I can't believe how far this industry has come from the 60s and 70s. It's so cool that you got to interview the people who were instrumental in getting the piercing industry off the ground. I love videos like this so much! It's so fascinating to learn about stuff like this!

this was so informative- i had no idea that the piercing industry and all the safe practices that come with it are relatively new. this makes sense now as to why my piercing shop is advertised as "one of the worlds longest running studios", opening in 1991. thanks for all the piercing history videos you make!

Wow! Lynn, this is so awesome!! Thank you for doing this research to educate all of us! Hugs! Until the 1960s, even regular earlobe piercing was unfashionable and looked down on in a classist way (only “DPs”, displaced persons, also known as immigrants, from Europe had pierced earlobes!). I knew only two girls in elementary school who had pierced ears, one from Germany and one from Yugoslavia. I wanted pierced ears like them! I got the self piercers in 1971, but I took them out too soon to put in regular earrings, so I ended up using a sewing needle with thread to keep the holes open to get earrings in. This was standard for all of us in the day. My kid sister got her ears pierced at a department store, which used the gun-type jewelry but pushed through manually into a cork backing. I later got one piercing with a gun, which did work out ok. My first “official” piercing was my navel in 1999. My daiths in the last two years have been a dream! Living history! Love and respect and thanks to all piercers and especially to the loving needle manufacturers who make this all possible! We’ve come a long way, baby!!!❤️✊

This video has not only been a lot more interesting than I originally thought, but it also helped me to understand why my parents' and grandparents' generation has such a huge prejudice against piercings

This was super interesting! I love this. I feel like the body piercing industry can be so secretive sometimes, it's so nice to learn its history.

The first days of body piercing were so hardcore. I remember piercing myself in the early 90s with safety pins and really anything that was even remotely sharp. A lot of kids were doing that, it was very common. Then we’d stretch up from there.

That’s how it was back then! That’s all we had access to. It’s wild how much it’s grown since then but also how relatively young it all is.

When my dad was a teen he pierced threw his own ear with an earring. I sometimes poke fun at him for it because he still has the holes even 20+ years without jewelry in them lol. But man I didn’t release just how far we have come in the piercing industry that’s awesome!

My grandma got her ears pierced with an ice pick back in the 50s. She said that her lobes got infected & turned green, so she ended up taking the piercings out. Back in the 90s I had my ears pierced with a gun at Claire's, and in 2007 I pierced my nipples with a saftey pin 🙃 It's so crazy how much the body modification industry has advanced in just under a span of 15 years.

Living in Switzerland, before piercing gun , people got their ear pierced with needle for sewing, it was often the grandma who pierced the young girls and let 3 days the cotton after piercing, and putting gold jewel after these 3days. And jewelry gold was often inherited from older grandma so it was an act of passing jewelry to new generation. When I've heard of that I was really surprised 😮 I don't know about steriliser but between heated water to flame I think it was it . 😂then gun piercing took place in supermarkets, jewelry so people went there a lot .
