Another good thing to help playing with straight or hooking it is changing the amount of steps on your approach. doing a 5 step approach over a 4 step will generate more ball speed n power which is good for playing straight but that 4 step will help slow it down for when you need to hook it

If you're throwing straight and the ball goes to the right, simply move your body over two boards to the right and throw normally. If it goes left, move two boards to the left.

In my form of bowling,candlepin, the lanes a rarely oiled! Lets face it a 2.6 lbs ball isn't going to do much damage! However, hooking the ball is extremely difficult in my game,although it might be necessary on the second, or third ball. Yes we get three rolls per frame. Also in candlepin, the downed pins are not removed after every shot. This can help,or hurt if shooting a spare, or ten box! For example,7-10 splits are converted all the time,because of the deadwood! For a good first ball,speed a accuracy are key! My hardest ball I can roll is 38 mph! You hit the sweet spot, our skinny tall pins fly! But of an inch or so can be a strike,or just punching the 2 or 3 pins out,alone! That's why in candlepin there has never been a perfect 300 game ever! I would love to see a reaction video of pro ten pinners watching our game here in New England! Watch Paul Burger's 500 series from a tv show from 1991 on KZfaq!

Hi I'm a lefty and bowl mainly straight with a slight angle I've always noticed that if I have my feet and hips pointed towards the 3pin that I naturally throw slightly left and have a little hook I've tried opening up for more of a hook and never had any luck, I've had nothing but trouble when I've tried opening up my approach and i tend to dump the ball so I've stuck with what I know and it helps and this video has helped me a but to understand the difference between stances and proper approaches.

John Dee you want line up your hip and shoulder to the target. You still walk straight but your hip and shoulder are still angled to your target. You don't want push the ball to the target that will cause your arm swing to be inconsistent. Drop the ball under your head and the ball will just follow the. path of your shoulder.

Ok. Here's how I see it... The optimal angle to get a strike is about, if my memory serves correctly, is about six degrees... But to do that throwing straight is that you would have to throw from the lane next to you about a third of the way across... But then you would have to throw over the gutters and all that so it would be nearly impossible... Plus, when you straight bowl, you risk "dead hitting" the head pin... Meaning you hit the head pin straight on... It increases the chances of leaving "splits", including the dreaded "7-10" split... With straight bowling, you throw the ball as hard and as fast as you can, causing the pins to react violently and just pray they all fall over... With "hook" bowling, it requires more finesse... Less speed and power, and more science and mathematics are involved... But hook bowling would bring better results once you get the feel for it... Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is coming from studying lots of "bowling science" over the years...

Hmm can't some how agree with straight technic ( high ball speed , less grab , Less rev ) ? ? I know for a fact this raps the corners leaving the 10 pin with a solid bowling ball being thrown. But if the ball keeps moving right I would be worried shooting straight for spares LOL. Yes adjustment is required for spare shooting we know this. I'm a straight shooter to but I find in need to pivot a little.

I've been a straight bowler my whole life, but after getting a fingertip ball back in March, I want to learn how to hook it. I only got the chance to practice one time since my local bowling alley reopened (which was about 2 weeks ago). It was frustrating because it was like I was using it for the first time. No matter how much I tried to change the way I released the ball, it just wouldn't curve. I use a wrist support because I have a weak wrist. My question is: What can I do to get better at hooking the ball? Btw, I have watched every single bowling tips video you guys have made, and they are very helpful. You make great videos that have so much great content. Keep doing what you do. You guys are the best!

I would also say that you could do the no-step approach. You line up at the foul line in your finish position, and then you swing the ball and release it. The way this helps is because it doesn't matter how many pins you knock down since all you are focusing on is your hand and release at the bottom. After you get comfortable with your hand releasing the ball the way you want to, then you can go to a one-step, to a two-step, to a normal approach.
@tarlkudrick1174
@tarlkudrick1174 3 жыл бұрын
I second the no-step approach. Also, consider trying a two-handed style. The work involved in switching may not be worth it--it isn't for me, because I'm just a recreational bowler--but it is for others.
@therayven3147
@therayven3147 2 жыл бұрын
A suggestion I would have, is try what us bowlers call "suitcasing" the ball... In other words, instead of holding the ball directly underneath the ball and turning your wrist to hook the ball, try holding the ball with your wrist in a more natural position, similar to holding a suitcase... The ball will naturally have some spin on it and it will hook... Also, try slowing down your throwing speed... You say you have been "straight bowling" your whole life, so you have gotten accustomed to throwing the ball fast and hard... Think of of the ball as a car tyre, the faster the car is traveling on a slick road, the more the car skids... But as the car slows down, or the tyres find a dry piece of road, the car straighten out... The harder you throw the ball, the more it skids, and the straighter it goes, untill it slows down or finds a dry part of the lane, then the ball will roll over and hook towards the center of the pins... Speed, angle, and oil patterns play a big part in ball shaping... Just try practicing different techniques on different oil patterns to get the best results...

Hooking the ball allows for a greater chance your ball will strike when hitting the pocket. The pocket is much smaller when looking straight on at the pins rather than looking at the pins from an angle. Watch veritassiums video on this he does a good job explaining it.

Yes, you can definitely get 200 bowling straight. I went bowling recently on my 2nd time going bowling after like 5 or 6 years, and my best was 157 bowling straight and my average was a little less than 140. I could probably hit 200 if I perfect the technique, but I mess up my throws sometimes. If you don’t miss spares, you can achieve a score of 200 with just 1 strike. The highest score you can get with no strikes is 190 assuming you make all spares.

For a straight ball, why not lay the ball down at the extreme corner of the lane and angle it diagonally toward the pocket? Brad laid it down near the center both times, which, of course, results in a less effective angle at the pocket. Wouldn't a maximum diagonal shot also allow you to ignore the different oil patterns?

I haven't bowled in years, but back in the 90s I took my Brunswick Black Beauty ball from the 70s and tried to bowl here in Florida. I had always bowled with a hook ball. Turns out that the lanes are not made of the same material and finish as they were in the 1970s and the rubber ball would just slip and slide rather than hook. I never got another ball, and I haven't bowled in 15 years.

@@swinde there is a thing called "surfacing" your ball... Meaning using a "brillo" pad or very fine sand paper to put very small, fine scratches on the ball surface... This will give the ball more traction... Think of your ball like a car tyre... A bald car tyre has no grip on a slick road, but the more tread that is on the tyre, the more grip it has... A bowling ball uses that same logic on certain oil patterns...
