You and I are going to drink a lot of coffee together. Like, borderline dangerous amounts of coffee.
So, first things first. Pour yourself a mug and I’ll introduce myself real quick.
My name’s Jordan - but everyone calls me “J” - and I’m a 27th degree black belt in chugging coffee.
I’m also strength & nutrition coach, I hold several powerlifting world records, and I’ve been fortunate enough to have my writing featured in a variety of outlets like CNN, the Huffington Post, and Schwarzenegger.com.
But listen.
This channel isn’t for fame, publicity, cash, props, fist bumps, likes, pings, pows or whatever else there is.
It’s a place where you and I can chat.
I’ll never sugar coat, lie, or beat around the bush. I’ll tell you everything exactly as I see it. Some stuff you might like. Others you might not.
And that’s totally cool.
Either way, my goal here is to create a discussion. A place where you and I can get together, exchange ideas, and motivate each other to be better every day.
Like I said, we’re gonna drink a lot of coffee together - borderline dangerous amounts - but I’m excited. Because there aren’t too many online communities in which the sole purpose is to inspire and motivate one another.
And that’s exactly what you and I are going to do here.
To your success,
-J

“How many calories should I eat to lose fat?”
The same question comes in day after day so, please, if you’re not sure how many calories you need to eat to lose fat (or which formula to use to calculate your deficit) lean in and listen close.
There is no such thing as the perfect formula.
It doesn’t exist.
No formula is 100% accurate and no formula can account for each and every, teeny tiny, eency weency individual difference between you and fucking Karen or Kevin or Kyle or Millicent Bulstrode.
Seriously.
Stop wasting your time looking for the best formula because they’re all different and you’ll spend more time wondering which is “best” and less time actually doing what you need to do to see results.
Is using goal weight better than current weight?
No.
It’s just one way I’ve used with my Inner Circle members and clients that works very well.
What if you don’t have a goal weight because [insert dramatic story of why you don’t use the scale anymore]?
Great, don’t use a goal weight. Use your current weight or another formula altogether.
Listen.
There are no absolutes in fitness. None. It’s a constant ebb and flow and the moment you think you’ve found the “right” answer is the moment you’ll see you have none of the answers.
Get used to playing guess and check. Plug and play. Start with something and adjust as needed. Don’t get caught up in being perfect from the start because that won’t happen.
Calculate your deficit.
Be consistent with those numbers for 4 weeks.
Track your progress.
Not making progress? Reduce your cals.
Making progress faster than necessary? Increase your cals.
Great, sustained progress? Keep ‘em the same.
That’s it.
That’s the magic formula to find how many calories you need to lose fat.
Ta da!!!!

Hi, I’m 12 , 5 feet and 5 inches, and weigh 146-147 pounds currently. My goal weight is 120 pounds I multiplied that by 12 and got around 1400 calories do you think that will work if I try it out for 90 days?

I am 190 I always been 145 my whole life at one point lower than that I've gained over 50 lbs in the last 4 years and now that I am engaged I am wanting more to be healthy again. kzfaq.infoUgkx5VQ5nUzHu6i0O5_u7ipyLnCz0lbsSvr0 I am not fat but I am thick and have muscle. I am very close to how you were but a lil smaller but I am so sick people making comments to me like I'm huge or like you said having shorts that used to be so cute on me and now I can't even find a pair to fit me. I used to love shopping now I don't even want to go to the store and if I do I pick the biggest size don't even try it on and deal with it. I went from size 5 to size idk because I don't even want to know the real number. I hate looking at pics of myself now or me before. thank you for your video it's time to make a change.

Jordan Syatt is there a problem if I go beyond my necessary grams of protein? I am on Keto for more than a year, lost quite some weight, am healthy and happy, but did hit a plateau because - as I know now - had a too high kcal intake. I feel bad on more than 20% carbs, and the fat is not always my friend if I need to watch kcal, so the proteins go up to 40, even 50%. Will this work for a weight loss on a calorie deficit?

Just started listening to your podcast, loving the content! I was actually too scared to watch this video.. I thought I'd have to be too aggressive with my calories. I'm 4 weeks into a "challenge" with another IG fitness person and the calories are horrendous and it has brought up all my binge eating issues due to the restriction. This video and your podcasts have saved me. I've still got more work to do from a mental health point of view, but I've reached out for help with that, and I know this will help.. no more restriction. Thank you Jordan.

I worked all weekend and couldn’t watch until today but I loved this. There is sooooo much information out there on weight loss and it can be overwhelming. I am an educated medical professional and I still learn something from all of your videos. That being said, I would love to hear your thoughts on macros. I have tried many combos with varied results and I’m sure you have a no-nonsense approach. Can’t wait to hear it.

I already knew my recommended daily caloric intake from a while back when I was in a health kick for a few years. Needless to say, I fell off the wagon and I'm here searching youtube on how to calculate calories just to be sure and this equation is pretty spot on. Thanks for the down and dirty explanation video. Subbed.

Question about this. If u have over 100 lbs to lose, how many grams of protein a day? From your other video I would be looking at like 260g per day

good estimate at first, but definitely needs to be adjusted according to different activity levels/body compositions. i say use this as a starting goal, then compare your median weight across several weeks to see if you're losing weight at an appropriate rate. you probably have to omit the weight change from the first couple days as most of it would be water and glycogen.

Just learned that I’ve been practically starving myself because of My Fitness Pal. I can eat an additional 400-500 calories a day to get to my goal weight now. Thanks so much for this video!! A video on macros would be really helpful too! Thanks for everything you do!

Agreed. I maintain on 1750-1850 calories, but using the 12x multiplier gives me only 1260! That's WAYYYYY too low! I'd be dying! LOL!

Thanks for the great video! Is GBW x 12 applicable even if you can’t workout currently due to recovering from a surgery (not counting daily modest paced 45-60min walks)? Should you strive for fat loss when recovering/in between surgeries, or can a calorific deficit hinder healing? I keep finding contradicting info on this. Hoping you’re able to reply. :)

Thank you so much for keeping it simple. Seriously. Out of curiosity, I took my current weight and plugged it into the equation to find out how many calories i eat a day. I only have to eat 120 calories less a day to lose 10 lbs!? I have over 50 to lose and this just helped me not be overwhelmed with complicated equations and stress about going 5 calories over!! I dont care about losing it all quickly, I just want something simple and sustainable. Thank you so much for your helpful insight.

Yes on the macro video!!! I know you probably get heaps of requests for info on keto but while we are on the subject of carbs?? Maybe a lil explanation on why it works for so many people??? Is it because of the (usually) drastic switch from calorie over load to switching to a diet high in veggies and protein therefore lower calorie?? Alsoooooo is this simplified magic calorie equation our grand total for the day?? Eg food - exercise??
