Just did this install. I have aftermarket solid rearsets which made the job easier. I used car jack stands on each peg. I did not have to remove the side stand however. I just loosened all bolts and nuts and lowered the swing arm all the way down then maneuvered the shock and pulled it out to the top. Then removed the linkage assembly and cleaned/relubed. Use box wrenches for the tight spots and extensions for ratchets and another ratchet on the other side to hold the bolt. Took me 30 minutes. Great video.

Great video, thank you for sharing. I held my breath in suspense as you lowered the bike on the peg stands. From angle of camera it looks like they're barely touching frame. I need to do this on my S1000RR.

100% stable. The OEM fold up pegs do not work as well as a pair with fixed pegs do for sure. Remember the bike is also held by the wheel chock on the table which means only one of the jack stands needs to support the rear. - Brian Van

I'm thinking about upgrading my 2016 R1 rear shock to the Ohlins. I don't ride track, would I see a good difference with the Ohlins over stock, or is it really not going to make a noticeable difference for strong street riding? Is my money best spent else where?

Did you end up ever doing the 30 mil cartridge kit? What are your thoughts on how the stock forks felt after you upgraded the shock? I'm planning on upgrading the suspension this winter, and am trying to decide on getting the shock now or wait until I can get the forks and shock at the same time.

I did finally do the forks a couple months back before heading to Barber. Before that it was the stock fork and the Ohlins rear shock for near three seasons. I did my best times on this bike with the stock fork overall and never really felt like it held me back. I am sure I would go better with the fork kit installed if I were to ride the bike again in 2018 (selling it now). The Barber trip was the last of the season for 2017 and I intended to sell the bike after returning home. I was holding on to this thing for dear life every lap as it had never been down and I wanted to keep that streak alive. - Brian Van

What tool are you using to extract that inner collar on the rear linkage (final step of disassembly)? Mine is seized in there
@sportbiketrackgear
@sportbiketrackgear 11 ай бұрын
If the inner race for the rear shock linkage is seized that will need to be fixed before you install the shock. There are needle bearings on both sides of the inner race. If this is not moving freely your rear suspension will not function properly. - Van

I can't believe Ohlins put the clickers where they did. Looks like a major PITA to adjust the shock from here. With the ABS in place, it looks nearly impossible to access. If the shock is still configured like that, I may have to look at other options...

Hello everyone, I just installed the Ohlin's TTX shock on my 2015 R1. I did the installation in my garage using a 1/4" rope and block and tackle to suspend the rear of the bike. The block and tackle kit which I used is designed to hoist game animals for the purpose of dressing, and it's sold at Harbor Freight as well as many sporting goods stores across the nation. I think I paid around $12.00. There are no passenger pegs on my bike, so I removed the seat and used two long bolts through the passenger peg mounting holes to bolt a 2 foot length of chain for use as a lifting bridle. I thought about doing the job in my back yard and just hanging the bike from a handy tree, but instead I did the job in my garage on my motorcycle lift table and screwed a ~4 foot length of 2x4 across 4 of the ceiling joists to spread out the load. Painless, quick, and 100% secure. Now that's out of the way, the TTX shock is flat out awesome. It's so nice that it highlights everything the stock KYB front fork does right, or wrong. Up next will be an FGK 235 cartridge kit. Here is a link to a photo of the block and tackle rig hooked to the bike, i57.tinypic.com/10f4c3o.jpg

The chassis stands, on either side ... I dunno about those. Perhaps there's a better stand, where you could gain best support after removing the swingarm stand. I'd use a stand that holds directly to an engine axle, as there's one on the bike in this video. That would be the best support stand in a situation like this. The rather wobbly side stands at the rear pegs look very unstable.

Scary video not how I would remove rear shocks in my bike As for ohlins I have tried them all and ohlins are a little over rated and not so great in my opinion it all marketing??? White power all the way for me So much better to adjust and work with too and the quality of finish is so much better then ohlins as a lot of ohlins products are made in Asia for street bikes
@sportbiketrackgear
@sportbiketrackgear 6 жыл бұрын
There are multiple ways to remove the rear shock, the bike has a lot to do with it as well not to mention the tools and supports available to be used. Replacing the shock using the method I used in this video is a solid approach. Having the stock rearsets on the bike make it a little more interesting than having a set with fixed pegs. That said the bike was 100% stable during the process. There are other good suspension brands out there, Ohlins is one of the very best. I have used it many times with awesome results each time. As for manufacturing in Asia I can't comment on that without doing any research. - Brian Van
