I just ran my first 5K Sunday and had back and shoulder pain all week. I used these principals to do a mini workout on my treadmill this morning just to become more aware of running mechanics. For one, I was always running with my head bent forward to look at my feet! I corrected that and tried to loosen my shoulders a bit and hopefully I'll be back on track. Thanks Nate!

This has been the best explanation of reality of novice runner problems that I have come across in all the videos I keep watching on running better. Thank you Nathan for the beautifully explained runner form problems . I have been facing lot of problems with my running form and been trying to correct it and make changes all at once and it stresses me out completely. The result, I’ve not yet been able to have a proper running form which has caused my lower back to hurt a lot along with some 2 small injuries I suffered in the last 2 years. This year, so far so good but posture correction is an area I’m not able to achieve. You have spoken so well about the dropping of shoulders, arm swings. Hip movement and so much more which is exactly what I do 🙈

Weather is getting nicer in Boston, which has motivated me to pick up running. I have had an office job since I left high school, which was also me sitting in a desk. Today while running, my husband pointed out my incorrect foot landing and told me to change it. I tried doing it while holding my posture and breathing, but it was too much. I was ready to give up. I appreciated your message about allowing my body to get accustomed to new techniques gradually with consistency and to be real with myself that, while our bodies can be great at running, we spent most of our time not running. Your vid was mentally and emotionally helpful for me. Thanks

Love this channel. Got so much from it. Still struggling with shin splits even after more than a year. But my running technique is improving gradually. Better cadence, better stamina, not much faster (or slimmer :-( ) but I am 56. Not an excuse I know. My experience has been it’s better to change one thing at a time. Over thinking while you’re running is not conducive to good form. So this video is spot on. So thank you TRE.

Good job man, I’ve just recently realized my form was garbage. It was almost like learning how to run all over again in a way, the better my form up top forced me to use my hams and glutes in a way I have never used them in running before. I have to be honest, it felt totally unnatural at first but I noticed my speed and efficiency had improved almost immediately. My joints experienced less discomfort as well. I just wish I would have known this earlier as I’m sure I’ve done a lot of damage to my musculoskeletal system.

A question for you, Nathan: What do you think of running in various terrain vs. constant flat asphalt or track? In my experience, changes in the terrain are very helpful do develop the necessary power and coordination to maintain good form. And with that I do not only mean hills or changing underground, but also obstacles, tilted paths, stairs, branches you need to dodge, etc. If I only ran on straight asphalt all the time I would be scared of ruining my body through monotonous exercise building up and small problems growing bigger and bigger. Is that correct intuition?

Great vid. Would love to see arm movement demonstrated. What's the right amount of arm swing and why do great runners have almost no arm swing?
@TheRunExperience
@TheRunExperience 7 жыл бұрын
Hey Matt! Great question. The idea with the arm swing it to keep elbows parallel to body, so that arms don't cross in front of you as they swing, as that takes power out of your speed as your move forward. It's also important to keep the shoulders relaxed. The best runners have created enough stability and control in their core that there's hardly any swing or twist left to manage with the arms. Check out the stable arm drill here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/lbGPhpeb2MCqiZ8.html

very clear explanation. just a question. i've lost my flexiblity of shoulders and back but i love running. How could i start to begin to recover my natural running position?? Pilates? Stretching? Maybe it's a dummy question but it's difficult to start... sorry for my english.

No that's a great question! We've got some awesome mobility stuff here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kLKhh6mnqru-ooU.html&list=PLlt-HVB7j4c20vWi5-gbjyLGa10YVy_48 and kzfaq.info/sun/PLlt-HVB7j4c20vWi5-gbjyLGa10YVy_48 Also use a lacrosse ball under your shoulder blades (place the ball under the shoulder blade - one side at a time while laying down) and move arm forward and backward and then in big "snow angel" motions. Spend about 2 minutes on each side! Other than that, start including some core strength exercises to improve your form :)
