Today, in the first of our series of videos following the impact that World Bicycle Relief, we meet Lizzie. Like many children in rural Zambia, Lizzie has a lot of responsibility on her shoulders to help with daily chores, as well as going to school. Owning a Buffalo Bicycle donated by World Bicycle Relief for the last year has made this possible.
Orphaned at a young age, 13 year old Lizzie lives with her grandmother in a mud brick hut in rural Zambia. Since she received a Buffalo Bicycle from World Bicycle Relief just over a year ago, life has been a lot better. Every morning even before school she must collect water from three kilometres away for cooking and drinking, a task which is made so much easier using her bike.
The Buffalo Bicycle helps Lizzie to make the 5km journey to school every day, so that she arrives feeling refreshed rather than exhausted from the tiring journey on foot. It also helps young girls like Lizzie to stay safe on what can be a treacherous daily journey.
World Bicycle Relief have conducted extensive studies that show that the Buffalo Bicycles not only improve attendance, but also improve student performance.
Thank you for watching LIzzie's story. Please share to spread the word about World Bicycle Relief's incredible work, and visit gcn.eu/WBR16 to donate.

Wow! I know many of us have been watching GCN for quite some time, and to be honest, I wasn't expecting such a heartfelt and inspirational upload today. This is a beautiful portrait of what happens when a group of well-meaning individuals, programs, and organizations come together to really help others and change the world. Like many stated before me, this is the best video on GCN thus far and I am looking forward to your continued series and thanks to your team for putting the time together to share this positivity with the world.

Been genuinely looking forward to this series since you announced it and as everybody has said, this has to be the very best video GCN has released. I think we say this not because of the production quality or humor, but because of the humanist tone and the demonstration of cycling as a universally positive force in the world. I am more convinced than ever, GCN needs a channel dedicated to content like this - cycling culture and activism! Chapeau GCN

To those who thinks she seems a bit snobby or uninterested, that is how some kids first act when around foreign people and are expected to use their english under pressure. She is just very shy and nervous about being placed in the spotlight. If you would ride, play, teach or talk with them for a few more days, they will open up and be a happy kid without apprehension. You see this behavior when working with kids in Asia too. Those who are most reserved up front tend to be the most interesting, hardest working and loyal. Its amazing how kids from polar opposite environments have the exact same behavior. Being a computer science major, I used to think that the integrated circuit was the greatest work we as a species have yet accomplished, but the deeper into cycling I get...

Im not zambian but Im a non native english speaker I can confirm this. We mostly know english to translate videos or texts in our heads, but we use our native language for everything else and so when we actually have to use the conversational part its a bit awkward because our pronunciation doesn't match the idea we have in our heads. For example in my head Im using a british accent to write this comment like the guy from the video, but my real accent is a weird mix of american and bad pronunciation

An African philosopher once said that as soon as we put a motor on something we lose sight of what a human can honestly do. By providing these bikes we do more for the world and the humans involved than we can ever know. Dan and the boys are making the world a better place one bike at a time. I hope that this project becomes part of the role of the GCN Club. Imagine " GCN Ride for World Bicycle Relief" events all over the globe. We could do it!!

I remembered on what happened back in the late 90’s when there was a Civil war between the Hutus and the Tutsis: Having a bicycle DETERMINES whether you live or you DIE. If you have a bicycle then you’ll getaway riding the bicycle but if you walk? You’re as good as dead. I’m just happy that the people from Africa are now using bicycles for their everyday life. I’m just really humbled on how lucky I am living in America which is a First World country! I can get a bicycle anytime that I wanted and I’m grateful that I have 2 of them and enjoy riding every given chance good weather or not. The bicycle is INDEED the most efficient machine ever invented by man and it was crucial and integral part of the Industrial revolution.

Great work Dan, World Bicycle Relief, and GCN for putting a spotlight on this section of the world. First to the detractors, yes theft, violence, and just plain maintenance are serious issues. But, it it very difficult to understand the value system that children like Lizzy are brought into. Subsistence farming is the way of life, and making $300 dollars cash a year is no small feat. This affects everything that they do, so much so that any private possession is often considered shared property. i.e. my brother's/sister's bike is also my bike! So, for each of us, I would say, explore the underlying values, ideals that make it possible to have a more prosperous life. A stable society, basic infrastructure, basic education, access to clean water. These are just a few of the hurdles that must be tackled by people like Lizzy. When everyone has a bike then maybe theft will cease to be a problem, and bike mechanics can become a viable trade for a fortunate few. GCN has really surprised me with their caring spirit and their love for our great sport! Way to GO!!!

In my heart of hearts, to my GCN hero Dan Lloyd and others that make up the GCN crew. From one end of the spectrum to the other...from serious cycling to serious humanitarian help. In our complex and troubled world GCN has shown how cycling can make a global connection for the good of people in need. Thru cycling GCN has always shown seamless differences in nationality, ethnicity, and cultures bringing us all closer instead of being worlds apart. tIts so true...its Global Cycling! many thanks...

Donated last week. Great to see people using a bicycle to better their lives! Seeing all those bikes on the rack at 5:09 with open bar ends because the grip wore thru does make me cringe! When I was a kid I saw a guy doing the normal neighborhood garbage can plywood ramp jump and when he bailed the bars turned and the bar stuck straight into the ground. His knee landed on the opposite bar end removing a perfect circle of knee cap right to the bone from he's right knee. I remember it like it happened yesterday. He was in a cast for what seemed like a year. I hope they're not getting to rad on their Buffalo Bikes!

Incredible how much a bicycle can change the world and the lives of so many people. As a cyclist it's crossed my mind more than once whether or not something like this would work as a means of transport on wheels changes how one operates in the world not just on a lesiurely level, but things like cost, theft, maintenance and such would be major factors. To see this in action and to know it works makes me proud to be a cyclist. It's nice to see that these bikes are also built strong and simple enough to require very little expense to make and maintain, which for a family on a super low income can be a huge problem. Thanks for sharing, GCN.
