I've been doing the 'turning' crochet like this for many, many years, since my Gran taught me to crochet when l was about 5!!! I'm now 56....... Agreed, it gives a lovely smooth look, much easier to find the last stitch too........xxx

fantastic! thank you for your videos. i’ve been crocheting for over 40 years and i’ve been doing this but i didn’t realize it was labeled alternative turning stitch 😅 i’m so happy because in teaching my granddaughter i can call it and now show her this video. 🎉

I'm skipping the turning chain chart on your blog and sticking with this video!! THIS IS GOLD!! No turning chains for SC or HDC, and for DC and above, turn > no chain > SC then SC in 2nd loop for DC height, then stack those alternative-type-SC's up for taller stitches (treble +)... did I sum that up correctly? THIS IS GENIUS!!

Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks?! LOL! I consider myself an experienced crocheter and I have tried many techniques for this but most were too fiddly or hard to do. Finally a method that is both easy and effective! I also watched your videos on the sc straight edge (again who would have guessed!), the cables (I always hated how they puckered! Never occurred to me to use TC instead!), and the brim for a top down beanie! I could never figure out how to “attach” to do the next row. Now I know! I will definitely be watching and referring to your videos in the future. Thank you for showing and explaining in a very easy to follow and clear manner!

OMG I wish I found this video a decade ago when I first began crocheting! For years I complained about the gaps created by the traditional turning chain method (which, I had only ever seen the second example you showed; I had never seen the first method, which... yikes that’s ugly lol). But now I finally found a way to turn my work that keeps my edges straight and tight. Thanks so much for this! :)

Superb. So in effect, instead of the chain that's equivalent to a double, you're simply stacking two singles, one atop the other, and it looks SO much neater. Thanks!

This kept the sides nice and even, with no gaps, so joining with slips was rather smooth.

Genius!!! 🏆 Thank you, to the moon and back!! ❤ The bulkiness or gap when turning, has just vexed me to no end. It's ugly, obvious, and disappointing to see, when I finish a project. You are a crochet angel! 😇

Hola Nicki. Sometimes I use the alternative turning chain. Other times I do the turning chain of two and then I create the double crochet. At the end of the row, I do the double crochet two together this way both sizes look even

This is sooo much better than chains! Thank you ❤ Used this in the pattern I'm making and it looks perfect. The part I'm doing at the moment is in rounds with turning after each round and I'm using the same atc method. Is this the best way in rounds or is there another way of joining and turning? 🤔

Love this and can't wait to try it! One thing I am unclear on: When doing the initial chain for a ripple ripple pattern how many chains (if any?) would be eliminated? Would it be all of the 'plus ones'? For example if the chain is "multiple of 14 plus 3" would you add only one (since the stitch will be stacked singles)?

Hello!!!! Really loved this tip. So helpful and looks so neat. Does this turning technique avoid adding extra stitches in a pattern? Have seen patterns that say “multiples f 4 +3”. Thank you!!!

I would guess you don't have to think +3 if you do a foundation chain in the beginning instead of just chains. After the foundation chain you don't have to think about +3 anymore 😊

How do you make an alternative double croche decrease?
@NickisHomemadeCrafts

You would stop at the single crochet level and then do a half finished stitch for the next stitch. Then you have 3 loops on your hook, yarn over and pull through all
