Every motorcyclist should watch basic tutorials like this to understand the simple goings on underneath you. Well explained Adam.

Thank you...confirms my research....simple and easy to understand...thank you. After getting Ohlins upgrade my riding camera is more stable and the bike is way more stable and planted on the road...all becasue of the simple facts you havce stated...it's so easy to nderstand when it is explained clearly and simply, thank you sir.

Good stuff. The previous owner of my cb500x changed the linkage to lower the seat height, it's a bit more like a cruiser position now I guess, never experienced the stock one.

I don't understand how does the chain remains tight during arm swinging up and down, unless the center of arm rotation is the same as center of the chainring that drives the chain, which in most if not all motorcycles, it isn't. This information seems impossible to obtain on the internet??? I've seen center of arm rotation put just behind the chainring, but wouldn't that mean when the arm goes up, the upper part of the chain would loosen up a bit, reducing the load on the engine, and when going down the load would suddenly increase, how can this sudden change be good for the engine? I want to build a DIY motorcycle or rather a motorized bike but I want it to have rear suspension and I can't wrap my head around how should I do it so that the operation of the bike is safe during intense suspension arm swinging.

The pivot point of the swingarm is always the same distance from the sprocket whether the swingarm is up or down, so therefore the chain shouldn't get slack or taught with the swingarm/wheel movement.

What would happen if you flipped the rear suspension upside down? I tried to do that on my electric bike which only has adjustable springs and not dampening or rebound. But in doing so it seems to rebound much faster when going over bumps. Any help would be appreciated

Contact a suspension shop. Some shocks behave dramatically different when turned upside down.

so tell me in general the swing arm pivot point is fixed or does it move when tire and rear shock is moving?? i am replacing a single rear shock with a new one thats shorter in length so trying to figure out what part of the bike has to move to mak my install possible? thanks

The swingarm pivot point can't move, but the bottom of the shock will, likely through a linkage. However it works, if you put a shorter shock in, the wheel will sit higher / the tail of the bike will sit lower. The wheel might even hit the bottom of the tail under compression. Why are you putting a shorter shock in? Cheers, John

@@bennettsbikesocial its my first week of riding a bike and i feel more in control if the bike is lower even got lower tires . i did not realize the wheel will sit higher! i just went and checked the top of the rear wheel has 12" of free space (bmw310gs) thanks

"motorbikes have springs" - sigh, I'm still looking for anyone to describe how linkages are progressive
@prettycoolguy2850
@prettycoolguy2850 2 жыл бұрын
Rear shock absorbers on motorcycles are angled in a way so that they have, on average, a 3 to 1 leverage ratio. This means for every 3 inches the wheel travels upward, the shock will compress an inch. The exact angle and leverage ratio is completely different on every bike, as it takes into account a variety of different specs. To answer your question, there is no such thing as a progressive linkage. There are progressive springs, which nowadays are only used for forks. If you have a really old bike you might have twin rear shocks with progressive springs. Progressive springs are springs that are coiled tighter or closer together on one side, usually the bottom. The result is a lighter spring rate when it's decompressed than when it's compressed.

Sorry. Didn't get what I needed from this. With a title like this, I was expecting an introduction to... geometry in suspension. Not types of suspension. This video is not titled well IMO.
