There’s a lot of weird laws around minors and at what age people can make their own decisions and such when it comes to the healthcare system. Where I live anyway, not sure about America. Also doctors technically don’t have to tell you the truth if they think keeping it from you is in your best interest. There’s a name for it but I can’t quite put my finger on it haha

@@satrok7490 Not at 16 they don't, most states 16 you can call your own shots medically speaking barring certain circumstances. In my state they will separate parents from children around age 10 during the whole weighing, height and vital sign check, to confirm the child is okay, not abused, or being coerced into procedures. Parents can't even see a kids medical records without a lot of legal documentation or good reason, like nurses will call security on you if you refuse to stop.

Instead of beating her over the head to stay in her ‘safe zone’ or else, you could drill into her, yes you can go out but take X and Y precautions. That way when she doesn’t feel the need to sneak out as much and when she does, she’s prepared. Also make sure she 100% knows her allergies instead of the “it’s ok hun don’t worry I’ll do this for you” mentality. Have you learnt nothing from stories like rapunzel? Based on "find out what I'm allergic to" and the moms general "I'll look after you, I know best" vibe, it's quite possible she didn't know the whole list of her allergies. If you are born with certain genes, your immune system may react to substances in the environment that are normally harmless. These substances are called allergens. Having an allergic reaction is the most common example of an overactive immune system. Dust, mold, pollen, and foods are examples of allergens, some people can be allergic to certain medications

The problematic part with being so protective is that once your kid is an adult, they are more than likely going to go against everything you tried to "protect" them from. And if worse comes to worse, your child won't even introduce you to any spouse or child they have because they don't want their kids to feel like "prisoners" (as the girl here so graciously described). Protection from the outside world also emits risks for them as they won't recognize potential dangers most kids may have been taught to recognize and respond to. I understand some people are like that but above all if you are one of these parents, please teach your kids the dangers (or at least talk to them about it) even if you are protecting them to a tee. The world is cruel, if you aren't savvy of it, you can hurt a lot more than help.

Hey! I’m going to chime in on this situation/episode because I have a very similar experience, and I’ve seen so many comments of people arguing over who was right or wrong. So here we go. I was born with a collagen disorder. So basically my bones, organs, muscles, tendons, etc are effected by it because they are all made up of mostly collagen. It’s called Osteogenesis Imperfecta. If you watched Grey’s Anatomy ( I know house fans usually watch Greys and via-verse) you might remember April and Jackson’s first son having my disorder! There are different types of my disorder. Each one with its own severity and unique characteristics. Type 1 is mild, you usually don’t break bones as often as other types and usually don’t use a mobility aide. Type 2 Severe and usually don’t survive wether it’s in or out of the womb, however we have had more type 2’s survive in these recent years thanks to new studies! Type 3’s which is what I have is a bit tricky. Because within the diagnosis of Type Three there are different severities as well. Some type threes can walk usually with a mobility aide others are completely wheelchair bound and may be on a trach or vent to help with breathing. I’m a mild type three. I use an electric and manual (one that you push yourself) wheelchair as well as a walker. Type 4’s are more severe then type 1, but still totally mild. These are the main types. One thing all OI patients have in common is blue sclera. So basically the whites of our eyes can range from a normal white to, light grey, dark grey, purple, and blue. Since the eyes are made of collagen as well! Anyways because of my condition I am immuno- compromised. Meaning I get more often then a normal person does. During this pandemic I’ve had to be extra super careful because if I caught covid I more then likely would end up in the ICU. I haven’t been vaccinated for Covid yet due to the word of expert doctors who specialize in my condition around the world. Now I’ve always lived an independent life. I use a wheelchair that’s it. But I do everything myself. Basic daily tasks, going to my college campus, hanging out with friends, travel. I do it all. I think it’s because my mother knew when she was pregnant with me they had genetic testing done with me in the womb. My dad has the same condition. My mother does not. So they took a sample from myself and my father and found it to be a perfect match. In fact so perfect they had to run it again because they thought it was a mistake. So my parents were prepared. My parents have always pushed me to be independent and do what I want. Even if it means finding a different way to do it. I live a normal life like any college student my age? Except for those times when I have to go in for treatments or surgeries. But otherwise just like anyone else. Yet other parents of children with my condition are totally insane and are around their kids 24/7. Even when they go to hang out with friends, even at school! It’s insane to me! My whole point is you literally can’t be a helicopter parent to a child wether they have a disability or condition or not. It will not help them in the long run and will not prepare them for life.

Although I know the mom is being really protective, I understand why. It must be so difficult to see your child go through all of those terrible things. A child you put a lot of work into bearing and raising...on the brink of death so many times. I believe she deserves sympathy before the scorn...yes, she could do well to educate her daughter's boyfriend so that they can be safe and understand that just cracking down on her daughter's freedom won't always have desirable results, but she's not horrible and she does genuinely care about her daughter's life. The boyfriend, for all of his caring for her, should also try to educate himself and be more careful.
