I have to say I really enjoyed the honest brief review. James seemed not to try to hide any cons a I respect him for that. Not many people are willing to admit that their bike has got also some negatives.

Got one, love it. Gets 4.6l/100 km (51mpg US, 61mpg UK) mileage for me as an average, I live near Calgary Alberta so constantly up and down in the foothills. Not many km's on it yet (approx 10,000) but a very easy riding machine and maybe a bit boring for some, but then I am a bit boring for some. LOL

Ive had yamaha dt125, suzuki rm125, hoda cr 250 when i was young . In army i broke down some KTM 640,S .. . now last couple of years ive had yamaha fz6s with 2004 70 000+ km on it and not a sing problem.. now i ordered the new tenere 700 and its going to be my first brand new bike .. hope i will get it soon here in Finland.. This is a great video. I have had mine for over a year now and I love it. Upgraded it with a touratech shock and progressive springs and made the bike even better. I think this is one of the most underrated bikes in the adventure segment

I've had to clean the fork seals once (fork removal not required) in 120,000km, so there's a knock against reliability ;) at 80km/h or less you can expect 3.5l/100k.

The 2010-2013 models had the restrictions in the lower gears. Short out the clutch interlock switch to derestrict; this gives a big advance of ignition at full-throttle, it's best to reflash the ECU. Again the 2010-2013 models have been known to have camchain tensioner rattle, it's just a quick swap for the update 2014- tensioners. The manual calls for valve clearance checks every 24,000 kms, but as the owner stated it's a pain, and in the real-word can be left to 50,000 kms if the engine is running well. 2014 models have no lower gear restrictions, and a quieter clutch. The XT1200ZE model has the electronically adjusted suspension and cruise control.

Rode my 2013 from San Diego to Alaska, then up to Tuktoyutuk in NWT, Canada to dip my toes in the Arctic Ocean, then across the USA to dip my toes in the Atlantic Ocean and then home. Had two issues, the air box got full of water while riding through pouring rain for 700 miles (the bike still ran, just didn't run great) and the fork seals started to leak after 1000 miles of dirt roads. Amazing bike.

I have the 2009 xt660z. 89k on the clock. Still love it. I was looking at an upgrade to xt1200z as the price has come down alot for used. However, i looked at all the things i could do to my xt660z and have reconsidered. The xt660z will be in my stable for many years to come. Loved the review and hope you guys had a great ride. I have a 1979 xs 650. same type of parallel twin. I have wanted a Super Tenere for a while. I like the shaft drive and wondered why more manufacturers don't do that. The BMW GS1200 is very comparable to it. Both wonderful bikes.

My 2012 model has been great. I have put a battery in it and change the fluids and tires. It's like a way more powerful KLR, one of which is also in my garage.

This is the best adv tourer available, have taken my 2014 up and over Lundins Neck pass, Wartrail pass and Sani pass, all serious passes here in South Africa. And it being a Yamaha, reliability is standard. Love my S10!!

These bikes are bulletproof. The weight is an issue when you have to pick it up by yourself (so always ride with mates) and another downside is the relatively low ground clearance (compared to KTM and BMW). I was doing some hectic trail riding recently and put a good couple of dents in the bash plate (so it did its job, but a few extra centimeters of clearance would be good). I have had my 2017 model flashed and so I tend to ride it hard (in sport mode all the time) and I get 16 to 17 km/l (6,25 - 5,88 l/100km) - 38mpg in town. On the open road it depends on speed and wind.

Word of warning if you have a secondhand pree 2014 super ten and you have not changed the came chain tensioner do so if you get any rattle on start up. Google the problem ?

I know you're tall but did you have any trouble with the tall seat height? 33.1" is pretty darned tall; the Honda VFR1200x is even taller at 33.4". Any comments appreciated. Ciao!

Haha, it's nice to hear those mpg/ L/100km figures, but I never hear at what speeds you;re getting those;)) Because 80+mph / 130kph+ and you're looking at 7+ liters / 40mpg. Or it's just my bike a fluke;)) Valve clearance: I can confirm that they are in spec after 24 400 miles. How does the Super Tenere handle when overloaded by 30-40 kgs? What do I have to do to be able to over loaded to that level? Thanks! Cheers for the great content as always!

Just an anecdote, but put 6,400 miles on a 2015 Super Tenere ES over the course of 3 years, and had zero issues with it at all, including starting up effortlessly after being garaged through each winter.

The only issue I've had with mine is that it felt very lumpy like it was missing. After a test ride by a mechanic he said a ignition coil rod was faulty. The coil set are £600+ for genuine item but before you shell out for them smear some vaseline around the black banding on the coil. If its rusty you might need to replace. Afterwards the bike run fine like normal hand has done for about 10k.

i dont think a differential is an accurate way to describe it because that’s usually for 2 wheels so that they can spin independently
