trends and homogenized them into her craft, but with Folklore, and Evermore she didn’t chase the trends it was all about the music, and the emotive storytelling escapist-lyrics,

I think another part of being an artist like Taylor swift that has a strong voice but really noteable songwriting is creating a community in your fan base, like making fans feel involved and appreciated. So even if she were to drop a boring album it would still mean a lot to her dedicated fans because they know her a little better than a casual listener and can listen more to the lyrics and relate to those rather than focus on the beat or drawing appeal. I have no clue of what I just said makes sense but does anyone get what I’m trying to say?

i believe this is kind of implied in the video, but i think the artists who "succeed" are the ones who have a clear identity and personality, whether that's through their music or their presence. taylor swift, for example, has kind of followed trends while making her music - red and 1989 being a shift from country to classic pop, reputation incorporating some edm and hip hop elements, folklore and evermore catering to the cottagecore and dark academia aesthetics. the difference between her and other artists who chase hits and follow trends, is that her music is distinctly autobiographical and personal in a way that endears her to audiences. even if sonically it sounds like a lot of popular music, it stands out because it gives us an insight into who she is, and that's what we care about. doja cat, to me, is also a good example. her music doesn't necessarily sound very unique, but she's carved out a powerful image, whether it's authentic or purely curated, on social media and has made herself likeable to audiences by sharing a lot of her personality. she can get away with making somewhat generic music because people like her as a person, so they'll still bump her music - it's a way of getting closer to someone you care about and showing them support, in the same way you'd support a friend in real life. parasocial relationships are superficial and potentially unhealthy, but imo it's important to foster them, bc it's hard to support an artist when you feel like you don't know them. i think that's why artists like bebe rexha have "flopped" - she's never said or created anything that makes me interested in her as a person, and her music is generic, so why should i listen, when there are other artists that are either interesting people or making interesting music?

It was shocking and even corny sometimes but she succeeded in sending the message and making that a turning point for her career.
