As an indian fan, I never understood why india opposed drs coming into effect... Despite being on the receiving end of wrong umpiring in the australia series of 2007-08 (the great Buckner controversy!😝) and also that drs saving tendulkar in the semifinal of 2011 was the turning point for India, I still wondering why bcci were reluctant to use it!

Technology only betters a game. So many batsmen have overturned a LBW decision because they knew they nicked the ball. And so many bowlers have picked up obvious wickets because of Hawkeye technology. If you want the technology to improve, that's reasonable. But claiming DRS is ineffective because it uses predictions is foolish. That's literally what the umpire is doing as well. Plus, I think abusing the system is difficult when you're only given two chances to review. In fact, I think they should increase the ODI reviews to two as well. Discussion should always, and is, continuing on that front. The real problem these days, the most controversial business in terms of reviewing anything, is the "soft signal". It befuddles me: If you're sending a soft-signal to the third-umpire, you're sending it because you can't tell for certain if it's out or not, but then why give a decision in the first place? If you don't need a soft signal for run-outs, then you don't need one for catches. Let the third-umpire come to the decision independently.
@rushpan93
@rushpan93 5 жыл бұрын
I don't understand why there has to be any limit put at all. There's always a chance of a bad umpiring decision having slipped through. All this talk about preserving the sanctity of the game with the umpires is just the cherry on top. It's like discovering fire and then only poking it with a stick
@theendurance
@theendurance 5 жыл бұрын
Soft signal and umpires call are both really stupid. Why use technology at all when your still relying on the umpires call? I think that firstly, drs should be unlimited and that there should be no umpires call. Decisions should be as correct as possible, doesn't matter how many times a team uses it. If a team runs out of reviews and they get a bad call by the umpire, they just got cheated out of a wicket. Relying just on human umpires is dumb and there have probably been thousands of wrong decisions made that ruins the game.

The only change i can think of that benefits bowlers in a game that is overwhelmingly run by and for the benefit of batters. Better gloves and less cumbersome batting pads, helmets, drop the rest day in test matches, rope the boundaries to make the ground smaller AND massive improvement in bat performance. Finally something that not only makes the game more fair, but also helps the bowlers get just reward for their efforts. It may not be 100% perfect, but it is so much better, such an excellent improvement.
@nayankhanna2367
@nayankhanna2367 3 жыл бұрын
And even after this DRS and 3 reviews per innings for both the bowling and batting teams, umpiring levels are horrible. Today, in IND vs AUS 2nd test, 2nd innings, India had to forego 4-5 LBW wickets just because of Umpire's Call. Still India managed to dismiss Australia for 200, but it actually was 200 for 15 wickets than just 10. Aussie umpires seem to be a lot lot biased, the Tim Paine's run out was highly controversial too.
@osmiumgus8025
@osmiumgus8025 2 жыл бұрын
Nayan, international cricket hasn’t had hometown umpires for well over 20 years. They were not “Aussie umpires”, they were independent international ICC umpires. Umpire’s call rule is the main frustration for everyone, but remember this: DRS is supposed to prevent the howlers, to overturn the really terrible decisions. If we didn’t have DRS, the umpire’s call was final and would still be the decision.
@mahmoodhasan8129

DRS is most definitely good for cricket. Why? Does anyone remember the good old days. Hello.... so much controversy, so much dissatisfaction. Yes, there is still room for improvement in the technology. But this is way-way better than what we had before. Sound based Edge Detection Technology could use a little help. Other unintended sounds can get in the way. Infra Red Camera is absolutely spot on. Ball-tracking system is a breath of fresh air. Margin of error is minuscule and negligible. This is far better than what a human eye can detect. Its most effective contribution in cricket is on LBW decisions. Oh, I remember those horrible days in the past. You just simply want to forget those days. On run-outs, stumping and catches it certainly adds more value to accurate decision making. I'm telling you, its a night and day difference from the nightmarish past. Lastly, two things. 1. Run-Outs do not require reviews from players. NO-BALLs should be reviewed in the same exact way. Big-big hole there, still exists. Specially, on waist-height and above-head-height calls. Major emergency required there. 2. ICC should reconsider adding more review options on the game. Why? Think about it. Why should the team dread almost feverishly whether to lose or retain their reviews in the first place. Their prime focus should be concentrated on the game itself and not on officiating matter. To get the 'right decision' should always be the prime objective of the game. And, should not be, to please the umpire's ability or inability. Or, worse case scenario, add to the existing reviews as an add-on like a run-out type third-umpire call by the on-field-umpires themselves. Still, better than having no options whatsoever.

The main reason DRS has caused controversy is that cricket is an inaccurate game. It was never meant to be played competitively. Any decision made by the on field umpire was taken as true and 100% correct, even if it wasn't, which is not good if you're playing cricket competitively.

DRS when introduced in the series between India and SL in 2008 didn't have the predictive element to it. The third umpire had to judge the remaining path and that was the first and probably the only time when Hawk eye was not a part of DRS. Later on there were unavailability of hawk eye in some countries and unavailability of snicko and hot spot in others which again added to India's reluctance, then there was a 2.5m rule that if a batsman in 2.5m away from stumps, umpires decision will be upheld and who can forget the team challenging the decision loosing their review if it was an umpire's call. In my view the current system is much better now in its consistency and application and the original introduction had too many flaws in it.

Thereafter ganguly dravid and tendulkar were included in the world cup squad for 2007 t20. However they themselves omitted their names as they thought that youngsters were apt for this format.
