How To Make A Small American Flag Concealment Box / Key Holder (PART 1 of 4)

A complete DIY step-by-step guide on how to make 2 types of a small American flag concealment box / key holder / gun cabinet. This is the first of a 4 video series on these boxes, with this one showing you have to completely build both types of concealment box. The 3 to follow will cover an alternative way to make the American flag door without a CNC, how to carve the foam to fit your item in the box, and how to mount the box on the wall.

Hey there, I'm still putting this together - the only thing i found i didn't like is the 90 degree hinges, they are very strong. I'm trying to find a less stronger one if possible, but the overall project is looking good. Be in touch soon.

Yes, they are. This was intentional for me because they are able to hold the door up effectively without any additional assistance. They are also cost effective. The only real downside is that you have to control them when closing so that they don't slam down, but I didn't want to have to add gas struts to such a small box. Adding more expensive hinges and struts add to the cost and can make them more difficult to sell (not to mention there's really no room for struts in these boxes). I have made some custom smaller boxes at higher cost when someone orders something like that, but these were designed with the general consumer looking to spend as little as possible in mind. I use European hinges and gas struts on bigger boxes, and you have to be careful with the strength of the struts because they can push the hinges and door out of alignment when closed. Let me know if you find something better, I'm always looking to improve.

Hey, that makes sense - I do like the fact that they don't need a gas strut to hold the lid up - maybe i'm just being wimpy - LOL I did buy a set from Home Depot that I want to try, just to see how they work - stay tuned.

I would use down cut endmill you would not have to sand stripes also i would spray inside box before putting on backer just a thought

Thanks, Mark. No plans yet, though plans for these wouldn't be very difficult to make. My day job has kept me so busy the last few weeks that I just haven't been able to find time for anything. That's why it's been a few weeks since I posted the last video, but I'll get another out this weekend. That's my goal, anyway. As for plans, I've been lagging on putting them together because they can be time consuming, plus I need to get the website up and running so I can distribute them. I'm working on it. Hopefully I'll get something together in the next couple weeks. I'll post a video when the website goes live with everything, so I suggest you subscribe (if you aren't already) and select all notifications if you want to be alerted when that happens.

I'm pretty sure I cover this in Part 2 of this 4 part series (How to make a small American Flag WITHOUT A CNC for a concealment box--I'll link it below), so check that out if you haven't already. In any case, the CNC flag is 9x16 (11/16" stripes), but that means 9/16" stars, which is fine for the CNC, but problematic if you're gluing on stars because you can't find them in that size. That's why the old design was 8-1/8 x 14 or 15 (5/8" stripes), because you can buy the 1/2" stars you need for that size. Essentially, it really depends on how you plan to make the flag because that will be based on the size of stars. If you're doing it on a CNC, you can really make it whatever size you want, just use a flag dimensions calculator (also covered in that other video). But if you're buying stars to glue on, you have to size your flag according to the size stars you get, and the box will be need to be sized based on the size of the flag. I am in the process of making written plans for these boxes and all of the builds on my channel, and once they're ready I'll be selling them on my website, but it's just a basic butt-jointed box that's the same size as the flag. The depth will depend on how thick your foam is, but the with old design (with a solid 3/4" backer inset) I made them with 1x4s (so 3-1/2" deep), and with the new design you see in this video (with the hardboard backer) they can be significantly thinner (1x3s, or 2-1/2 inches).
