If you're looking to change your run technique, this is THE video for you. Coach Nate first dives into the common misconceptions many runners have around run technique, and the mistakes they make when trying to change, i.e. focusing on our feet too much and/or changing things too fast and out of order.
Coach Nate then shares 3 powerful run drills that you can start doing today that will set you up for long-term success and improvement. Those drills include:
04:00 - heel-toe rocking to understand shifting your weight to create movement
05:20 - pulling to understand how to pick our feet up off the ground to for a quicker softer footfall, higher cadence, and more efficient running
06:25 - hopping to understand our natural elasticity and "springiness" we get when we use our feet, achilles, and calves properly.
"Now" is always a good time to make changes and improvements, but remember that your body
A) likes gradual sustained changes best over sudden rapid ones and
B) doesn't like big changes in the middle of major training cycles - say 4-6 weeks away from your next marathon.
Remember if you're looking for more help, you can sign up for a 7 day Free Trial for the Training Club - and get access to all or our run programs that include run drill progressions in addition to strength, injury prevention, and coaching support.

Nate and Holly - Years of running/walking off shin pain the first 1.5 miles, two mornings ago I *burned* through 5 miles with NO pain!! (I never raced, just ran for stress. Took up that pre-dawn run 5x/wk again a year ago, esp love winter runs. That first 20 min was *always* hell, but when the pain went away I could run forever. I started running on and off 45 years ago. More off than on. I’d run a few months, my knees would start to hurt, and I’d stop. No KZfaq back then. It’s taken me this long to learn a bit about good form. Thanks, BTW. Went for a walk/run a few days ago. Felt pretty good. My question, I wasn’t very achy the next day but what can I learn from aches? Where should I ache? Where should I not? How much should I ache?

Listen to Nate at 2:35! If you switch something up in your running form arbitrarily without fully understanding why, you WILL be trading one problem for another! I thought it was a good idea to start landing more on my forefoot. Got away with it for about 4 months without much issue. Then on a run I got tremendous pain on the inside of both feet within a mile. Ended up being some buried muscle in my calves that wrapped around my ankle into my foot. Took 7 months for me to get back to running without pain. Be smart people!

Training for my first half marathon and as soon as I went +30 miles/week, I noticed debilitating pain in my left hip. Took time off and started again pain came back after 10-15 miles/week. Took another break and now it comes back after a mile of jogging however when I do sprint training 40-100 meters, no pain and feels more natural. Any thoughts on this? Been trying hip mobilization drills and such. Any help would be amazing, thank you for all the content!!

Hi I'm about your age and just run for 2y. I have some suggestions about shin splints: 1. run on flat road. never run on uphill/downhill (you're not ready yet I assume) 2. slow down a bit. you probably run too fast. investing in some running watch is good idea or just get an an apps for smart phone (strava/sportractive etc..) 3. increase your mileage about 10% weekly Shin splints is a big problem when I start running and btw I'm your neighbor (Malaysia) haha

First video I've seen acknowledge the use of low profile shoes for training/technique and the use of more padded shoes for other runs. Do you have a breakdown on when to use each? Why wouldn't you continue with the low profiles all the time? Just finished reading "Even with your shoes on" and (spoiler), almost as an aside to not alienate any readers, she waits to advocate minimal/no shoes at the end of the book. Thoughts?

@TheRunExperience

Hey Caleb! We have a ton of runners in our Training Club who are 40, 50, 60+ and running fast and pain-free. We believe the difference is looking at your training from a broader athletic viewpoint and really focusing on strength training and mobility work along with your running, as opposed to only going after a ton of mileage each week. For example, a lot of knee pain can be fixed by strengthening your glutes and having a consistent foam rolling routine on your IT band and quads!

Congrats that's great! Even the best runners out there are thoughtful about their form and are aware of their "tells", i.e. when they get fatigued what starts to break down for them. Could be erratic breathing, or shoulders that start to shrug upwards, or an arm swing that starts to get a little stiff. Suffice to say it's rare that any of us score a "perfect" score here...but the performance mindset is to always to see what you can do better...

@sampapalapa
@sampapalapa 5 жыл бұрын
further, furthest, farther, farthest - 'All these words can be used for literal distance: farther/further down the corridor, Who can jump the farthest/furthest? Only further, not farther, can be used in the abstract sense: closed until further notice; was further annoyed by a second intrusion; and only further can be used as a verb: to further your chances. Farthest and furthest are synonyms: the subject farthest/furthest removed from my comprehension. Many careful writers choose farther and farthest for the literal sense, but it is not wrong to use further and furthest throughout.' ~ Longman Guide to English Usage

Runners have a shorter life expectancy than smokers. There are SO MANY better cardio exercises that dont destroy your body. Love your body. Its a gift. Peace
