The problem in defending headlock, at least watching children arguing out of the school, is when the headlocker do it with the intention of taking down the other guy. If the posture is compromised, by an ambush attack or because the headlocker is much bigger, is very difficult to defend. You have to go to the ground and defend from there.
@zube410
@zube410 3 жыл бұрын
I think that's one of the big reasons why there are so many headlock defenses in jujitsu. Not only is it something that's pretty easy to defeat if you have the technical knowledge to do it, but it is also a much better option for someone who has a huge weight advantage than for someone who doesn't. This means that most of the time if you're in the traditional jujitsu assumed scenario where you're fighting someone who can outmuscle you if you're not technical enough, then the headlock seems like a good option for them, comes up quite often, and can often lead to you being taken down. With the amount of practice that you get in most jujitsu classes, however, being taken down while the other guy has you in a headlock is a lot better than a lot of your other options and actually leaves you in a decent position with a good plan for how to deal with it most of the time.

I've been doing jiu jitsu for two weeks, practicing at a Gracie University Certified Training Center and we've already done so many headlock escapes. The takedown at 3:59? That was literally the second thing I learned. Everything after that I've already learned too. Which is wild. I've taken 7 classes. How much can you learn in 7 classes? Apparently a decent amount.

I had a friend, well "friend", who was a huge douche who couldn't fight. He got suplexed on concrete because he wouldn't let go of a headlock, thankfully I didn't watch a man die only break his shoulder in 2 places, get the wind knocked out of him and slip a disk. He refused to let go because he had "better position".

@Paul Singer which guy?
@zube410
@zube410 3 жыл бұрын
@Paul Singer so, that first reply from knight jiu-jitsu is the other guy in this video. Also, Mike doesn't claim to be an expert, in fact he claims specifically not to be an expert repeatedly in this video. I just expected that as a non-expert he wouldn't be nearly as familiar with the exceptions where headlocks could be a good idea {period} there are some specifically trained headlocks that are a great idea {comma} but the normal instinctual headlock tends to be a bad idea {period} there are some exceptions to that one as well, but they are few and far between. In a general sense, telling people to stop doing headlocks is probably good fighting advice the majority of the time. you are likely correct about the people he hasn't trained with and about some of the places where headlocks can be a really good idea, but for the most part anyone fighting Josh Barnett and getting advice from these videos is just going to get beat up. On the other hand, almost anyone just watching this videos would lose a fight to Mike as well. Most of us don't train nearly enough to be competition for mike, let alone competition for the many many people who are better than him in a fight.
@pryoslice

You're not likely to get to a bulldog choke from a headlock unless the guy turns away from you for some strange reason. If you're thinking of the Ben askren fight , you'll notice he gets to the choke from a rear-naked position.

The head control on the way to getting the headlock gives you tons of options: throw, take the back, hold and knee. Then you get the headlock and kind of end up with nothing. Like so many other positions, our instincts are good for the first step but the "default" things that happen when you don't know what to do with the advantage you've gained suck.

I've accidentally done it while rolling. I typically know right away "oh shit, I dont want this." But sometimes it's hard to let go, or in one case that happened, I rolled with a guy less experienced than me, and he shockingly managed to get a spinal twist because I had that shitty headlock. Headlocks are awesome! I love it when someone tries to get me in one. I am seriously getting chub thinking about it. The openings they are giving you are amazing. My personal favorite response involves a fall with my elbow in their floating ribs. They cushion me, and I drive 230lbs of gravity reinforced, very directed energy into a weak spot in their ribcage. It is just so funny watching them try to breath afterwards.
