Thats a pretty industrial and robust sauna you made there. I also recently made a DIY wood burning sauna in my backyard and I absolutely love it. I documented the whole process for my channel. I like the double purpose sauna for steaming both yourself and getting big volumes of water hot at the same time.

Do you think some half inch copper tubing that wrapped around the stove pipe like the worm on a moonshine still would work for a shower? Maybe a tank mounted on the wall, with a shower head and ball valve coming from the bottom of the tank? I'm guessing the distance from the flame might make the perfect temperature shower.

Been looking for practical DIY ideas on building a steam maker for a small sauna I want to build in my workout room. Fought athsma all my life and found that a hot steam room helped me keep my lungs clear. Now they are saying that the covid 19 virus dies in heat and or steam, so I am really motivated to get my small 4 person Sauna built. (I'm over 65 and healing from 2 broken legs. Ski Diving landing gone wrong!) Plus I like to finsh off a workout with a steamy relaxing heat soak. Thanks for posting up your build. Will do a simular only probably use propane.

In the process of building my own; your vid helped in building a wood stove with water tank - thanks. From scratch takes time; mixed cement on weekends this spring, (gravel, French drain, etc.) sourced rough cut 2x4’s and shiplap cedar locally (3 months till delivery) and just took two weeks off to build. Did you line with foil? I cheaped out and used tinfoil with high heat tape in sauna room only. Still have to finish the floor, build a stove, hang doors, wire in lights. Was thinking of clay/sand mix coated with linseed oil for floor....thoughts?
@KnettersPracticalOutdoors
@KnettersPracticalOutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
No foil and we just used plain old cement for the floor. I think it's been up for over 15 years now. Check out the up-grade to the stove we did in this video, kzfaq.info/get/bejne/lZ50iKeL173KZn0.html You might find it interesting. Especially if you're building a stove. KPO.

Hi KPO, thank you so much for this video. I have been searching like crazy on the internet for some more information about your design but I havent seen a replication/copy of it yet. Do you mind if I ask you some questions about it? 1) Did you receive the stove with the interior pipe (the back boiler) already installed or did you weld one in yourself? 2) What is the diameter of the two exiting pipes which circulate the hot/cold water? 3) How many gallons is the steel metal drum you have holding the heated water to the right of the stove? Thank you for the input! Michelle
@KnettersPracticalOutdoors
@KnettersPracticalOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the interest Michelle. We got the stove used and it had the interior pipe already. Ideally there would be more pipe on the inside of the stove but ours just had a small piece (takes longer to warm up). i think the pipes are about 1 or 11/4 inch diameter. The tank is actually an old beer keg, I think 5 gallon. I hope this helps. Some sauna stoves have a tank built right into the side of the stove. Thanks for watching, KPO.

Hey, Dave - Nice video informative and full of practical tips on how a sauna works . . . By the way, how is your floor drain rigged? Into the sauna's own drain field, a municipal sewer system, or other method. Doesn't seem like much water would be going into the drain, but the water has to go somewhere . . . Thank you in advance for your reply, and keep up the good work!

Hi KPO, about your stove, There are no exits for the water on the top? How long does it take for the water to completely steam away from one dippers worth....your size dipper? What about radiant heat from the stove? Built my sauna 28 years ago...14 x 8 1/2 feet... 5 x 8 1/2 changing room. I moved it once to another rental....a major pain..... bought property in 2011, but was allowed to keep at old rental thankfully.....but want to build one at My House now. Thinking of stoves. Mine is made from a 40 gallon hot water tank, flat plate on top to heat water in stainless tub, but I would consider a different style. I do at least one sauna (Monday nights) a week and hopefully 2 or 3 if my buddy calls me over to his about 1/4 mile away. It is my church and place I "pray" for those who have left us. When I get another built it will be 3 or 4 a week like it was when I lives where it is.. Love watching vids on Saunas and can tell yours would be sweet to sit in. Thanks and keep up the good work--Lopez Island, Wa---Texas Bob
@KnettersPracticalOutdoors
@KnettersPracticalOutdoors 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment Texas Bob. The water on top is just in a big cooking pot. Just your basic warming on the top of a stove. I've never really paid attention to the steam away rate but I guess one dipper is done and the stove is dry in less than a minute. With a decent fire it takes about an hour to get the water scalding hot and the sauna room nice and warm during the fall season. Thanks for watching, KPO.

Drains into a drain field/tank. We just took a plastic 55 gal drum and buried it on the side of the sauna. We have the drain go to it. Many holes in the drum so the water will eventually drain back to the earth. Filled the drum with pieces of concrete block so it won't collapse over time. The drum is mostly below the frost line, so no issues. And also we don't use it very often in the winter, but when we do, no freezing problems.

I don't really pay attention to the actual temp, but like most wood saunas, if you let the stove go full heat it can get too hot to even be inside. I believe the sauna room itself is 8 X 10, changing room 4 X 8, all with ceilings at 71/2 or 8 (can't remember for sure). Insulated 2 X 4 stud walls. Thanks for the interest, KPO.

@KnettersPracticalOutdoors
@KnettersPracticalOutdoors Жыл бұрын
Well it can vary because of outside temps or how aggressive you want to be with working on it. We usually get the fire going and then put a few bigger pieces of maple in and let it do it's thing. That might be 1 - 2 hours to get it hot in the fall time of the year. But if you want to keep putting smaller pieces of maple in, it can go faster.

Pipe nipples that stick out the side of the stove and attach to a pipe inside the stove and on the tank side they just attach to nipples on the side of the tank, KPO.

In Finland - We have two million saunas ! The thing I missed was - under the fire - the burning needs oxygen - so the firewood are placed on a ( plate with holes ) - so the ashes - run under - into a box - that has an outside handle ! You open / shut this - to give more or less oxygen ! Easy to get the ashes away - too ! Have Fun - I am Off to My sauna now !

Holo, yes many of the sauna stoves we have here are like that too. Many of the just plain wood stoves are like that too. The area I live at has a large number of Finnish decedents, so we have a lot of saunas where I live also. Thanks for adding in, KPO.

I'm in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, United States. We get a lot of snow. Like I said earlier we have a large number of Finnish people that live here too. Locally we even have a Finnish store. It's called "Touch Of Finland". The store carries sauna supplies, but it also carries Finnish food items too. Many people in this area have the last name "Koski" or "Maki" and many last names end with "ainen" like yours. I'm not Finnish, but that's how I got turned on to the sauna experience, KPO.

Would love a few links to Finnish sauna (wood) stoves - whether it's KZfaq or not! I'm going to be building an outdoor sauna and will use wood to heat it - I'm in Maine. Thanks for any help!

@@parkerfairfield201 The thing is that - No too many build the STOVE ITSELF - but the Walls ! We have some Companies ( The Coca Cola of Sauna ) - that try to keep IT - as a secret ! But actually that stove - is guite easy ! You need steel - that can the the heat - thik enough ! So thet the fire wont - burn thru it ! Ventilation under the fire / into a box - where you may gather the ashes easy ! To pull & push - the same box you give oxygen to the - under - the fire ! You must remember the ventilation - because of the moisture ! Sauna heat will dry the sauna !
