The Pull-Up exercise is a gateway, to so many other Calisthenics exercises, and ultimately a stronger you. So if you need help in getting started this video is for you. I’m 59 and I do pull-ups most days of the week, and they have transformed my physique physically and mentally. Love them.
Follow along with this tutorial, and move through the progressions to get your first pull-up.
I will reply to every comment, so please let me know how you get on and if you find this video useful. I have tried to keep it simple.

I swear I was only 30-something years old last year, but then I blinked and suddenly I'm 56. How did THAT happen? 🤔 In any case, although I'm perfectly able-bodied, I recently realized that I have lost an alarming amount of physical strength as I've gotten older. I now find that I can't do a single pull-up, and in fact can BARELY manage a single push-up! How ridiculous I feel to have allowed myself to get so weak and out of shape! Fortunately, the situation is completely fixable. I just need to get off my bum and start exercising again. After seeing loads of videos by ripped, muscular 20-year olds, I admit I was feeling a little discouraged (comparison really IS the thief of joy!), but seeing your video helped motivate me when the other videos didn't. You, good sir, are an inspiration. You've certainly inspired me, at any rate. Thanks for all you do! Keep up the excellent work! 💪🙂

Your videos are really encouraging, no pretence. I’ve just got some bands; I’d started doing some dumbbell work most days , thinking that would strengthen me for pull-ups. No!! I feel worse when I got back to them. I’m going to do pull-ups as my main thing, using the bands, then doing the dumbbells secondarily. I’d love to do muscle-ups. Keep doing the videos, please. Bill.

I’m 65 and I can now do 11 pull-ups without resistance bands and/or kipping. This spring I’m installing an outdoor muscle up bar to start working on my muscle-ups. I do 2 min daily dead-hangs too and whew, it is painful as a Mo#h^* Fu*^*# 😂.

You answered my question about buying less bands and doubling them up. 👍🏻 I won’t be “stacking” them. I’m 63 200 pounds fairly fit and can’t pull up. Been trying reverse pull ups but not progressing very well. What is an approximate band to start before I spend money on bands I won’t use. Here are the maximum two sizes in I can get in a kit. 50-125 pound OR 35-85 pound Is 35 / 85 a decent assist or do you think 50/125 to start? Thanks for the informative KZfaq channel.

Thank you very much; I am 60, wanted to start pull ups but have no pull up bars withing a five mile radius at any school or park, so I ordered a pull up tower from Amazon. I currently have spent two weeks practicing hanging for a few seconds at a time as I can not yet pull myself up. My assistance bands and a set of calisthenics rings have arrived to start the real work of beginning progressions to build up to an unassisted pull up. Thank you for the motivation and instruction.

I’ve recently purchased some rings and been watching instructional videos and yours are the only ones I found that shows band use to start with your progressions. I’ve used progressions overload weightlifting for years so this was helpful. I already have bands and started using them and you now have a new subscriber. Thank you for your videos.

I tried getting good at pull ups about a year ago, could never get past five reps, could add more sets of five, but never got that sixth rep. Think I’m gonna give it another go and incorporate the bands this time.

Hi Antony, thanks for the video. I'm using the same method to get to unassisted pull ups and would add:- .Be patient , its taken me five months to progress from green to black band. .Always do a warm up set or two with your heaviest band before working sets. I had bad elbow tendonitis and this will reduce the risk. .Experiment with hand positions, I find parallel grip or chin ups kinder to elbows. .For me a rep rang of 6 to 12 before progressing seems to work best, progressing to a lighter band once I can do several sets of 12 good reps. .I aim for.a bit more volume of around 40 reps per session .I'm quite long limbed so my mechanics are not the best for pullups and chin ups. .If you are a bit tubby loosing a few lbs does make a difference. I hope that helps 👍💪

Anthony, sthsnks for this. There are sooo many nad reviews abiut dursbility and wuakity of bands. Which onws have kasted yiu a long time? - months/yesrs. Or is that question even possible to ask? As most reviews say rhey crack, snap and don't wben last a month of daily work outs. They even say rhat rhe inkong of the name still looks in mint condition whwn rhe bands give way.

What I find annoying is the sizes of some bars. Some are wider and it costs me more effort in getting a good firm grip. Love your videos and especially the fact you are over fifty just like me. It shows age is not an excuse.

Any tips for ring pull ups? I can do one, and barely, and struggle on how to do more. Negatives? Jump up and hang still? Will that build strength for more? And does bands work equally well as help with ring pull ups? Yes, many questions... 🙃

Hi mate, would you say it's true that a person should be able to do 15 dead hang pull ups before they attempt a muscle up and if they can't do 15 dead hang pull ups, it's unlikely they will be able to do a muscle up?
@funwithcalisthenics
@funwithcalisthenics 4 ай бұрын
It is often said that you need 15 good form pull-ups.. but, when I got my first one, all I could manage was 14 pull-ups with terrible form. I have a video which shows my journey to my first muscle up.. made it 4 years ago. The pull-ups in that video are embarrassingly bad.
@totallyraw1313
@totallyraw1313 4 ай бұрын
Cheers mate. Do you think one should try to achieve 15 strict pull ups before adding additional load for lower reps?
@funwithcalisthenics
@funwithcalisthenics 4 ай бұрын
I’ve read different opinions about this. Some day, start adding weight as soon as you can, ie as early as 5 strict pull-ups. However I disagree with this, as in your early days, your joints and tendons, are still getting used to this exercise. So in my opinion adding weight too early is more likely to cause an injury. So waiting until you get to 15 good firm pull-ups, is probably a wise decision.
