Quedar is one of Spanish's most versatile words! In this video, we'll be diving in to 10 of the meanings it can have, with some explanations and example sentences.
It will take a while to feel comfortable writing your own sentences with quedar, but, hopefully, by the end of this video, you'll be able to understand quedar when it's being used.
I've also made a second version of this video, where I explain to Spanish speakers how to say quedar in English. If you feel up for a challenge, follow along as I explain these same concepts while speaking Spanish primarily: • 10 traducciones del ve...

Well, I'm Brazilian and in portuguese we have the word "ficar" that is the equivalent of "quedar" in Spanish. I would say they're 98% used in the same way. @@kiryekatie Hey, Katie. My personal opinion is that she speaks basically the same in Spanish as in English. If you're a native English speaker, then you can probably realize that in English she is speaking at a pretty "normal" pace. Her Spanish is quite comparative. Yep! Definitely needed this video. I am able to follow your Spanish videos 90% of the time, but sometimes it's just helpful to hear the explanations in reverse (or is it the right way around in my case?) from the English perspective. My mind often mutes the word "quedar" when I'm listening to Spanish conversations, because the translation doesn't track. I've just learned two uses of the word that I didn't know before, so hopefully my brain will "refresh" and take these usages into account moving forward. Thank you!

Otra frase que aprendí por trabajar en unas obras con un mexicano que desde entonces se me hace MUY útil es: "Quedó bien." (cuando trata de una obra o algo que estés instalando/reparando) Siempre me preguntaba eso cuando acababa de instalar o reparar algo. Ni siquiera sé cómo traducirlo en ingés pero será algo como: Did it turn out good? / Did it fit well? ¿Quedó bien el lavabo? Si, quedó muy bien! Aunque parezca difícil al principio que un verbo tiene tantos signidicados, al aprender cada uso poco a poco te da mucha libertad hablar y expresarte mejor en más situaciones. Me encanta!

Me ha gustado mucho el vídeo, nunca había pensado en esos significados porque al escribir en inglés no intento pensar en la frase en español, simplemente la escribo como suena bien en inglés. Respecto a la traducción de "quedar o estar cerca de" creo que depende de como se habla en la zona, yo soy de Madrid y me suena mejor "estar cerca de", pero no me suena raro "quedar".

Holly, muchas gracias por todos sus videos en los dos idiomas. Es hasta estratégico ver algún tema en uno... and then switch to the next video in the other language, even if someone is a native of one language, it is very interesting to hear how a topic is taught to understand another style of thinking. De nuevo muchas gracias!!! I recommend that we all subscribe to your two channels .

I've been staying at home for several weeks now due to the ongoing situation, so I had agreed with myself that I'd be on the lookout for the next video #MissHolly would make and that I'd be one of the first ones to watch it... In the end, when I realized it, it had been a whole hour since she uploaded it and I had no choice but to acknowledge my defeat... Once more I was really impressed by the amount of video editing work she put in this class... She did a very good job on the video... I have nothing left but to congratulate her through a comment, which will remain here consigned to posterity; I will try to be witty by using today's topic... We'll see how well I do on it... I also watched the companion video in her Spanish channel, since she put the link in the description, so it was only a click away... (Though I wonder if this comment would fit better in that other video... Mmmh... I hope I don't end up looking like a fool...) That's all for now, from your KZfaq viewer friend, Al Juarizmi...

Hola. My husband and I just saw some of your videos. Pretty awesome. We are both bilingual. Spanish and English. I was wondering why my Spanish sounds Cuban when it comes out. I never grew up with people with this accent and never noticed it till we got older. My brother actually pointed it out. It's funny. My great grandmother was Cuban but we never met her nor the rest of that side of the family. How funny that I developed that accent but no one else has it.

Querida Holly, como siempre tus videos son ve geniales!! Otro significado más de la palabta QUEDAR, es silencioso, en una forma poética: El caballero se lamentó con voz queda. Un ejemplo más coloquial es "¡Habla más quedito, no te vayan escuchen!" ¡Saludos desde México!

I got amazed about the fact that words in a language could be interpreted in many different ways in another languages, you're great. It'd be interesting if you talked about english dialects, for example, here in San Andres Island is spoken a combination of languages called creole english, and it's quite similar to Jamaican Patois, and is very common among english speaking caribbean islands, by the way, i am descendant of continental colombia people, but i learnt creole and english, so i feel identified with you, i feel islander and colombian at the same time, you're doing great, keep on like that!

I just watched the video about euphemisms and dysphemisms and rlly enjoyed it. They make languages a lot more boring in school, which is sad! Have you done or would you consider doing a video on mental health related terms? I’m a crisis counselor currently and my goal is to be able to do therapy bilingually in the future. Understanding slang and more “polite” terms for these things would be really helpful to me, and since there’s a stigma against mental health in most cultures I’m sure there’s many such terms. I already found the ways of saying death-related words helpful. Words for suicide, homicide, psychosis, “crazy” etc, and really anything related to mental health that someone might say in a therapy session would be super cool and I’m sure helpful to others too. If I’m being too vague I’d be happy to supply more specific examples. Thanks for making these!
