Excellent video Oscar. i have the same Ivatt 46521. I bought it nearly new in the 70s. Never had trouble with the front bogie although my tender would not make 2nd radius points as the centre wheels have flanges that fouled. I have removed them and added extra lead weight, runs like a dream after all these years.

Happy New Year Donni, thank you for all the terrific comments in the past year, much appreciated. You are absolutely right about finding time to let go of all the other things that are going on around, there is simply too much at times. It's fantastic to hear that you've been enjoying seeing my railway develop. A few years ago, I would never of imagined my model railway to develop like this. It's fantastically absorbing and rewarding. All the best for the coming year. Oscar

Good morning Oscar, its Martin from Hull in the East Riding of Yorkshire. What a lovely way to end the model railway year with lovely trains on your amazing layout. I some times think I wish there was such a thing as a time machine as I would show you what railways we used to have in Hull, there would have been railway lines branching off the main line going into factories ect. I know when i left school in June 1970 and got a job on British Rail there was a lot more railway than there is now . But I am sure that was the same all over the UK. It's sad really, what with our country and it's road system not being able to cope with the volume of traffic it has to endure. Surely the only solution is a bigger railway system, but sadly our government, like many others in the past put profit before people. Sorry Oscar, am on my soap box again. Anyway, let's hope 2024 is a better year for all of us and I wish you and your family Oscar and everyone else who leaves you a comment the very best in 2024 . One last thing Oscar, I've just had my tea and toasted tea cake, and very nice it was. 🙂👍🚂🚃

They closed a lot of the branch lines in Victoria and all over Australia too. It is fascinating to see that as Melbourne grows and grows like topsy, the once truncated network gradually gets re-instated. Since COVID, a lot of people have moved to country towns and are demanding better infrastructure so I wouldn't be surprised if some of the country branches come back to life. Some of our country lines are now already at capacity. I think there has to be a brighter future for railways, they make so much sense. 😊

Good morning and happy New Year Martin, just having a cup of tea myself, thanks again for looking in taking the time to write this great comment, I think many of us fancy a time machine... They have definitely been some rather interesting decisions made about the future of all forms of transport, its development and its predicted needs over the decades. Wish you and your family, all the best for the coming year. Oscar

I remember my granddad (on my dad's side) got me the LMS brake van with the working tail light for Christmas must haave been mid 1970s'. I wish I still had it, but sadly I sold it along with some other early model trains. I think we've all done this at one time or another! I enjoy your videos, intersting to see some of the older items that I remember as a kid, some that I had myself and some that one of my friends had, brings back happer times. Best wishes for the New Year, and I look forward to more of your vides ..take care

Great to see some 1970s Hornby equipment, this is really my era. I recently retrieved my first train set from Christmas 1977 on a visit to the family in the UK - the R.684 Silver Jubilee Freight Set ("This set has it all") - sadly without the box. The Brush Type 4 loco ran straight away after 41 years in storage. The Brake Van with the illuminated tail light is on my wanted list. I see it in the 1976 Hornby catalogue but by 1977 the LMS brake van appears to have the light removed. I would be interested in seeing how the pickup works and how easy it is to change the bulb. Best wishes for 2024, greetings from Brussels.

Ben, great to hear you have your original items from 1977 amazing how these item continue to work after all the years past. I have of the R.687 Silver Jubilee Pullman Set from 77 but I only got it a few years ago, there is a link to a video of it here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hriPldWX38y2m30.html also a link to a video with the LMS Brake Van where you can see the pick ups: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z72Gi9Bhs57XhHU.htmlsi=vOadhZxV6SpKxFFT&t=817 the bulb is simple to change just undo the screw in the bottom of the van and it all comes apart. All the best for the new year. Oscar

@@oscarpaisley Thank you for the link to your Silver Jubilee Pullman set, I had not seen this video before. The images of the box prompted me to search for the box for the Silver Jubilee Freight set - it was a nice commemorative painting of Class 47 47484 "Isambard Kingdom Brunel" pulling a Kellogg's wagon! I have no recollection of this box cover, but it must have been the one I got. The freight set from 1978 was similar came with a McVitie's wagon and no station, whereas I have the Kellogg's wagon and a small station. I still have the paperwork from the set, and the stamp says R684 070477, so definitely the Siver Jubilee set. Best wishes for 2024 Ben

Hi Oscar, Hope you had a great Christmas and that the new year is going to a wonderful time for you. I am not sure but I believe they used a modified version of the front bogie from the 2mt 2-6-2 tank.(I am not 100% certain of this as I do not have access to mine at the moment). As the 2mt used plastic wheels which were a bit thicker at the back that took up some of the movement that you see. The easy fix is to make some plastic washers to fit behind the wheels. I have found using a hole punch to make the washer shape then drilling hole for the axel works well. Or just put older plastic wheels on it. Taking a close look at the front wheels as they spin it does look like the tyre is running out of true and wobbling a bit.
@oscarpaisley
@oscarpaisley 6 ай бұрын
Good morning Gerard, hope you had a great time over the festive season. Interesting what you mention about the earlier plastic wheels used on the 2-6-2, I've since tracked down my black version of the Ivatt and the wheels are of a different design, the black wheel centres have a boss at the back of the wheel giving additional thickness which reduces the movement side to side, the metal tires have a completely different profile with a much greater curvature towards the outer edge away from the flange. The bogie looks far more convincing on the straight track on the earlier black version but cuts across at a very uncomfortable, looking angle on any hint of a curve. The awkward angle is always going to be there as the pivot point on the bogie is such a short distance from axle centre. All the best for the coming year. Oscar

Hi Oscar, Last run for this year... That front truck on the Ivatt is weird? I'm amazed that it can navigate any of the points? But it actually went pretty well for today's running.. Nice use of the turntable between running the livestock wagons and then the coaches in the other direction.. The Tri-ang Princess ran beautifully as was to be expected of an earlier model.. Thank you for the little "tail light" segment shown at the end? A great little video to end the year on. Have a happy "New Year". We all look forward to our 'Sundays on Oscar's layouts', I'm sure.....
@oscarpaisley
@oscarpaisley 6 ай бұрын
Thank you Robin great to hear you enjoyed that. Front pony/truck is always going to have an odd angle to it going into the curves. There is such a short distance between its pivot point with a chassis and the axle Center.. Back to backs are what I consider to be fine for a model of this period. If you open them out, they just climb out of the rails, close them up anymore they just sink in. I've dug out the black variation of this model. All of the wheels are different, driving wheels are the corse plated type used in the early 70s but the pony wheels are of a different design to the green model. They have a larger axle boss on the back fence, the casting of the pony moving from side to side so much. The metal tires have a slightly different profile with a little more curvature to the outside edge. They nice and straight on the straight track, but still have the awkward angle in the curves. All the best to and your family for the coming year. Oscar

Morning Oscar, its nice that your videos are early in the day, I'm able to watch before Anne gets up so it's nice to wake up slowly with a relaxing video. The Ivat is a nice looking locomotive just a shame about the front bogie., is it just when the loco is on right hand way around the Railway or both directions. Nice running this morning Oscar. A very happy new year to you, looking forward to 2024. Take care Eddy xx.
@oscarpaisley
@oscarpaisley 6 ай бұрын
Hi Eddy, thanks again for looking in and all great comments over the past year it's much appreciated. It seems this locomotive only has a problem with this at this set of points, I've since dug out the black variation of this locomotive, the wheels on the front pony appear to be a slightly different design. They have an enlarged axle boss on the back which prevents too much side movement of the casting between the wheels and the metal tyres have a slightly different profile with a greater curvature, this doesn't seem to stop the unusual angle when the locomotive is negotiating a curve, but they do run straight on the straight track. There is a very short distance between the pivot point on the pony and the axle Center, which is always going to create an awkward angle negotiating a curve. All the best for the coming year. Oscar

Thank you for a lovely end of year video Oscar. I must confess that I spent most of the time whilst watching thinking about the front bogie and wondering what might be done to get it to track straight. I drew a blank on that. I suppose a close examination is required to determine the cause before attempting a cure.. It was great to see you again in 2023 on my unplanned UK visit, perhaps we'll see each other at a TCS weekend in 24. All the best to you and your family for the new year. Regards, David.

Glad you enjoyed this video to start out the year, since making the video I tracked down the black version of the Ivatt, wheels are a different design, the black wheel centres have larger axel boss at the back them giving extra thickness which reduces the movement side to side, the tires have different profile with a greater curvature towards the outer edge away from the flange. The bogie looks far more convincing on the straight track on the earlier black version of the model but continues cutting across at an odd looking angle on any hint of a curve. Possibly the awkward angle in the curves is always going to be there as the pivot point on the bogie with the chassis is such a short distance from axle centre. It would be great to catch up with you again if you're here in the UK, I'm not sure what date the TCS show maybe towards the end of the year, but there is one planned for the 16th of March which I'm hoping to be at. The problem also is the plastic nose to these triang/Hornby points. The point of the nose wears, I have cut out many a nose and had to build it up again. Peco points have more metal in the nose. There does seem to be something wrong with the back to backs on those pony truck wheels. They seem a bit wobbly. Of course as well the flanges are starting to get a bit finer as well compared to Triang wheels and track. Some added weight on the front pony truck may help. Happy new year Oscar.

Morning Oscar, lovely to see the green version of the Ivatt class 2 as opposed to the black version. The real 46521 was also in green at the time Hornby released this model, and was then based on the Severn Valley Railway. During it,s time there the loco starred in the BBC comedy series "Oh Dr Beeching", Which also starred many of the Hi-Di-Hi cast and also Stephen Lewis, best known as Blakey in "On the Buses" Starring Reg Varney. As a pure co-incidence, Sue and I are currently part way through watching the Series on DVD! A couple more suggestions for the Pony truck; some tri-ang locos had a small spring between the chassis and bogey to push it down, may be worth a try, or a small weight on the bogey itself such as a sticky Car wheel balancing weight. Happy New year to you, hopefully catch up with you soon. Regards, Rob.

Hi there Oscar,, i have had the same thing happen to 1 of these i have here and it did the same thing. I ended up pulling the axle out as mine had a slight bend in the axle the wheels had a slight buckle in them so I put a similar set of wheels and just straightened out the axle by laying it flat on a bit a steel rolling it to the high spot then whacked the bend out of it. I got the wheels in a joblot of wheels that I bought a few years ago. I also put some tiny thin spacer shims that come from the centre of a ringfield motor i had spare here. I put them on to the axles in between the trucks and the wheels to reduce the side to side movement so the wheels and front truck follows the rails better especially over points and diamond crossings i have on my test track i made. Anyhoo m8 have a great new year to you and your family. Cheers from John in Australia.

It's 10.30pm here in Wellington NZ, and your video has the edge on the New Year's Eve entertainment that's on offer... Now, can I ask you, were you a Hornby boy in the 60s, or a Triang traitor, or was Triang-Hornby the thing when you started...? My Dad chose to buy us the Hornby Goods Set No 2006 and that gave me the idea that Hornby was tops. But pretty soon we were forced to accept Triang-Hornby. Sixty years later, I am beginning to wonder if Triang wasn't so bad after all...

Hi, thanks again for looking in, fireworks celebrations here televised from London seemed a little over the top! It was Hornby Railways when I got into this in the mid-70s, My brother and I had quite a collection of Tri-ang Railways and Tri-ang Hornby item passed on to us in the mid 70s my brother lost interest quite rapidly, I remained quite enthusiastic until the early 80s when I completely lost interest until about 10 years ago. All new acquisitions were Hornby Railways as a child, lots of confusion with different track types at the time, ended up playing with system 6 and Zero 1. Playing with Hornby Dublo is fairly recent and accidental... All the best for the new year. Oscar

P.S. The Back to back on the Ivatt is probably OK..? The B to B would jump at the frog? This clearly jumped the track at the end of the blade....... I think that the crazy angle of the axle is running the edge of the wheel flange into the tip of the point blades? I don't suppose that the front pony truck could simply be adjusted to aim straight ahead, instead of turning to the right all of the time?

The left hand wheel also looks either loose or to far out on the axle . ( I'm sure you've checked all these !) Just a thought.

Might be worth a little bit of weight added on the pony truck above the axle as well to help keep wheels on the track , as truck is quite light and very loose on the attachment screw, so it moves around a lot

Looking at the box of the loco the front wheels seem to be much further forward than your model. That to me sounds like either someone has fitted a new one, which is not the correct one, or they installed it wrong. I think that the bogie is getting caught in the piston box and then catching on the points. Happy New Year Oscar!

Hi Graham, thank you for watching you may be right about the wheels, I've since dug out the black variation, The wheels on the whole model are different with the front pony wheels there is a more of an enlarged axel boss at the back of the wheel, and the profile of the metal tyers is a little different, slightly more curvature towards the outside edge. The black variation runs a lot straighter on straight track, but still has the awkward angle evident in the curves, possibly always going to be the way, very short distance from the pivot point on the pony/truck to the axle center. All the best for the new year. Oscar

I've got a 1979 Lima HO DB BR39 2-8-2 locomotive (engine drive) that just won't digest one of my left turn points when it's closed. At all speeds the front truck just tries to go left, promptly derailing. I've tried levelling the point, tightening the fishplates etc, it just won't behave. Further along the line there's an identical left turn point that doesn't cause any problems.

Happy new year! Could you do a 3f tender loco/jinty double header with a long freight if possible?

Re the pony truck on the Ivatt class 2 R852 is there a way of making it run true? I have some .modern (mid 2000s') locos were the front pony truck also run over to one side of the track, very anoying as it looks odd, and sometimes can derail on points. So even with all the modern design tools at their fingertips they still can't solve all the issues.

Hi Mike, I seem to remember that maybe this also affects the early 80s, 2-6-4 tank locomotives as well, where they've tried to address the situation by putting a double pivot point on the front pony/truck. There is a very short distance between the pony pivot point on this model and the axle of those front wheels possibly always going to cause an awkward looking angle when looked at too closely. All the best for the coming year. Oscar
