G'day Guys and Gals!
In this video I show you all of the steps necessary to install a Harrop E-locker into the rear diff of your Isuzu Mu-x.
The Harrop E-locker is an Electronically activated differential lock which is controlled by the use of an Electromagnetic engagement mechanism.
I first begin by installing the wiring harness to the vehicle, then I remove the rear axles and tail shaft and remove the diff center. I use special tools to carry out the assembly of the new rear differential center and fit it back to the vehicle.
I have fitted every modification to the MU-X myself and really enjoy filming and teaching you guys how to do the same to your own 4x4 vehicles. The modifications I have done are listed below -
-AFN Bull Bar
-AFN 9" LED Spotlights
-Domin8r Extreme 12000IB winch
-AUXBEAM S3 LED Foglights
-Oricom DTX4200 UHF Radio with Town and country Aerial Kit 3dbi + 6.5dbi
-Atturo Trailblade M/T - 265/70r17
-Fuel Vector - Fuel off-road racing rims - 17x8.5 Pos 7.4mm offset
-Outback Armour Expedition H/D Lift Kit
-ECU Shop Super 4 Touch Tuning Module
-HIKEITX9 Throttle Controller
-SCF Flat step rock sliders with checker plate - Satin Black
-Genuine Towbar
-Full size 265/70r17 A/T spare on steel rim
-Custom rear draw setup
-CF50 Waeco Fridge
-Giant 85AH AGM secondary battery
-Redarc BCDC1225D Smart Charger
-TITAN 900mm Single draw
-Genuine ISUZU Floormats
-ILANA Neoprene Seat covers
-Dashmat
-Provent 200 Catch can kit from Western Filters
-Diff, Transfer, Gearbox Breathers
-LED interior light upgrades
-LED reverse light upgrade
-Engine bay HPD Bling Parts
-All Terrain Industries Hard Intercooler Piping Kit
-Harrop Rear E-Locker

Thank you. I fitted an elocker to my 17 dmax and found your video informative. I trashed the bearings getting them off with a puller, so your bearing kit suggestion was a good one. My only criticism was you sort of skipped how the tabs go. Also note, the dmax has drum brakes, which if your careful you can avoid removing, but you will need to stretch the lines straight. Great video Nick. I'm getting an E-Locker for my Dmax soon. Quick question, I sometimes get bogged on the beach retrieving the Jetski, so hopefully a locker will help. When engaging the locker, is it best/necessary to switch off traction control too? Thanks Dave
@LowRangeNick
@LowRangeNick 3 жыл бұрын
Hi David, it isn't necessary to turn off traction control when using the locker . The vehicle just monitors the wheel speed via the abs wheel speed sensors. With the locker engaged there will be no difference in wheel speed between the rear wheels so it shouldn't activate. If you are driving on the beach however I would recommend to always have traction controll turned off completely.

Hey mate. I fitted the same elocker to my dmax about 2 years ago. Followed all the instructions and checked that everything was within spec. Worked well for the first month or 2 then developed a faint whine that would go away once I took my foot off the accelerator. Backlash was all within spec and even checked the gear pattern by painting the gears. Whine got too noisy so I have swapped the whole diff out for a spare LSD until I can have the locker looked at. Just wondering if you had any issues or know what the issue could be?
@LowRangeNick
@LowRangeNick Жыл бұрын
It sounds like the ring and pinion gear meshing hasn't been setup correctly. If the vehicle has high kms it could also be related to worn crown wheel and pinion or bearings. Probably best to get a diff specialist to check that it is all setup correctly and that the gears and bearings are in good condition. Mine has been going great with no issues.

Nick. Any reason you went with a rear locker rather than a front locker? For me, particularly with IFS vehicles you tend to lose front traction first so my thoughts are front locker over rear.
@LowRangeNick
@LowRangeNick 3 жыл бұрын
Firstly, a front locker will always get you further off-road. I have had a twin locked 80 series and a front locked suzuki jimny and the front locker was great! In saying that, an ifs vehicle has alot of easily damaged components in the front, tie rods, cvs, rack ends etc. The diff is also alot weaker being an alloy housing. The rear locker will get you through 90% of the tracks and the front locker will usually get you through the really difficult stuff the other 10%. The reason I went rear locker is, stronger diff assembly in the rear, less components to break when under stress, easier locker to fit and also the rear locker can be used alot more than a front. The front can make turning difficult etc.

What happens with the ABS and traction control function?, aren't both supposed to de- activate when E- Locker is engaged?

Nothing will happen with the system when the locker is engaged because there will be no wheel sleep registered on the axle with the locker. So the traction control won't activate on that axle.

When engaging the diff lock, all ESC and traction controls must be off?
@anthonyramdin1037
@anthonyramdin1037 3 жыл бұрын
If your vehicle comes with a diff lock, traction control and esc generally are turned off when the locker is engaged because tc and esc apply brakes to the wheels slipping so as to get traction to the other wheels and this is no longer needed with the locker engaged. With an after market locker, you will have to manually switch off tc and esc unless you set the ecu to do that but then again you generally use the locker in low range and tc and esc generally switches off automatically. All depends on your vehicle. Triton for example, you can use tc in low range but it switches off when you use rear locker.

@LowRangeNick
@LowRangeNick 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Aaron! You probably could find a wire on the selector with a test light and wire a relay to it which would supply power to the e locker harness when i 4lo. An easier way to do it may be to just wire in a hidden micro isolator switch on the e locker harness. Run the e locker switch earth or power through a secondary isolator switch so you can flick it on when you need it. Or you could just pull the fuse out of the harness and refit it when you go 4wdriving.

You shouldn't notice it in offroad situations. If you see the ramp on the secondary plate in my video. Also automatic vehicles with hill start assist dont roll back at all.

Hey nick, what is the difference between e-lockers and air lockers? What are the pros and cons? Thanks 😃
@LowRangeNick
@LowRangeNick 3 жыл бұрын
I have had both, i had twin Arb airlockers in my 80 series and an air locker in my suzuki jimny. The air lockers require the use of an air compressor and run air lines to the diff. This means that inside the diff lock there is compressed air which engages and disengages the locker. The common issues with air lockers are leaking seals or fittings inside the diff and also leaking lines. The E locker, as you can see from the video runs only electrical wiring to the back of the vehicle and doesn't require any additional parts , like an air compressor to run the locker. The only con with the e locker is there is a 1/8 turn of the wheel engagement time when going from reverse to drive or drive to reverse. @@LowRangeNick thanks man, so basically air lockers cost more to maintain and implement. And when it comes to repairs, it really is costly especially when you're finding a leak🤣. Good thing that we have an e-locker option at our mu-x's

Looks like heaps of play between the two wheels when the locker is engaged. Is that normal?
@LowRangeNick
@LowRangeNick 3 жыл бұрын
When engaged there is no play between the two wheels? When swapping from forward to reverse or reverse to forward motion there is an engagement time of 1/8 turn as the locking ring disengages and engages again.

I noticed it says 4.1 ratio, I thought the stock diffs were 3.7 ratio, or have you changed them?

I would say yes - factory parts wouldn't have the handwritten white lettering on them.

I havnt changed the diff ratios. It's just whats on the box. You swap the ring gear and the pinion stays in the diff so the ratio doesnt change 👍

It would have been great to see you set backlash when it was wrong. Is there a video someone can link me to for this?
@LowRangeNick
@LowRangeNick 3 жыл бұрын
The backlash needs to be adjusted by changing the thickness of the shims in behind the carrier bearings. If it is incorrect you either need a thicker shim or more shims or to remove a shim if it's too tight.

@@LowRangeNick was just looking at how to setup back lash for our diffs and its a very easy setup and yes that's correct. Does the pinion gear have a tension setting?

@@shanepascoe1078 It will have a tension setting. If installing a locker its not necessary to touch the pinion.

It could be warped brake rotors, loose wheel bearings or failed suspension and steering components.

When u spun the wheel in reverse the opposite wheel spun forward for a second, why is that?
@BenMitro
@BenMitro 3 жыл бұрын
Until the locker engaged, it was in open diff mode which has exactly that effect. A moment later, the diff lock engaged and they spun the same way. The electromagnet energises the locking mechanism, it is not the locking mechanism. Hope that helps.
