12V override switch = 2 position (on/on) with three terminals on the back. One for the incoming signal, and two terminals for the outgoing signal, depending on which way the toggle is flipped.
In this video I use a 3 position switch, but it was all I could get at the time. The two position switch I show for the high beam/low beam setup in this video is the ideal switch for this fan override application.
The car is a 1966 Mustang Fastback with a 347 Stroker and T5 transmission.

Looks good Andy; same reason planes have redundant systems, you never know when something may stop working. I like the plates you had made up, much cleaner than some of my "handy work" in the past. 😅

Yeah, I wanted to do this when I installed the fans, but we’re here now. 🙂

Cool idea to add something to give a little more control over the cooling system. I do like the idea of a little extra cooling if you go to the track with the engine off if necessary.

Yeah, that’s another good reason to add to the list for something like this. 🙂

Great video. I ran two over ride switches, and two relay’s so the fans run independently. I pig tailed them to the temp sensor so they both get the signal. One for each fan in case one fan died. And i hid them inside the center console roll up door.

Looks awesome I did the same thing for my electric fan but I used one of the holes under the dash so it was out of sight just had to enlarge it a little and I used the exact same switch lol.

I thought about that, but I wanted to know which position the switch is in with those labels. Harder to do under the dash. 🙂

Curious if this is an option for my 65 with the Holley Sniper? I can set via the system the tun on/off temps but wonder if they have an ON option? I assume if the relay or something went bad it would prevent this from working even if it did have an ON switch? Could I follow the same steps you did with the Sniper installed? Thanks!

Dont use pipe tape, use thread sealant so you still have a good ground & seal on that coolant sensor to your engine 👌

In this case, all you needed to do is connect a dash toggle SPST to ground on one side and tap the other side directly to terminal #85. This gives you control to run the fan at anytime and if you want it auto, just leave the switch off and the temp sender will do its job (it doesn't care if its gound override or not). The swith you're using SPDT is two completely different controls. You just have to remember to keep it off the "middle" position, that would be bad.

I would think you could, your just interrupting the wire from the temp sensor to the Holley. The switch would either ground out and trigger the fans, or it would be in “auto” and let the Holley decide when to trigger the fan (which is based off the temp sensor hitting its limit and grounding). 😁

Which radiator and fan system is that? Looks very clean.

It's a Champion Radiator and an electric fan system from a 1999 Ford Contour (incredibly common swap). I have videos on both of these upgrades. :)

Im attempting to do this setup its a great idea to have capability to turn off, on, and auto. I am using one of those wire controllers that have the adjustable temp knob. It has two terminals that close when a temp is reached. Do you know if your setup would still work? I'm kind of new to wiring and im starting to mock it all up outside. Thanks!

It should work as what I am doing here is just interrupting the ground for the relay circuit. I can toggle it one way and it completes the ground (ignoring the temp switch, which is just a ground too) and fires up the fans. I toggle it the other way and it's in 'auto', allowing the temp switch to do its thing and fire up the fans when the desired temp is reached. :)

Hey Andy, have you noticed that when the fan does come on when the engine is hot that it does not go off? i have the same setup and my head scratcher is that the placement of the temp switch is right where the coolant comes out the motor. so when the engine is hot, the hot coolant has the switch always activated as the thermostat is always opening even slightly from being hot. wouldnt a better placement be somewhere on the rad indirect of the fan or maybe the drain plug?

I do not have that issue, the fan shuts off when the “low temp” is reached on my thermostat electric switch. While that switch is on the backside of the thermostat and it’s reading the temp of the coolant between the Rad and the engine, it’s proximity to the hot engine coolant is close enough that it’s probably within a few degrees of the “real” engine temp. Plus, they wouldn’t design those thermostat housings to place a switch there if it wasn’t good enough for most applications. However, you are correct, there are better places to put that switch where it will read more accurately, but in my application I’m not worried about a 5 degree temp difference on a bad day. It almost sounds like there’s an issue with your cooling system if the engine is constant reading at a high temp. Possibly the Rad needs replaced, or the fan(s) are not moving enough air, or a fan shroud needs to be added, etc. I have done essentially the same mod on two Mustangs now with the same results, so that’s why I’m leaning towards there’s some going on with your system. Also, your temp switch may be fault or the trigger temp is too low? Good luck!!

I had to go back to a Mechanical fan and put a single electric in front of the radiator between the grill set to come on @190° as a fail safe. What does your mustang typically run at on a hot day?

I have the opposite issue... fan stays on WAY after the radiator is cold, because the block sensor is still warm... kills the battery... but I do need a kill switch... just pulling the wire is getting old.

You should be able to wire it so it’s only active when the car is on. 🙂

Andy, ive been folowing for quiet some time now. And your cars, and your videos are getting better all the time. Your engine bay now looks really good. But i got to be honest, that braided fuel line looks out of place. It needs rerouted somehow. It just dont look right the way it is. Maybe behind the distributor? Or at least attached to something so its not just flopping in the breeze. I know your very tidy like i am. Thats why i bring it up. Sooner or later, it will bother you.
