This video walks through the process of checking and adjusting your valve clearance on a classic Honda. This process should be the same for CB350-CB750
Clearance
CB350,400 = Intake .002(.05mm) Exhaust .002(.05mm)
CB500,550,750 = Intake .002(.05mm) Exhaust .003(.08mm)

You should do a video on what mechanical stuff to watch out for when, say, looking at a non-running bike for purchase, so you can know what the bike needs.

I just bought my first bike, a 1978 CB550K, cafe build. This winter I want to try my hand at pretty much tuning the entire engine from valves, ignition, cleaning/rebuilding the carbs, double checking the jetting and carb tuning, etc. Do you have a video that sort of explains what order to tune up an engine? Looks like you do have most jobs covered individually, just curious what order they should be done in! great videos and beautiful bikes!

Nice video but just FYI...those aren't Phillips screws on Honda bikes. They're what's called JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard). If you will get yourself a set of JIS screwdrivers, you will be surprised at how much easier it is to keep from stripping screws when you're working on these old Hondas.
@ClassicOctane
@ClassicOctane 8 жыл бұрын
Wow, I had no idea. I will definitely look into getting a set of those. Thanks for the tip!
@ronicard

The angle of the inflection on the 4 points of the cross are different from the JIS to the Phillips. That's why it's so easy to strip them with a Phillips. If you can also find a couple of JIS bits for your impact driver, those are handy as well for when you're trying to free up rusted screws. Really good video series and I've enjoyed it because I'm putting the finishing touches on a CB500 that I built from parts right now. I've been using your videos as reference to make sure I was doing some of it right! :P I also have an old CB750 that my youngest son restored for his senior project in high school and I have a CB550 that I will be working on next but with a modern front end off a CBR1000RR and a CBR600 rear end. That one will be my son's bike when I'm done with it. Anyway, keep up the great videos. Much appreciated.

Just be careful riding those early Brit bikes. Shift on the right and brake on the left on those. Can mess you up if you switch between those and post 1974 bikes where everything now shifts on left and brakes on the right

Your “Phillips” screws strip out easily on Japanese motorcycles because THEY ARE NOT PHILLIPS! They are JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard - NOT the same as Pozi-Drive) ! Don’t use Phillips on Japanese motorcycles! Use JIS screwdrivers! Get a GOOD set of JIS screwdrivers and you’ll be AMAZED at what you’ve been missing all your life! No more “camming out” of the screw head like a Phillips does!

A trick is to bend the feeler gauge in an angle so it doesn't hit anything else than the valve you are going to measure. Makes it easier to do a precise adjustment. Edit: And great video.

+Classic Octane nothing in particular, however, whenever you work on your project, it would be interest to have it on video. A lot of times, viewers just want to know what you working on. It doesn't have to be about fixing a particular thing. It can be like classic octane daily type of video.

I have never owned a 500 but I have had two 550's. I lean towards the 550 for the increased power. If I were to go 500 I would definitely go for the F. I love how smooth these older Honda 4 cylinders are.

Nice video! Thanks for making it. What about fixing oil leak from valve cover? My understanding is you can replace valve cover gasket but sliding it over the motor and barely lifting the valve cover, but I can't add any sealant this way. Any tips??
@Technicallity1
@Technicallity1 4 жыл бұрын
I've replace the valve cover seal on mine, it was pretty straightforward i'd try to find a new OE rubber ring if you can. The only thing to watch out for is when you go to put it back on, make sure you use rubber bands to hold up the rocker arms otherwise it'll be almost impossible to get the valvecover back on.

Yo............love the videos bruh. I have a couple of questions. I am also a newbie to the refurbishing/rebuilding/customizing/whatever you want to call it. I have a '94 CB750 Nighthawk that I want to "Cafe out". I saw your video on syncing the carbs, but do you have a video on how to clean carbs....and re-jetting carbs? Also wanted to replace the tank, and wanted to know if you know of any good slightly longer and thinner tanks that will fit on it? I know......a bit much. You seem very educated on the hondas and I have been looking for such a guy as yourself for a long time. I hope you don't mind if I drop in with questions from time to time...............to time!!! LOL
@ClassicOctane
@ClassicOctane 7 жыл бұрын
I don't have any videos on cleaning carbs but it's very straight forward. I just take them apart one at a time so that I can keep all of the pieces together and organized. You can buy carb cleaner from the parts store and also one of these amzn.to/2eJrcBU it will help you get the junk out of the jets and passageways. I don't know of any tanks that fit your bike without a good amount of custom work. Hope that help and thanks for watching.

I noticed you have pods. Was wondering if you changed jets or the air/fuel mixtures screw settings outside of the factory spec? Having a hell of a time with mine. Prev owner lost the OEM box and did pods but idle all over the place. Carb is synced and rebuilt to like knew factory. Just wondering if yours runs good, what your settings etc are at. Thanks.

Hey, love your channel. I also have a 75 CB550 that I'm working* on. I was wondering if you had any advice on repainting the frame. I don't have access to a sand blaster and getting it done professionally is too expensive. Am I better off going with aircraft paint stripper and sand paper? it just seems like it will take forever

Good video! I am a beginner about to begin a project, but I like to read reference materials and watch videos like this. Do you have any book suggestions? Anything would be great like reading the model manuals or whatever. Also, what tools would I typically need other than the basics... Thanks!
@ClassicOctane
@ClassicOctane 7 жыл бұрын
I would definitely pick up a Clymer manual for whatever bike you have. I have used that thing more times than I can count. As far as tools go, you can get by with just normal hand tools, a multimeter/test light, and wire stripers . The only special tools I really have are carb sync gauges, feeler gauges and an impact driver. If you plan on getting into some frame modification you will need a grinder and a good welder too.

I've never understood how such a small, SMALL change in the feel (emphasis on feel) guage actually makes a difference. I mean, I get how it works, but when you're using the feeler guage, I don't feel that it's actually precise, I feel like it's more your best guess. TBH, it's kind of frustrating because I can't tell if this is giving me problems or if it's something else. srsly, can you really feel the difference between .002 and .003 mm???

@ClassicOctane
@ClassicOctane 6 жыл бұрын
Try rotating it another 360 degrees. You need to make sure the cylinder is on the compression stroke. There is also the possibility they are over tightened and don't have enough clearance to move.
@007mercucio
@007mercucio 6 жыл бұрын
Okay, awesome. I will try loosening them back some. When I say they don't rattle like that, I mean, on neither side of 2-3 does it rattle when it's at the 2-3 T mark. It should do either one or the other, but not neither side. So maybe it was over tightened. I will take a fresh look at it tomorrow. Thanks!

One more thing occurred to me: The timing is not electronic, and it was set using a strobe, so the physical time of the ignition mark might be different, as it was not set the slow / stopped way. Would that change the alignment of the marker, for these purposes? Because of what the strobe told me, I set the timing ahead of where it looks like it would be set if you set it the stationary way. It only lines up when you view it via strobe light. So if I align the valves with that mark, should it be the mark as it would be when it's set as a stationary setting? Or is it okay to use that alignment mark from when it is set via strobe light? Or does that make any difference at all?

Slightly misleading info on this video....you do not set valve clearance by lining up the T2.3 mark. You line up T1.4 to get tdc on compression stroke on cyl 1 then check inlet and exhaust on cyl1, exhaust on cyl 2 and inlet on cyl 3. Then turn the crank 360 degrees back to T1.4 and check the rest of the valves i.e. inlet and exhaust on cyl 4, inlet on cyl 2 and exhaust on cyl 3. In other words you only line up the T mark twice to set all 8 valve clearances...
