I probably should've gone over how to install VMWare Player... oh well. I also didn't show how to Homebrew your Wii U or install the System Config Tool, but that is a bit out of the scope for this video.

If you're new to Linux, it might seem a bit weird that there is no indication that the terminal is reading your keyboard inputs when typing in your password. Just type it and press enter, it is picking up keys despite not showing it with an asterisk.

Just to make it a little clearer as to the WiFi adapter, all an adapter needs is to have 5GHz capabilities and support AP as an interface mode. In linux, the command to check is "iw list"

Thank you soooo much for this tutorial. I'm not sure who developed it, but that third command saves so much time. I tried this 6+ months ago, but got frustrated after manually installing all the packages and then realizing my WiFi stick didn't work. This turned a 2 hour process into a 20 minute process. Great stuff!

So I actually just did this a while ago and it was kind of a mess in ways. The application window was smaller than it should be and it did not resize. I had to modify the scripts to make it display all UI elements. After that it was a bit touch and go. I used my laptop's built-in wifi adapter (GPD Win Max 2) and I was able to get it to work. All I needed was: 1. Install Ubuntu per this video's instructions 2. Edit script to change window size from 300x150 to 900x450 in /opt/drc/... 3. Connect laptop to ethernet via USB hub 4. Follow instructions based on this video 5. Installed Aroma and paired a gamepad (different region) I had. Glad my new $15 wii u (+ extra gamepad) worked well. Installing Aroma + Tiramisu is a bit scary but at least make sure you never close the application since you can't pair the gamepad while environment loader is open. You can just keep restarting the server without pairing without issues. Then set up Aroma to autoboot and then once it's setup, you can pair any Wii U gamepad. Con is you can't use stock and Tiramisu mode as it will complain about your gamepad being out of region because Nintendo got to Nintendo.

Glad to hear you got it working! I’m not really super deep into Wii U modding so I don’t know anything about the newer software / exploits, but after pairing your out of region GamePad to the system, you shouldn’t need CFW to keep it connected, from my experience! I only needed to use Haxchi to open the system config tool. GamePad stays paired with stock firmware thereafter.

Thanks for this app! I have a weird error, i cannot see the ip in the drc sim Window, the server ip is under the inferior border, is Hidden, and i cannot see it. Sorry for My English jajaj.

This is the closest I've found to a solution to my problem. I have only one question. When you pair the console to DRC-SIM, does the GamePad itself still display its screen? Or is it that the DRC-SIM client and GamePad can't be playing at the same time?

@@SunsetArchon Only either a real GamePad or DRC-SIM can be paired to the console at once. The screen will show on whichever device is paired at that time.

I have an issue. When my feed gets shown in the client, it lasts only for a few seconds and then everything disconnects. I also cannot click OK while it is being shown. I have tried both Android and Windows clients. Do you know how to solve it?

Hi! Thank you for the video :D I don't currently have a wifi adapter. Would my normal internet connection work if I have optical 5 GHz connection or is that something different? Also, the Wii U I wanna do this on its a EU one, but I also have an NA with gamepad. If I connect the NA gamepad to the EU console with sys-config and then I link the gamepad to its NA console, wouldI have to enter sys-config again if I want to link the NA to the EU console (and would I still need DRC-SIM via Ubuntu) or is the EU console region free forever?

i keep having issues with the interface being discovered after using different wifi adapters etc. It shows up in removable devices. im using the netgear ac 6000 most recently thinking it would solve my problem

Hey man, so the stup was going well until i got to the part where i need to input a key into the drc sim server at around 5:00 in the video. The space is blank and i cant click anything. Im using a linksys AC1200 for my wifi, any advice?

I'm not entirely sure, unfortunately! Are you using VMWare? And does the menu in the top right show that you have a Wi-Fi device connected?

@beegchief6872 - If the space is blank where a WiFi adapter SHOULD appear, it generally means it's not compatible with the client software. At least this is my experience in trying probably dozen or so laptops and USB adapters (so far only two WiFi cards showed up). In one case, the it accepted the key and connected properly, but couldn't stream the audio/video in the Java client. Had to do a lot of trial and error until I found one card that worked.

Recently acquired a Wii U without a gamepad (can't even change the Wii U's language or time!) and tried this. After a few hours, I finally got Ubuntu successfully running under VM, but the DRC client's "Get key" option is BLANK. Tried my laptop, two DLink USB adapters and a Netgear, none of them recognized! This is frustrating as my Acer laptop's built-in network adapter (Atheros QCA9377) supports 5 GHz dual band and AP as far as I'm aware, but don't see a way to link it to the virtual OS. Sigh.

I'm having the same problem. I assumed that you would need a second network adaptor for this to work - you might not be able to just use the laptop's built in one. But either way doesn't work for me when attempting to connect to a brand new Wii U with no controller. If somebody is able to shed light on why this is that would be super helpful

Hi! I have a little question, it is necesary to have a Linksys AE1000? Its impossible to me to buy one and I was wondering if other 5GHz wi fi cards or even a phone connected through USB as a hotspot would work. Thank you for this tutorial, im really concerned about the future of the Wii U, since theres a finite number of gamepads and they work as physical DRM, effectively rendering the console useless once the gamepad stops working. I really hope DRC-Sim and similar solutions get further developed. Have a nice day!

The Linksys AE1000 isn’t the ONLY card that works, no. The GitHub repository reports some other card working as well, but I assume there’s only two because they’re the only two that have been tested. I don’t know nearly enough about actual Wi-Fi hardware to pinpoint what specifications a card needs to work- but do note that it’s about the Wi-Fi protocol, not “Wi-Fi” in terms of internet connection. I don’t think a phone mobile hotspot could work because it’s not something your PC can manage. DRC-SIM needs to have direct control over the device, which is why it prompts you to release it from Ubuntu’s NetworkManager.

Hello, Would the TP-Link AC1300 wifi adapter work for this? I believe I set it up correctly, as everything works until I try to connect to my wii u. If it doesn't, what would be some good (cheap) options for wifi adapters?

@aron3050 - Good question. I couldn't figure out how through Virtual Machine, so I installed Ubuntu natively on my latop (installed Ubuntu to an external USB hardisk, and boot from it). The DRC SIM server now works with my laptop's built-in WiFi card, even syncs with the Wii U.....but I'm now stuck at the step getting an IP address and running the Java client. :/

Hey what do i do when the Ubuntu doesn’t recognise my usb wifi adapter as a possible Wi-Fi adapter. It does show up when I use the command lsusb but somehow Linux doesn’t recognise it a Wi-Fi adapter. And no additional Wi-Fi ports are shown in ifconfig.

There is in theory- I’m just not sure how. I’m not sure if the app uses Ubuntu’s built-in package manager to download what it needs or not. I’d personally try just running everything except the apt commands to see what happens, though I haven’t tested it.

I tried to figure out the error and i think I did find what was wrong,but I can't seem to know how to fix it. At some point the computer needs to go to a link to get the dest thing,this link was associated with python. Python it seems changed it's domain so that means that the link doesn't go anywhere(despite the fact that when you click on it,it does redirect you to the correct link), Now I just need to understand how to tell the computer to go look for distro somewhere else,I hope you can help me wit that:)

When I have the time I can try again, but if you use the commands in the video, that _shouldn't_ be an issue. That's something I ran into a lot when trying to install with the GitHub instructions. I had to manually download distro, pexpect, and netifaces from pip- if I remember correctly.

I cannot get it to connect to the Wii U. Every other step before it worked completely fine. I am using the same Linksys AE1000 adapter, I made sure to install the drivers. I tried to use VirtualBox and it didn't work. I switched to VMWare and followed your instructions exactly. Didn't work. I switched to the exact same version of Ubuntu you're using in this video, and it didn't work. I have re-input the code repeatedly, over and over again wondering if I had entered it wrong. Didn't work. The adapter appears in the network section of my devices, the adapter has been added to the VM, I made sure the adapter supports 5ghz in the VM. It still cannot find the console. I have tried moving it right next to the console, I've tried restarting the Wii U, I've tried removing the extender it came with and using the stick alone, and yet it still cannot connect to the Wii U. I have wasted the past 8 hours troubleshooting and I legitimately do not know what I've done wrong or what I can do to fix this.

so can the client and the server run on the same machine in the same sandbox without like having to use a kvm or something, would like to have both run at the same time to use with something like a steam deck to use as my wii u gamepad tablet

To answer your main question: Yes, the client and server may run on the same machine. If you’re running Linux as your main OS, you can do this without VMs so long as you meet the hardware requirements. However, it would probably disable your Wi-Fi until you allow it to be managed again, which I don’t really know how to go about. If you find anything out, let me know! About the Steam Deck: I don’t see why it wouldn’t work. Your default package manager would likely be different, so you can’t use the exact commands in the video. Another commenter says it didn’t work, but I’m not convinced because there wasn’t any explanation of what went wrong. I personally don’t have a Steam Deck but maybe if I’m bored one afternoon I’ll try to get it running on whatever distro that guy was talking about. Apparently it’s basically the same thing.

There are instructions for Arch-based distros on the repository that I’d check out if you’re experienced with Linux (I’m not lol). I’d imagine they’re also broken, but if you know what you’re doing then you might find something useful to start with. There’s also a fork called drc-sim-e that might be looking into. I think it was trying to revive this software but it was a heavy WIP at the time I tried to use it. I’m unsure if it’s still active because I ended up figuring out how to get the original working first.

Yo thank you!! I got it working! but I can’t ever re connect!! Can you make a guide on how to re connect the vm server to the Wii U. I have to create a fresh vm Ubuntu iso boot every time I want to use the drc sim. I can’t seem to find a way to re establish a connection once I close the vm.

Do you have a JRE installed? The client runs entirely on Java so that's all you should need to open it.

@@kitsucroco Yes I have JRE installed.I right click on drc-sim-client-2.0.jar and when it gives me option to open with JDK Java11 Runtime I click on it but nothing happens.

I know this is incredibly late, but I just had an idea at work, haha. Are you running the client from Ubuntu? If so, you might need to go into the file's properties and tick a box allowing it to be executed. From the terminal, you can do "sudo chmod +x drc-sim-client-2.0.jar" in the same directory as the jar. After doing one of those, try opening it again. It might just work.

I think you’d have a difficult time, considering that there’s… 24 possible GamePad code combinations? I’m pretty sure the system doesn’t change its code, so I guess maybe it’s technically possible, just not ideal. With that said, have you tried the analog output on your console? I’m not sure why the console isn’t sending video, but it’s worth trying the old AV connectors if your HDMI is busted.

I have the same issue, tried it with two adapters... a TP-Link T3u as well as a BrosTrend AC1200, the latter is supposed to have official Linux support - opened a ticket with them and am waiting to hear back in case something additional needs to be done to get the drivers to register the device.

Quick update on this... I was able to get my BrosTrend wifi adapter recognized. Model No.: AC3L; their website has a Linux driver installation guide, followed it and within minutes I had the VM show the wifi adapter. However, my problem now is the connected wifi adapter isn't able to "see" any of my networks, as a result it still can't connect to the Wii-U via DRC-SIM.

Another update here... I was able to get the server to install and register. As many have previously suggested, not all wifi adapters work with it... in my case I ended up installing ubuntu on an external hard drive connected to my thinkpad laptop. The built in wifi of the laptop worked for the server bit. However, for some odd reason the DRC-Sim Server window is just short enough that the IP address is hidden and I am trying to figure out alternate ways to locate that IP.

@@saifsterosman The IP being shown is just the local IP address of the VM / Linux machine. You can find it by running ifconfig in the terminal and looking at the IPv4 for the appropriate interface. (Should be the one you selected as the “normal interface” in the “run server” tab)

I don't know, but you can always just try it out. Keep in mind that Windows will not see the adapter once it's passed into the VM, so you will probably want another network adapter for your host OS. Though, I suppose it might not be a _requirement_ as long as you are running the client on the same machine and don't need internet access for anything else while using DRC-SIM.

When running it on my raspberry pi I get the following when trying to start the server (pairing it works perfectly fine) "Failed to Start wpa_supplicant_drc. This could mean there is a configuration error or wpa_supplicant_drc is not installed. Check /root/.drc-sim/log/wpa_supplicant_drc.log for details" the log in question says it initializes and tries to connect but then fails to do so. "Trying to associate with SSID 'WiiU40f4077fb51f' crtl-event-assoc-reject bssid=40:f4:07:7f:b5:1f status_code=16" repeats that 3 times and then says "deinit ifname=wlan0 disabled_11b_rates=0" followed by "wlan0: ctrl-event-terminating"

I’ve tried before, I don’t believe so. The program will install and you can even get it to launch if you have a display server running on Windows such as Xming. However, it did not recognize my adapter as a wireless device so DRC-SIM did not list it as an available option to select. If you can figure out how to get it working, let me know! It definitely sounds preferable to VMWare.

Your wireless interface should start with a ‘w’, use that to connect to your Wii U. Your normal interface should start with ‘e’ because it’s a virtual ethernet connection to your host PC.

@@untlang Unfortunately, your wireless interface probably isn’t compatible then. The selection for Wii U Interface and Get Key have fewer options because it will only list the devices it can use, whereas normal interface can be just about anything since it’s only used for client connection.

Yes. It can be used to connect to any Wii U, modded or not. Should work with any region, too.

@@Rykst3r You don't need the exact same Wi-Fi adapter, but you do need one that you can pass through to a VM with the specifications listed in the pinned comment.

@@Rykst3r - I was able to get it to work with just the one built-in wireless network adapter in my desktop PC. However, in order to do this I ran Ubuntu natively, NOT through a Virtual Machine. It seems to disable the use of the WiFi adapter outside of DRC SIM however, so I can't access the Internet in the OS, but that is okay because I'm just using it to connect to the Wii U.

Only the client is available on mobile, and it's available in the Play Store. You still need the server itself, which has to be run on Linux.

Try opening a terminal window and typing the command “ifconfig” It should give you a bunch of network information, and one of them will be the IP for the VM on your host machine. It’ll most likely follow the same format as 192.168.X.X

@@AngrodCL It will not necessarily be the same exact IP shown in the video. However, running ifconfig will show you more than one address. The one you input into the client should be the one that most closely resembles the one I showed. (NOT 127.0.0.1)

Probably, honestly. These installation instructions are for Ubuntu, but it probably isn't that difficult to get it up on Arch.

No. The OS is not compatible. I just tried on HoloOS, which is SteamOS for none-steam deck devices.

@@theghettotraveler347 I haven’t personally tested it in quite some time, but I’m fairly confident this install method still works. The determining factor is probably just what Wi-Fi hardware you have.

has to be wireless because the Wii U has 2 wifi modules, one for the gamepad and the other for the online and stuff. The gamepad uses 5 ghz to be able to communicate to the Wii U, and you need a wireless wifi adapter that can support the 5 ghz to be able to simulate it onto your PC, and communicate to the Wii U.

Yes. Probably works even better, honestly, considering you don't have to deal with passthrough shenanigans on VMs. You will have to change your /etc/apt/sources.list file to pull from "universe" instead of "restricted", though!

@@LowHeroic - No, with a bootable USB it will work with the computer's built-in WiFi adapter (if compatible). I used an old 2.5" PS3 hardisk I had kicking around, connected to USB dock. Didn't have to change my sources.list file, oddly.
