How good is AMD's Ryzen 9 5950X for content creators? | Upscaled

With their new Zen 3 chips, AMD has fully captured the performance crown back from Intel. The flagship 16-core 5950X is the fastest chip we've tested both in single and multi-core benchmarks, and does it all using less power than Intel's competing chips. What did AMD change in Zen 3 to enable this level of performance, and how much does this level of CPU power actually matter these days?

Ryzen 9 5950X is a beast for something that no one mentions: Music Production. So, if you are a hardcore music producer, the 5950X is the perfect product for now. The difference is way more massive than video editing (which isn't the only production application). Music production is *100% CPU bound* with RAM and storage, the processor does *calculations in real time* and delivers sound to the DAC in a time interval unlike Cinebench and all of that other stuff (that isn't a real time production application, here a CPU gets absolutely destroyed by GPUs or graphics cards). The Ryzen 9 5950X is a *16 core processor* (the cores scale very well in audio for instruments and audio effects loaded in parallel) with a max clockspeed of basically *5GHz* (audio loves clockspeed too due to the singlethread perfomance). Imagine the amount of extremely CPU intensive synthesizers and effects that you can load with very low latency playback and for recording. The Ryzen 9 5950X is so good with the singlethread perfomance that it can run a *PS3 and Nintendo Switch emulator better than a high end 10th gen Intel processor in 1080p* . The 5950X has less stutters than a 10900K. *Zen 3 is the best micro architecture ever made by AMD for music production* , that is something that AMD themselves said in their zen 3 presentation.

I think saying that a 5950x is a powerful cpu is a bit like saying an oil tanker is a powerful boat. It really depends what you are doing with it.

I was going for the 5900X, thinking that I may save a bit of money and lose only a small amount of performance. Today I got an interesting call though: I do a lot of data analysis as my work and some customer of mine got a data set that they were just unable to process because it was too large for the machines (and tools) that they use. It makes sense for me to build up my home computer as well as possible it seems as it creates me opportunities to work from home (especially important now with Covid, but I do not particularly enjoy travelling on normal days either). So the solution, I switched the 5900X from my shopping cart to 5950X and I am now thinking of adding some more memory also to the machine. This one extra job already paid for the CPU by more than 10x. On data analysis it is almost always CPU dependent (only some machine learning applications work with GPUs) and it is a mix of single and multicore performance.
@charleshines8523
@charleshines8523 Жыл бұрын
What was preventing processing the data? Was it just not enough RAM or would it take way too long still?
@innocentiuslacrim2290
@innocentiuslacrim2290 Жыл бұрын
@@charleshines8523 ah that old case. Mostly RAM is the factor that makes things pass or fail, but CPU power makes it enjoyable or not. I am still using that 5950X with 64GB RAM. Additionally for me CPU speed also makes the analysis steps shorter so it is easier to keep thought process clear (less content switching).

Putting together a PC atm for After Effects, Prem Pro and C4D. It's between the 5900x and 5950x and tbh it'll likely be decided by who's got what in stock. Think a 5900x and 3080 feels like pretty much the sweet spot for price and performance. And same here, 128GB RAM (shinier the better 😄).

16 cores still killing it for audio production. Recording, mixing, mastering with Izotope and multiple instances of Analog Labs and multiple other virtual instrument VST3 programs running parallel and simultaneously within each project, along with direct feed off Roland TD27 and Fractal Axe FX III via RME Fireface UFX+. 32GB 3200 and supremely fast write times on 870 PRO SSD. I don't see a need to update to the current Gen. It's amazing. It just consumes all of it. There's just no stopping it. No blips. Crackles. Hiccups. Nothing. Just 24/48 goodness on what seems to be unlimited tracks at this point.

For me the number of fast cores is primary. Running Clarisse ifx (3D content creation) I get a nearly linear increase in performance as core count goes up. The GPU (at present) is significantly less critical. This is changing as GPUs become more general compute tools, but for now I dream of a top of the line threadripper.

Fun little tidbit i literally use my 3950x, to transcode live TV to x265, while i'm playing a game like Forza horizon 4, and when i'm not playing a game, i have it work on 3 videos at once instead of just 1. Other than a slight clock speed drop, there is very little difference in performance when playing a game while transcoding as long as only one transcode is running(each transcode generally uses less than 40% of the processor)

what i hate about this type of benchmarks that it only focus on render time, while working on the actual project is more important to me, like being able to preview, move and change smoothly would be more important to me, like i had to edit footage of 8 cameras each camera has almost 2 hours of footage and i had more than 22 sequences one of them has all the footage edited. working on my computer was a bit of a hassle and now editing more videos out of it, is the real problem slow, choppy, freezing and unstable sometimes is the real deal.

My line of research involves dealing with huge symbolic matrices (a very core number dependent task) which take my old 96 core university's supercomputer weeks to compute. These high core numbers are paramount for academic research (GPUs, not so much). I just wish I could have my own 3990x threadripper rig, but the processor alone costs 70% my yearly income.

I needed more than 4 cores for 4k editing, so last year I put together a really nice 9300x with Be Quiet cooler on a 570 board with HDME M.2 drives, SSD's and a good card and PSU in a big BeQuiet case! Super good unit... strongest computer I ever used.... But recently I'm doing 3D rendering because the machine is more than capable of it..... but it takes forever, and the particular software I'm using is totally CPU. I'm now working stereo 3D and it takes forever to process the data intensive frames. The piece I'm working now has been processing for 30 hours and has 202 frames of 2300 done. I seriously need to increase my processing so I can put out more work. The thing is, now that I have a capable machine, I start increasing the quality settings, and doing fancy-schmancy stuff like 3D stereo, and now I just need a 64 core Threadripper to help out. But in the meantime this would be a much cheaper thing to buy and put on my system. (I don't think I'll be getting a Threadripper this year). But the job I'm doing now might have gotten to 202 frames in 20 hours instead of 30. Thank you for looking at it from the creator's perspective!

Nvidia comes out with the 2070 super @ $499.....a year later with the paper launch of the RTX3000 series, you can't find an RTX2070 super for less than about $700 (Nov 29, 2020). Heck, the 2060 super which the "60" has always been around a mid-range graphics card is priced at $550+ today! Those prices are just ridiculous. Not to mention..... The three biggest paper launches of 2020 are the AMD 5000 series CPU, AMD 6000 series graphics cards and the Nvidia RTX3000 series graphics cards. 1-2 months after launch, no one has them or they come to retailers in drips and drabs. And unlike the gaming market with there is a major upside to moving from the Ryzen 3000 to the Ryzen 5000 series, for content creation the difference on average between the two series is only between 5%-10%. Not sure that is worth the large upcharge for the 5000 series processor - although the difference between the 3950 and 5950 is only $50 at this point. But a 3800X to 5800X is about $125, or about a quarter of the processors total price....that is a major upcharge for not a huge amount of performance gain in the content creation space. BTW, you should have include the 3950 in your comparison. You made this an intel vs AMD comparison when it should have also been about AMD previous vs new generation CPU.

I was concerned about running with a 10yo mobo so recently I bought the Ryzen 9 3950 and the RTX3080. Also since 2000 I was frustrated by the way hard drives were the slowest components and put up with a lot of thrashing. Now the SSDs are a godsend. Do I need all this? Probably not but I don’t want to get frustrated again by some limitation or bottleneck and glad I don’t have to run my reasoning past a boss or spouse.

Hello! I video edit and animate with Adobe. Any idea if the RTX 3070 combined with Ryzen 5950X 16 core would be an overkill for working with both programs in 4K?

@@itsyoboig3325 I ended up going with the Ryzen 12 core and it works great. I still have lag in my programs sometimes but not sure if it’s from not having a stronger setup or if it’s the programs themselves

Did you compare the 10900K QuickSync transcode? I don't know for sure but I reckon it would be faster than the 5950X
@charleshines8523
@charleshines8523 Жыл бұрын
You can never have too much speed. I would get an Ampere Altra if the price was low, I just don't have $6000 sitting around to spend on that kind of thing. Or maybe an IBM Power 9 or better, the only other drawback besides price with those is that I don't think they natively run Windows. They would be fun to try Linux on though!

Not trying to be 'that guy', but the biggest boost in my productivity pipeline is a large pile of CUDA cores. I don't use the processor for much more than a means to keep those cores well fed... Photogrammetry, rendering, image stabilization, panorama stitching are all GPU functions in this shop. Some of these tasks take 8-40 times longer on CPU! Thousands of cores on a task, in my mind, is comparable to thousands of threads...

Think the 10980xe on the Intel side or 3950x would've been a better choice for comparison cost and core-count wise

what about audio production, how does it scale there? and how is it in comparison to the 5900x?
@saricubra2867
@saricubra2867 3 жыл бұрын
From personal experience, audio or music production likes more singlethread perfomance (due to the audio buffer) than core count for the most part, the 5950X will beat the 5900X because it has faster singlethread and the core count helps for more instruments. Your bottleneck will be in the amount of effects per channel and that heavily depends on clockspeed. Personally speaking, Intel is the better choice for 8 cores and below for now in audio (also, their higher clock speeds help), for AMD, the 5950X wins but it's extremely overkill. (Even the modern Intel processors can be overkill lol).

@@saricubra2867 thats good too know. Thank you. You might wanna tell me why Intel prevails vs AMD in Audio Production?
@saricubra2867
@saricubra2867 3 жыл бұрын
@@caynofficial Reliability and compability, CPU design (Intel processors are designed for real time processing) just like how they usually perform better in gaming, audio doesn't like core count too much, it's real time serial process. 5950X has basically the same singlethread perfomance as the 5900X but with more cores, Rocket Lake will perform even better. I recommend waiting a little more for Rocket Lake launch, buy the fastest gaming CPU in your budget, if you do video rendering or things like that, a Ryzen 9 makes sense because the cores will be used more, if you only do audio stuff, those cores will be wasted. Still, going even further, wait for Alder Lake, *new platform, new nanometers process, more efficiency and perfomance* . Finally, if you don't care about gaming, Intel processors have integrated graphics, so you don't need a graphics card, then if you want to game, you can save more money and buy a GPU for gaming in the future.

Ive game up on getting a 3080/80ti/90 or 6800xt/6900xt for my 5950x build i just used a strix 2080ti. I sold a strix 2080 and still have a radeon vii, reference 5700xt and nitro 5700xt se as my newer gpu’s. I was debating on selling the nitro 5700xt mainly because the radeon vii will be hard to find in a couple years and i have the reference xt in an itx build it was the smallest fastest gpu that would fit. But i think i might try to see if the vii fits in and take out the 3600 and put in a 3900x. But my two main gaming systems are 9900ks nitro 5700xt, 5950x strix 2080ti. I’ve been in every newegg shuffle and check daily looking for high tier gpu’s for sale. Im not paying scalpers double or triple the price that’s stupid and if people would stop buying them it might stop but I highly doubt it.😡🤬🤯☠️ The vii on the used market has went way up I was very tempted to sell it but I like collecting gpu’s and the vii was a unique card. Yea it got a lot of hell when it came out but it’s fun if you to tinker. With a nice undervolt the cards not bad at all and on water its a beast. And I really enjoy the silver all metal design and 16gb’s of hbm2. But for purely gaming the 5700xt was a much smarter choice. I really just want to move to 4k a bought the smallest lg cx oled to game on I normally game on a 3440x1440 120hz gsync or a 144hz 1440p freesync display. I want to try 4k and needs a hdmi 2.1 compatible gpu.

Hay dude, you show a very simplyfied case run. Just pin Cinebench for 30 mins and look at the average score you ll see a drop off in Intelperformance due to "throtteling " (not reaching full boost clocks anymore because the thermals are killing it while 5950X will beable to still boost. So anyone who has to compile or render scenes for plus 10 mins will be FAR better off with 5950x except for 512 instructionset render
