Let's be real. Staying sober is hard. So, I created a roadmap for myself to help keep me sober after rehab-and so far it's worked for me. This video breaks down the 5 things that I do to stay sober.
/ @annabarram
About me
Hey, I'm Anna. I live in Portland, Oregon, work in branding/marketing, have a cool dog named Karl, and got sober in October of 2023 after almost getting taken out by my drug addiction. I was in rehab for 2 months when I got clean and have been sober ever since. Thank you so much for checking out my channel. Follow along if you want for updates on my life after getting sober.

I wanted to get sober but I never want to go back to a treatment center ever again. I think that and trying to get my driver license back is my major "roadmap." That and stay sober and stay alive. The suggestion for temporary sponsors is good advice for people that are worried about that they have to find the perfect fit right away.

I know, I don't want to go back to treatment again either. I think people get sober when they're ready to, and that's so different for every single person. Thanks for watching and commenting, I really appreciate it :)

I'll say this after having a lot of experience of rehab and half assing it. A lot of people (like me) have to refund the pain multiple times before it's finally enough and YOU have had enough. I like the term Mentor instead of sponsor. I was lucky enough to find an amazing guy who I aspire to emulate. Find something that works for you and remember how much it hurts to go back again...and again...and again. 8 months sober now 🙂

It's so hard to know if I've TRULY had enough. I kinda feel like I just tell myself I've had enough to force myself into believing it so I stay sober. Know what I mean? And yeah, I like the word mentor better too. It feels less cult-like to me for some reason. That's so awesome you've found a good mentor, makes me really happy to hear that. I hope that encourages other people to not give up on finding a good mentor, too. You're 8 months sober??? I'm 8 months sober this month!!! Congrats my friend!!

good video, i think another important but hard one is realizing your old using/drinking buddies aren't actually your friends and you have to ditch them unfortunately. or at least keep them at a very long arm's length

I enjoyed this after your video on being bored. I do some of these things you suggest, trying different and new things and switching it up. I didn't like AA all that much but definitely think a sponsor would help me. I do go to therapy once a week and we get along great. When I was going to AA I felt like all I would think about was being an addict and I find when I'm not focused on it I can keep going being sober. I didn't do rehab but I decided I was either going to go or stop on my own finally. Vodka and marijuana for me. Live by myself, work by myself so definitely was becoming a recipe for disaster. I'm still thinking about going back to AA as there isn't a lot of options out there like you said. Day 64 and going strong, I think 😬. I enjoy your upbeat attitude and your message! You can keep going too!

Awwww thank you so much!!! I'm so happy to hear that some of this information was helpful. I'm not an expert but this stuff definitely helped me stay sober so I thought I'd share. And AA really isn't for everyone, but community and mentorship I think everyone needs. So however we can find that is awesome. I'm sorry you're so isolated, that's really tough. That's where I was when I spiraled down into drugs and alcohol for like 3 years. It was horrible. Congrats on day 64!!! I will absolutely keep going in large part because of your encouragement and connection. With AA, I had to try a lot of different meetings until I found the right ones with the right people. Because like AA meetings are really different in different parts of the world, or even the city you live in. Where are you located?

@@annabarram I'm in Missouri. It's okay here and I do have a couple friends. I don't really like talking about my substance abuse to my friends or family. Honestly I'm not sure why I've mentioned my days sober here. My family is extremely judgmental and can't say anything to a few of them without EVERYONE knowing about it. Which is why I think I might benefit from a sponsor/ mentor. Honestly I've always enjoyed living by myself to a point but I certainly do get lonely. Thanks again for the encouragement and I wish you well! Until next time 🙂

Hey, found you via @shadesoclarity's recent shout out. This is good, useful stuff. Much respect for the time you've put into your production. I also love how you handle your relationship with AA. I have the same thing. Hate the brand, love the people. The journaling thing - people don't understand how good that is until they do it. It's not even just a sober thing, it's an everything thing. You good to know yourself better, reading your own thoughts back.

Oh I'm so happy to hear that you can relate to the whole AA thing!!! I always feel hesitant to talk about it because I love/hate it but don't want to offend anyone with that statement. Because the program has definitely worked wonders for me. Journaling is so tough. I actually am in the process of making an app that's recovery based journaling/affirmations/meditations. Because so many of my friends seemed to relapse in part because they stopped doing things like journaling, etc. Anyway, I'm very passionate about all of this stuff as you can see! I appreciate your comments about the video production and content quality. I put exhaustive work into these videos so I hope they can help someone. How long have you been in AA/sober and making video content about all of this?

@@annabarram I first started trying to get properly sober in the middle of 2019, but I was having about two relapses a year until last year. I can't promise I'm out of it now though - I mean, how do you know when you're finally sober, right? Do you get a certificate? I then started making videos about it after a REALLY bad relapse a year ago, but only in the last couple of months have I been doing it with any dedication. I've started treating the videos a bit like journaling. I love doing it, even to the detriment of the paid work I should be doing instead. Congrats on the app. I'm a brand marketing creativey type person too, and YOURS is a wicked good brand. I can really see the value in that idea. Kinda wish I'd thought of it first. When it's ready I'll be happy to amplify it however I can.

@@_BatCountry HAHAHA a certificate! That's a hilarious way to think of it. And, you're right. It's totally a journey/process not a destination to get sober. That's amazing you keep coming back after relapsing. So inspirational to hear about your experience, and helpful. I totally feel you on dedicating time to making video content about this being like a journal. It's so therapeutic for me! And a good creative outlet. What do you do for paid work? Branding/marketing stuff? Would love to hear more! And, thank you! That's so so kind of you to support me and the app!! I'm trying to really take the time to get it right before attempting to launch it. So stay tuned for updates. And I appreciate the feedback on the YOURS app brand. It's been a passion project and really cool to brand one of my own projects vs. a client's project for a change.

@@_BatCountry Shoot! Thought I replied to this...weird. Anyway, I wrote a really long response and can't remember everything I said now. But I'd love to hear more about your experience with branding/marketing. Also, thanks on the comment on the app and app branding! It's a passion project that I hope will help people, so we will see. Thanks for your support and encouragement. I appreciate it so much.

love life and I know you do , and yes that doesn't' make it easier at times but it sets a parameter and a goal to achieve to get you to the finish line if there is such a thing. I think it's more than that, there is no finish line per say but every day is a line to be at, make it simple doesn't have to complicated we have a tendency to f up things by making them to hard to achieve. the simplest things in life, nature, what have you can get you high in so many other ways we won't have time to do the chemical way..... thoughts and prayers always

@@annabarram I just started but they sent me Naltrexone, Neurontin, and Desyrel. I have not had Whiskey since the 22nd, have had beer and wine but a lot less, basically not pass out drunk. Just enough to calm the nerves. I like being drunk and drinking. So I got some non-alcoholic beer while I'm on these meds.
