It's that time of year when the grocery stores are full of holiday cactus. Here's what you need to know to prevent yours from dropping it's buds the moment you get it home. They do and I explain why. Also, if you're curious how to get yours to bloom the lazy way, I got the the hot tip on that too, especially if you live in a cold climate.
My name is Heather and I garden in the southwest suburbs of Chicago on a small residential lot. My garden lives a whole lot larger than it is and I love sharing tips and tricks, as well as plenty of mistakes, with others who love to play in the dirt.

What a gorgeous flowering cactus!Thank you so much for your wonderful information. Turns out I bought two at the same time and one is a Thanksgiving cactus, the other a Christmas cactus. The Thanksgiving one never bloomed, rather the tips of the leaves are a reddish color, no bloom, the Christmas one appears to have little buds at the end of the leaves sprouting. Keeping my fingers crossed. I live in Florida so I keep mine inside facing a window with indirect bright but low light. My patio is way too hot and sunny. Im covering them at night for now, but I'm going to follow your advice. Will keep you posted. Temperature here is 65 degrees at night. I have been seeking advice online for this type of plant, and by far you are the best! Thank you so much!

It's so funny. It's like you were telling the story of my Thanksgiving cactus! Bought it last year at the grocery store. Buds fell off. This year put it outside on the covered porch all summer. Fed it. Even before I brought it inside it was already forming little flower buds. Mine are white. Brought it inside before the nights dipped down. Today is Halloween and it's in full bloom. It bloomed naturally. Like you said I don't care when it blooms -- just so it blooms! Thank you for the video.

Lovely plant!! I’m going to try this ASAP. My son planted an orange seed from his lunch 10 years ago and we have a beautiful tree in our living room. It totally thrives outside during summer then I have to bring it in for winter and hold my breath as the leaves start to fall. This winter I started spritzing it with water. That seems to help a bit. But I could really use some great advice on how to keep this happy inside.

Wow!! I’d say you’re doing better than you think. Keeping a citrus plant going for 10 years is something to be proud of! Most plants lose their leaves as a response to lack of light, especially when they spend months outside. They go from ideal light conditions to anything but indoors. Give it your brightest window in the winter, some humidity and hope for the best.

Hi Val! What color are your flowers? I still water it from the top, the tray of pebbles and water is just to provide humidity and prevent the buds from falling off as a result of the dry air. I tend to let the soil dry out pretty well before I water any of my houseplants. That way I avoid overwatering and killing them. Good luck and thanks so much for watching!

Thanks so much for this!! I’ve honestly gone through SO MANY Christmas Cactus care vids and shorts (like 20-30 vids lol) and yours has been by far the most informative and clear! I’ve subscribed :) May I just ask for some advice? My Thanksgiving cactus (correct ID thanks to this vid) was budding beautifully in one spot, which I moved it from due to needing the space for propagating plants. Now some of the huge flowers have bloomed but they’re wilting and very weak only a week or two after blooming? I moved it again into a much brighter spot thinking the flowers needed the light as they were getting so weak. Should I put it back in the original spot I had it when it started budding? Thank you ❤
@heatherhereshegrows
@heatherhereshegrows Жыл бұрын
Hi Daisy! Unfortunately, the flowers don’t last as long as we’d like and if they’re looking gorgeous for a week and then wither, I’d say that’s pretty good. I’d just avoid direct sun in the plant while in flower. A bright window with indirect light should be ok.

Hi, I have two holiday cactus planters in my garden. I got them in October of 2020 and they're still blooming. Not sure why they call them holiday cactus. I'm a new gardener. I started in May of 2020. I have a lot to learn. I watched the video you did for Erin (Impatient Gardener) and I'm going to try and grow a fig tree. I love figs. I don't think I'll need to move it in and out of a garage since I live in Los Angeles.
@heatherhereshegrows

Hello! Wow, blooming since October? I wish mine did! Holiday cactus is the catch-all term for the three cactuses - Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. The fig is an e cells that plant for beginners. It’s easy and very forgiving. I’m doing an update on my channel this weekend on Spring fig care if you’re interested. You shouldn’t have to bring your fig indoors for winter, matter of fact, you might consider just planting it in the ground to eliminate that step altogether. I’m all about less work! Happy gardening and please don’t hesitate to reach out with questions!

I have one on a bright shady balcony and it blooms like nuts in winter (though it only gets down to 10 celcius - 58 F here). I think they just like to be left alone, though obviously people in cold climates have to bring them inside, and that can cause problems.

Hi, I'm Trish from South Africa... when transplanting and you put 2 colours in a pot... like a pink and a white, do they cross pollinate, so that the white takes on some of the pink colour? Thanks
@heatherhereshegrows
@heatherhereshegrows 2 жыл бұрын
Good question! For that to happen, pollen would have to be moved by pollinators from the male part of a plant to the female part of another. I grow mine as a houseplant, keeping it outside during the summer and then bringing it inside in the fall where it flowers sometime in early November. I think this would be an ideal situation to grow two varieties together as it eliminates the possibility of pollinators mixing the two.

@heatherhereshegrows
@heatherhereshegrows Жыл бұрын
I’m not sure how much of a temp change you have from day to night but it’s probably more than it is in the summer months. Also, zygocactus are short-day plants and form flower buds when day length is less than 12 hours. So the combo of cooler nights and shorter days may be just what you need to get your plant flowering. Do keep me posted! I’d love to know how it goes for you in Florida.
