FREE SAMPLE PACKS
Drew Grit - drewgrit.bandcamp.com/album/v...
Spireview - spireview.bandcamp.com/album/...
As a producer I noticed that Kanye uses one production technique across every album and that is vocal one shots. His signature sound is largely considered to be pitched up chipmunk soul samples which he has used from the start on College Dropout, however as mentioned in the recent documentary this was the Chicago sound and that production technique doesn't feature in 808’s and Heartbreak.
In this video I analyse how he uses one shots in different ways, demonstrate how to make vintage sounding one shots that emulate warm analog signal processing, and also give away a pack of free samples.
I have to give shoutout to Kid Capone for his tip from his video “HOW TO MAKE VINTAGE SAMPLES LIKE A PRO” which highlighted how vintage reverbs should consist of spring, plate or room reverb because that's all they had to use back in the day, and he got this from another great producer Mario Luciano in one of his Masterclasses. Finally thanks to VOX for their video “Kanye, deconstructed: The human voice as the ultimate instrument", a sick video essay but I felt like I had more to add.
Also don't take this video too seriously, I am not trying to say definitively that vocal one shots define Kanye, all I am trying to do is point out his use of vocal one shots to inspire producers to try implementing them in their own productions. As well as try and get people thinking about replicating these analog processing chains instead of just throwing emulations on without thinking of the context in which they would be used.

The scream in Fire is from the ORIGINAL song sampled- "They're Coming To Take Me Away, Ha-Haa!" by Napoleon Romannumeralwhocares; it's the "HA!" at the end of the name being said.
@drewgrit_
@drewgrit_ 10 ай бұрын
Wow youre absolutely right, I was aware the drums were from that song because thats how its labelled on Whosampled but damn it definitely is the "HA!" at 0:39 too for the vocal one shot. You absolute king💪 thanks for clearing that up, I owe you one my friend!

Amazing stuff as always bro. Love the deep dive on something a lot of people might not even notice in Kanye's stuff! Those vocal one shots add so much. Editing on point too haha. Also love how you use almost all stock Ableton effects and free plugins. Just goes to show how powerful all that stuff is! I'll be sure to check out those sample packs too! Sick stuff!

Thank you bro, means a lot. It’s funny you say about the stock and free plugins too, I only decided recently that I was going to try go down that route to make the videos as accessible as possible. So I’m glad it’s been noticed😂😂 and definitely shot me a link if you do make anything with the pack, I know for a fact you know how to put it to good use haha✌️

Never too late to the party my friend! And they are definitely very similar screams, I hear what you’re saying for sure. But if you go to whosampled you can see the drums and scream are actually the same track💪 thanks for the comment!

Aw dude I could cry with happiness reading this comment haha definitely 99% of people don’t realise how much effort this video stuff is! Like it’s presented as happy good vibes but the behind the scenes planning a video, recording and then editing is a depressing mountain to climb every single time. So literally thank you so much my friend, it means a lot💪

Compression confidence is a phrase that was told to me by a mix engineer called Stan Kybert, I talk about him briefly in the PS1 reverb video. So can’t take credit for that phrase but the moment he said it I knew I would be saying it for the rest of my life haha Also I think you’re the first person to point out the phrase “compression confidence”, im glad someone else other than me thought it was cool haha thanks Jeff✌️

IMPORTANT KNOWLEDGE: Since the advent of multitrack tape in the '50s, we've only heard tape saturation on individual notes of individual tracks (which may be an unexpectedly loud vocal phrase, a piano, a whole drum subgroup in one channel in the late '60s AND the bass guitar!, or even a whole section of an orchestra back in the '50s), NOT across the whole mix of a commercial release! AND if ever tape saturation happened it was often accompanied by valve saturation from the desks prior to solid state. Valve saturation is a more common sound than tape saturation. Tape saturation was utilised for effect in some 2tr mixdowns/premasters, but wouldn't happen at mastering stage. Just at tracking stage. So to emulate it properly, it shouldn't be a uniform effect over some audio, but only kick in on the peaks in level of the audio. And I'd use the distortion of valve saturation instead! 😉🎶🕊️❤️

Looks like you’re checking out all the videos! Love that my friend💪 and yea you make a good point but I’d argue it’s even more complicated than the way you’ve just described it. Unfortunately I couldn’t describe it very well in written form so that might have to be a point of interest for another day on the channel. But either way thanks for sharing this great information!, there’s a lot to be learned from this✌️

Kanye likes to rerecord samples so im assuming he had someone say turn it up to better fit the song, and then still credited the sample
@drewgrit_
@drewgrit_ 10 ай бұрын
That is very true, he does do a lot of remaking samples with a producer called Ken Lewis, I believe that’s to do with copyright. It’s complicated but they can still use a sample if it’s not the master recording they are sampling. If that makes sense but yea maybe that is what happened! But also in my head I’m like “that’s just a generic phrase, why would he have to get that cleared?” Who knows tbh but yes great point, thanks for the comment my friend💪
