I got really tired of marbleizing brown and white clay so one day i just dumped a bunch of mason stain into my porcelain reclaim and wallah, I have any color of clay I want. Of course i usually do this with recycled clay but there is no reason you cant do this with fresh clay was well as long as you mix enough water into the batch.

Tip for Avoiding Lumps: To avoid lumps when adding liquid to any powder, start with a few drops of water, mix until absorbed, then add a few drops more. Once you get to the consistency of a dough, smoosh to reveal any hidden dry clumps. Then once you have it to the consistency of a dough and have eliminated any dry clumps, continue adding a few drops of water at a time. Eventually, you'll get to the same consistency as your slip, and at this point, you add it. [This also works great for adding wasabi to soy sauce or mixing corn-starch with water. Don't; add the soy to the wasabi a few drops at a time. Once you get a wasabi-soy slurry, _then_ pour away with the soy sauce to dilute it to the level you want.]

I love that you are giving us an option for less wedging. My wrists and pain limit my wedging.

I'm new in pottery and I tried this a few month back. I did some researche on how to make your own colored clay. I was just baffled on why on earth you would wedge the stain in to the clay? Your video is the first I've seen using this method. My arms would fall of in the amount of time it would take me. Puls it is a health risk to breathe in the powder so I would have to wear a mask. And I would risk the color to be uneven. And stain getting all over the place. The only "mistake" I did was that i should have weight the dry clay before soaking it in water. Then it would have been easier to calculate the amount of stains. So now I'm doing test with it to see how dark the color is when fired and glazed. Only drying a small amount at a time, wedging, bisque and glaze fired. Haha the amount of time I have put in this "project"! Oh and btw when I've made it into slip, I put it through a sieve. And don't want to find any surprises when turning the clay.

For consistency I suggest adding the stain or other colorant into the dry clay when portions can be weighed, or weigh the clay before slaking it.

Does it matter if you add ‘too much’? Will it make the clay colour just more saturated or can it affect the clay properties when firing?

@@Music4krista1 Most of my experience comes out of mixing colored slips for slipware. I'm no expert, but it's my understanding commercial stains can affect plasticity and have heard experienced ceramicists talk about adding other ingredients to the mix to correct for that. Good idea to do a series of test tiles or even small pinch pots to get a feel for workability and color saturation. For example in large amounts adding straight iron oxide can make the clay much less plastic, but adding Cedar Heights redart or yellow ocher work better. And if that's not enough information overload, it also depends on the clay body too. Some clays react much better than others. Just be patient and you'll get amazing results. You also have to consider what it is you are using for the colorant. Metal oxides like cobalt, manganese and copper can be toxic so you need to minimize skin exposure and dust. Commercial stains are much safer but it still necessary to be cautious. Are you familiar with John Britt? His YT channel is a goldmine of valuable technical information and he's very approachable with questions.

@@deepashtray5605 thank you so much for taking the time to explain this, I've had to take a screenshot and save it as a pic haha. I'm going to buy my first stain and use your tips to get a feel for how the clay behaves. I really appreciate your input :)

I just mixed a bunch of colors before I came in for dinner. I'm brand new to pottery and while everyone in my class ran out and bought a bunch of glazes, I bought mason stains. ok, ok, and a few glazes too... I'm currently experimenting with mixing stoneware (Tuckers white) with several colors then then marbling them with white clay as well as (Tuckers) buff speckled clay. The extreme blue dragon fruit clay inspired me, it's too expensive to ship to NY so I'm going to try to make my own version. & Loved the video on making plaster, I made my second one using the tote method this afternoon. I had unsuccessfully tried twice before following different directions, you guys made it so simple!

Standard mason stains from box stores isn't the right stain because almost all the color will burn out during bisque firing The stains need be encapsulated stains or oxides
