would love to see some more details with the IntraDrive gearbox motor unit, its motor seems more advanced and probably has a simpler gearbox setup inside. From first ride vids of the pinion it seems to have two clunky shifts throughout the 12 speeds, maybe a 3x4 kind of setup inside?

There are two gear selection, one from the cranks to the intermediate shaft with 4 ratio dealing with legs torque, and the other from intermediate to output with 3 ratios, dealing with legs troque +motor. I suspect these shift to take more time as there is more torque to deal with.
@dvoob
@dvoob Жыл бұрын
really really cool. Did they have any in-bike model units you could test? I'm curious how much better the shifting under load is on this unit compared to the P & C series gearboxes. Does the electric assist play into the fact that you can shift under load, or could the same shifting be applied to a non assist gearbox?
@PeakTorque
@PeakTorque Жыл бұрын
Great question. I tried it. Shifting was very smooth, and silent BUT not instantaneous. Engineer confirmed they time it for low torque event (crank at 0, 180 deg) to help achieve smooth shifting. Still, it felt very fast apart from at low cadence when this becomes more obvious. The inward pulling pawls on the cam help this, unlike the outward engaging pawls on something like the effigear.

@@PeakTorque previous generations required that you consciously stopped your pedaling to shift, even though it only shifts at 12 and 6 o'clock, do you have to slow your pedalstroke or is it unnoticeable?

@@dvoob unnoticeable. I was banging through the gears like Colin McRae. However, it was a flat tarmac test ground, so not much torque. Should have tried it with the brakes on and some load. However, the motor assist in the top mode 'FLY' felt jerky. Not very smooth, quite on/off.

Maybe once they've finished designing all this stuff, they could design some better traditional mech driven road / gravel gruppos at reasonable prices too. Given the amount of R&D that goes into their products, and production costs, their existing gearbox products are incredible value by bike industry standards. I should think one of their top of the range non-E gearboxes costs at least 5x as much to produce as Campag's entire new SR gruppo - which is retailing well north of 5000 euros - 6000 if you want the PM version.

@@PeakTorque I know a bunch of people with newly bought gravel bikes where I live ... the people with stock 1x setups almost never ride them. Either they struggle to keep pace on the flat, don't have low enough gears for off road walls, or get sick of huge cadence jumps if there's a true wide range setup. The sensible bought or changed to 2x and ride their bikes. I hate the gearing on my 1x XC / DC bike, but we're not being given a choice. I'd much prefer 2x.

@@PeakTorque FYI, Shimano GRX 11s 2x will work with a 50-34 (using road FD) and 11/40, 11/42, or even in extremis an 11-46 (with a goat link) ... it works miles beyond the Shimano spec - albeit you lose 1 sprocket in each ring (big/big & small/small won't work). Very useful because Shimano 48/31 grx chainset has non-existent / dog shit power meter options.

@@PeakTorque I looked at the images on my monitor. It looks like its a Brushless DC Motor. The concentrated winding leads me to believe its a brushless dc motor with trapezoidal back EMF. Control method is likely a 6 step commutation. What is interesting is when you compare Pinion to BOSCH. The BOSCH ebike motor is wound to produce a sinusoidal back EMF. This enables BOSCH to use a much more advanced motor control technique. They appear to use Field Oriented Control which squeezes every bit of performance out of the motor.

The non-elect pinions are super popular with touring crowd because durability is prime and performance is on the low point of priorities.
