I personally assume the canonical distance is much bigger, and that this, while most likely accurate, is not canonically representative of the entire journey, as the amount of distance traveled feels, and is likely designed to feel much bigger than it in reality is. Also there's the fact that op4's canonicity is questionable, which makes it, in my likely uneducated opinion not reliable, but still fun to see. Regardlessly, nice videos man. Actually really interesting to see

@@gummy2955 Well, to me it is cannon, but the canonicity is questionable due to Race X never being mentioned or appearing again, or the Male Black Ops. I believe it'd mostly be up to head cannon, but I would say that in my head cannon, the distance is much bigger, but Op4 is also cannon. It'd involve some weird thinking, but it could be attributed to the maps being linked by a different developer than Valve, as Blue Shift and Op4 were made by Gearbox.

Black Mesa has its own dedicated transit system, power plant, an abandoned underground rail system, a recycling facility, a toxic waste dump ect ect. There is no way it's canonically only 91 meters from one end to the other. but there is no way they could stretch the gameplay to fit the intended distance, like imagine actually having to walk through 10km in game (it sounds pretty cool tho) Half Life maps have wide open areas with buildings and mountains in the distance, there are seemingly bottomless pits all around the facility, maps take place in different times of day, just to give the illusion of a massive facility that we only explore a tiny bit of, it's some brilliant level design

Using Opposing Force to bridge the gap is really clever. I've always wanted to see a full map of every game taking place in Black Mesa combined, and to see if it's even possible or if areas overlap. Though of course with Decay being mission-based, we get almost no information from it in terms of where areas are located relative to other areas. Also makes me wonder if the Pit Worm's nest is actually beneath the area with the tactical map in HL1, as they're both marked with the same label, Waste Processing Area 3.
@pierrecolin6376
@pierrecolin6376 3 жыл бұрын
Areas do overlap. This is exploited in speedruns in fact. If you break the crates in the room right before Power Up but don’t take the healthkits, you’ll see them in the tunnel at the end of the chapter. The chapter with the most overlap is Surface Tension. Its first area overlaps with the arena where you fight the osprey. A long time ago someone made a 3D map of Black Mesa, though they didn’t separate before and after Gordon gets captured, but it still gives a decent view of the whole thing.

Measuring distance with an amount of objects is easier to visually understand. If I have a perfect reference for a washing machine, I have a perfect reference for 20 washing machines. Measuring in football fields is surprisingly common due to the overwhelming popularity of (American) football here, so more people have reference for it. Concepts such as a meter, or even a yard, are hard to visualize without something literal like a ruler.

I can believe that distance, a tram could get there in minutes but on foot like Gordon had to do it would make sense why the facility relied on the tram since it's far from a straight line from point C to point F (get it? the Lambda Labs is sector F) but I would also believe if in the cannon it was much further, it's still is undecided by Valve if the Gearbox expansions are cannon or not.

I see that some levels lie ontop of eachother in the the X-Y plane of the overworld map. Is there any inconsistencies here? We must consider that two maps may be on the same location in the overworld, but may lie on different Z levels. It would require more analysis to verify that these levels don't occupy the same space. If there is two outdoor locations that are different, we know there must be an inconsistency.

@@polishworm9444 Truly fascinating! Objects in Black Mesa seem to be able to occupy the same space. This sounds like impossible nonsense, unless we consider a fourth, hidden dimension which, when traveled across, can gives Gordon access to these different "layers". Therefore, Gordon is no longer traveling only in three dimensions, but he is also traveling inter-dimensionally. This may also explain the scientist's claim that the Lambda complex is on the other side of the facility. We all assumed he meant in three dimensions, which may only be a football field's distance away, but he was, in fact, referring to the fourth dimension, a distance which may be vast. This video therefore becomes incomplete. It answers how much distance is traveled in 3D space, but what is the distance traveled in the fourth dimension? Your thoughts, please.

Explanation from a kinda new goldsrc mapper: Maps have a set size, where past that the grid stops. It's possible to build outside the grind but I haven't tried it because it'd probably have some strange results. You can't change the size of the map, as far as I know. The player's position is carried over between every map, too. As far as I know there's no way to translate the player's position to a different part of the map on map load. This means in maps without teleports, they have to continue to go around the same area. But yeah most of this I got from twhl, I haven't messed with map transitions yet...

Are there any locations in Blue Shift or Decay we could use to build an even more comprehensive map? The only place I know Blue Shift overlaps with Gordon's story is the beginning with the tram but if there are more places and and it could somehow fit in that would be sick

Honestly I'm not too bothered by the seemingly short distance. There's only one main route between the sectors - everything else is detours, or using abandoned sectors (such as The Blast Pit entrance that is seen in-game), plus there's the matter that Gordon gets captured. If Gordon had a tram like Shephard did, he may have solved the problem astonishingly quickly.

the actual map is expanded in Black Mesa, some parts are maybe 10 times bigger than 98 version. Considering this make it even bigger.

In games there always has to be a separation between gameplay and cannon. Another example would be Halo 1's warthog run. In reality the ship itself dwarfs the journey that is supposed to be inside. Not to mention the part where 2 sides of the ship are seemingly only connected via a small bridge. In cannon the ship is MASSIVE and it wouldn't make sense to make the ship actual size since it would be too big for the engine and the player never actually sees the ship enough to make a realistic size comparison. Its fair to say that in cases like these, and in your other videos that show that in some areas of black mesa outside appears to be underneath some of the underground sections, there absolutely NEEDs to be a disconnect between the game/engine and the overall story.

Question is, does that "smallest unit = 1 imch" thing really hold true? Does that number if feet/metres seem a sensible size for the teleport chamber? It might be better to compare it to the size of the NPCs (security guard/scientist, or indeed Gordon jumping into the portal in opfor). If we assume an NPC is supposed to be about 6 foot tall (or 5 foot 10 or something) that might be a better measuring stick. Because despite wjat the valve developer wiki might say, I suspect that really the smallest unit of measurement is more equivalent to a couple of inches.
@lymphoid
@lymphoid 3 жыл бұрын
This is truly a great question. Apparently there is a world to player ratio that is odd. I read on TWHL that if the grid measurements taken were into account as true, Gordon would be a short, fat guy, because of the player hull size. This is why doors in half-life are always wide, as opposed to the doors in your house which are tall and thin.

Technically, half life could have been faster, since during the resonance cascade Gordon teleports to xen twice, because of this had the scientist during the resonance cascade yell “Gordon, when you teleport to xen you’ll have 10 seconds to hunt down and kill the nihilanth” but nooooo he had to tell him to get away from the beams
@audiovisualcringe

You based your calculation on 1 Hammer unit being 1 inch. However, checking this info with the fact that both Gordon and Adrian run at the speed of 320 Hammer units/second, I found the result unrealistic. I think considering 1 Hammer unit as 0.75 inch, as suggested by the article by Valve, gives a much more plausible result.
@alfo2804
@alfo2804 3 жыл бұрын
320 inches per second is a sprint speed of about 29km/hour - the average sprinting speed of a human is about 24km/hour. Considering the fact that Gordon wears a suit that undoubtedly augments his physical abilities, and Adrian is a highly trained soldier in peak physical condition, it's not too unrealistic to imagine their top running speeds being above average.

I tried to credit the author of this image when making this video, but I didn't have any luck finding your name. If that's you, then I actually recall discussing the map with you over email more than a decade ago. You said you used BSPSlice(?). [Edit, I just Googled your name, and I saw the map was dated at 2006, so that would make sense]. Anyway it doesn't match up with the results I got, which I would be happy to share my findings with you. Good work, nonetheless!

Interesting that the Lambda Reactor turned out to truly be in the opposite location to Sector C. Was that Gearbox's intent or a happy accident? Of-course, I have to image the "true" distance is quite a bit larger. I don't think we really see the Black Mesa Research Facility to scale. We can't, considering how many areas have nonsense access or geometry, and after we leave Sector C the are NO BATHROOMS!
