There should be a certificate program or some sort of basic degree one could train for if local apprenticeships are not available....even if some of the coursework can only be done by distance learning. At least if someone can complete that, they will be more attractive to local studios, who may want to take them more seriously as an apprentice

its definitely tricky as there are piercers in my area, but NONE are APP certified. The only one "close" is 1.5 hours away. I don't plan on moving just yet, so I'm enrolling in esthetician school for now. Maybe once i move in the future i can find a quality studio I'd enjoy

I knew I wanted to pierce since I was about 16. when I first started getting them. I was an apprentice in NJ in September of 2020. I was a client of this person for about 11 years- since they opened as a tatoo shop so since I was a great client of theirs I got an apprentice. I didnt pay for it , never signed a contract, was never sexually abused during my apprenticeship, but wasnt paid for the first two months. Unfortunately I realized I didn't have the best apprenticeship. I moved to vegas and worked as a piercer for 1 year. I'm going to start my second apprenticeship at another shop that uses quality body jewelry. I'm really excited to start!

thank you so much for this video!! its answered a lot of my questions in one convenient 40 minute package. i am curious, though, if you would advise searching for an appreticeship while in college? i turn 18 and go to college in a few months and have wanted to pursue body piercing since i was very young, but the knowledge that apprenticeships entailed years of unpaid labor has always ruled that option out for me. now that more apprenticeships are paid, though, ive been considering searching for one while im taking college classes. is this doable/advisable, or is this a terrible idea?

A huge part of our job as piercers is talking to other people. We talk to literally hundreds of strengths every week- and more then that we need to make total strangers feel comfortable with us, trust us, and be vulnerable with us. You can have all the passion for piercing in the world but if you don’t want to interact with people you won’t make a great piercer. You may however find your calling in this industry making jewelry or working for a body jewelry company! You can still have all your piercings and be yourself- without all the human interaction of being a piercer.

You can look for free or low cost legal aid in your area and they can help you go over your options in your situation. You'll want to gather as many records you have of your situation as well, i.e. time slips if you have them, conversations where your employer said they don't have to pay you, things that explain your job duties and the terms of your apprenticeship, etc. You might be careful letting your workplace know your plans until you have everything planned out bc while retaliation is illegal, it does happen and it can be hard to prove.

there is no shop near or around my town but i wanna start. ive been piecing my friends and i forever! ive been to many piercings shops to get piercings and saw how things work. i think the best option for me would probably be watching a bunch of REAL professional piercers walk thru everything on youtube. i think to start im only going to do ears, nose, lips, navel, and nipples. im very familiar with all those things, knowing the anatomy/nerves, all that. i am going to first be taking an exposure control training corse and apply for a permit in my state (WV). i know you probably would strongly suggest i not since i cant apprentice, but its been 7 years ive been piercing and ive been doing lots of research and walk throughs. the only thing that maybe be hard is getting all the inventory at first. i wanna have the best stuff and cute quality jewelry. do you have any site recommendations to order everything from? ive been looking at Painful Pleasures and Kingpin.

You are correct- this is entirely the wrong way to go about getting into the industry. You can not properly learn things online especially as much of piercing is tactile- having a mentor show you how to manipulate the tissue, feel for proper placement, understand proper angles through the tissue. Imagine if someone said “there’s no good medical schools in my town but I want to be a doctor! I think I’m going to watch videos of surgery online and practice at home and learn to be a doctor that way”. We would tell them to relocate to get properly educated. Piercing is the same way. WV is not a terrible far drive from six16 and hot rod in Pittsburg, evolved in Columbus, brilliance, Freya, infinite, and fidelity. You have a bunch of amazing studios within driving distance that you could go to and potentially try to get an apprenticeship with. There are people who live in entire countries without good piercers who move /out of their country/ to learn properly. I moved from Philly to florida to learn correctly. I have peers who have relocated from Idaho to California and from florida to Nashville to learn. The fact that you are in an area with dozens of amazing piercers within 2-5 hours of you but that’s not close enough for you to want to learn correctly is shameful- and your clients deserve better.

@Lynn_Loheide
@Lynn_Loheide 5 ай бұрын
In my opinion any studio that is nice and reputable is going to pay you a living wage and not break the law and exploit your labor. /Reputable/ studios don’t condone labor exploitation.
