In this video I talk through a simple off camera flash set up for a bride and groom portrait on a wedding day. By exposing for the brightest part of the scene, which in this case was a lamp, I was able to create a dramatic wedding portrait using a single speed light flash and MagMod modifiers.

Brilliant!! Another stonkingly great shot, walked through in simple, straight forward steps, love these videos. Have you ever thought of going Godox for speedlights, AD200 etc? I know you like the stratos triggers to kill the light quickly, but you can set a button on your D810 to kill all flash. Also, you would only need the trigger as the receivers are all built into their flashes. Anyway its just a thought to speed up your workflow even more.
@NeilRedfern
@NeilRedfern 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much Daniel! Yes, I actually bought two Godox speedlights recently as at some point I will move to them, I love that you don't need receivers. But the reason I love the stratos is because, if I'm using more than one speedlight at the same time, I can turn them on and off with a single button, which I haven't found I can do with any other triggers. But I think I'll be fully Godox in the next few months when I get a second Sony body.

...nobody teaches this and it's soooo frustrating to me. I know my way around a camera pretty well, but some of these more technical types of tricks and effects are things I still have yet to conquer and really figure out. THANK YOU soooo much for doing this for us!! I would sure give the world for you to also do a couple of videos teaching us how to photograph sparkler exits, light trails with wedding reception dance photos, how to photograph those cigar smoke photos of the guys on wedding day, and how to get that hair spray shot when the bride is getting ready. I'd also love to learn how to do some of those trick photos that so many of you do on wedding days - the reflection, shooting through things, bokeh lights, ring shots with an extra fun flair, etc. A super fun photographer that does a lot of this stuff is Jason Martin with Concept Photography. This guy has some super cool photography tricks and effects and I still have yet to figure out how he does a lot of them.

@NeilRedfern
@NeilRedfern 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I tend to have them zoomed in to about 85mm although if you are using a grid it doesn't matter as the grid is condensing the light anyway. I just lifted the shadows on the couple so that they weren't quite as contrasty :)

Hi. Nice video. I was wondering, why did you choose to place the flash on the opposite room? It seems to me that in doing so, together with the way the couple is interacting, caused the groom´s face to be in the shadows. Happy weekend.
@NeilRedfern
@NeilRedfern 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Edwin, thank you and good question. The flash was on that side so that the bride was looking in to the majority of the frame, which personally I prefer compositionally. A bride and groom portrait for me is all about the bride being in the best light, rather than the groom. Thank you for your comment :-)

Can’t see the couple? My issue with many wedding photographers. I mean the bride could be getting smooched by a complete stranger you can’t make him out! It seems to me these days it’s more about the photographer and less about getting photos of the couple that show the couple and don’t need 2 hours away from guests to get 5 shots!! Ridiculous! Seen it first hand and it’s unnecessary! Not a gripe at you? I guess this was not a real wedding!
@NeilRedfern
@NeilRedfern 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Glenn, thank you for the comment, we all have our opinions, but I have to disagree with yours. Firstly, you "can't see the couple"? They are right there. And if you watch my videos you will know that I take portraits of my couples for no more than 30 minutes across a 12+ hour day. And please elaborate on how I make the wedding days about me and not the couple? No offence but you come across as extremely angry and bitter.
