This was exactly the video I needed to see right now. I’ve put on a decent amount of muscle and all my lifts are going up consistently but I was starting to feel fat and almost started a diet

Yup. Starting Strength is the shit. In my 50s, I've been lifting since the early 80s, reading Flex, M&F, etc. Believe me I've tried every program out there (anybody remember Cybergenics? There's a blast from the past...). High volume, low volume, HIT, Mike Mentzer's Heavy Duty (the only other program I gained muscle on, but nothing like SS). You name it. Finally, in my late 40s/early 50s even I gained TONS of muscle, gained next to nothing on almost all of those. And, turns out it was the eating specifically where I was going wrong. I wasn't eating enough. Not enough calories, not enough protein. I love Starting Strength.

Yes, I remember Cybergenics. When I started working out the first time years ago my dad recommended it. I remember it was insane, I couldn't do it.

Funny, I'm finally gaining in my late 40s also because I figured out how to eat more. I follow a higher rep program more aligned to Dr Mike but like to hear everyone's point of view.

Right… so if it’s the diet, why are you crediting SS as the reason?

When you talk about a guy like me who is 59 and you say, "understand who you are," I think you need to be careful because most of us don't actually know who were are in terms of being able to get jacked and strong. Just like your cousin, last December I started to cut after hitting a Deadlift PR of 200k. The major difference is that for me at my age it took over two and a half years to reach that point instead of nine months. AND I also added some additional fat in the process. For me, it's been LOMAD for the combined reason of milk being sold by the liter here in Japan where I live, and the fact that my age dictates a more modest surplus given the reality of the rate of gains that can be made.

Why do people sacrifice their overall performance for aesthetics? Especially as a fighter. What's the benefit of aesthetics?

Aesthetics = health at least until 10-15% body fat. Being fat is catastrophic for health, especially in the long term, so you don't wanna stay fat and strong(er) for long periods of time.
@dafunkmonster
@dafunkmonster 9 ай бұрын
@@senzatieee 20% bodyfat is not catastrophic for health, especially if you're deadlifting 500. In fact, the sweet spot for minimizing mortality if you're over 65 is somewhere in the 20-25% bodyfat range. Because fat keeps you alive when you get hospitalized. Skinny 80 year olds die quick. Obese 80 year olds (40% bodyfat) die quick. 80 year olds with 20% bodyfat who are squatting more than their bodyweight don't die quick. 10% bodyfat is unhealthy. Maintaining that requires mild starvation.

How does volumes look on a cut?
@PlaciSantos
@PlaciSantos Жыл бұрын
totally depends on the lift and on the stage of the cut, impossible to completely spell it out here in the comments section. but just as an example for squats i went from doing a 5x5 during the bulk to an 'ascending sets of 5' type of template where we'd go from very light sets of 5 all the way up to a moderately hard (what was in bulk) set of 5 and then finished me off with a AMRAP (for lack of a better acronym) set of squats a moderately easy weight.

I'd say some isolation and hypertrophy work would help too. We should also keep in mind not everyone comes from an athletic background.

Isolation and hypertrophy come much much later in your training career. If you can easily add 30-50 lbs of bodyweight and are still a novice and can get stronger every 2/3 days, that's the fastest way to add muscle mass

This doesn’t have to do with the video but I do have a question. I workout in a basement with low ceilings, is doing the overhead press seated not as good as standing? Doing it standing it hit the ceiling. Thank you.
@24Ruiner
@24Ruiner Жыл бұрын
I have the exact same issue. I take an old squat stand and use it outdoors to do OH PRESS (or you can clean it from the ground outside, though you would likely have to take a few pounds off the bar to do so.)
@PlaciSantos
@PlaciSantos Жыл бұрын
seated over head press will incorporate less muscle mass into the lift and ultimately will not allow you to press as much weight leading to less gains. but seated is better than nothing.
