Why should you choose a telephone or video hearing for your Social Security disability case rather than an in-person hearing?

Most Social Security disability hearings are now held virtually - by telephone or by video conferencing. But you now have the option of CHOOSING an in-person hearing with a judge.
Are there any advantages to choosing an in-person hearing, or should you choose a phone or video hearing?
In my experience virtual hearings offer many advantages - for all parties - over in-person hearings.
Judges prefer phone or video hearings because they run on time, they do not put the judge in a room full of people who may be coughing or sneezing or ill, and because the judge will be in a comfortable, secure location.
You are also more likely to get a FASTER hearing date since hearing offices now schedule virtual hearings by default and only offer live hearings a few days per month.
From the perspective of a disability claimant, you avoid the hassle of a long drive to a hearing office, transportation costs (parking in many downtown areas can be $15 or $20) and you will almost certainly be more relaxed and focused discussing your case from home rather than a courtroom.
Further, the disability judge is NOT going to approve or deny your case based on how you look on the day of your hearing, so appearing in person does does not benefit you in that regard.
Finally, your choice of representatives is much greater when you choose a virtual hearing. Because Social Security is a federal administrative agency, I can represent a client in any state because I am authorized to practice law in federal courts.
If you are extremely uncomfortable speaking on the phone, or if you feel that you want to be in the same room as your judge, choose an in-person hearing.
But unless there is a compelling reason to do so, a virtual hearing is likely your best choice.
