Relive the ages-old tradition of "#Jachtschotel," a centuries-old #Dutch dish. It is an amazing #casserole with onions, apples, and mashed potatoes. The name translates to "Hunter's casserole," and was originally made with the tough cuts of meats of whatever game they hunted. It was cooked for several hours with onions and other vegetables and then baked in a casserole with added apples and mashed potatoes. I have updated the recipe to use #beef short ribs rather than pheasant or wild boar (though feel free to use them if you like!)
Jachtschtel is an easy Dutch classic, perfect for those cold, dark, and rainy Dutch fall or winter nights. It was cold and dreary outside, so I decided to make this.
This dish is a great way to use up leftovers, such as hachee. That way, you don't have to spend hours making a stew from scratch. That's often what my mom would do. I think this dish doesn't have to be relegated to leftovers only; I often make a stew with the sole purpose of making jachtschotel!
If you make this without apples, it's called "filosoof."

Ook heerlijk zeg! Ik maak dit ook regelmatig maar dan met gehakt balletjes, ook kaas on top instead of bread crumbs. Net waar je zin in hebt.

Vandaag de jachtschotel gemaakt en de schaal is helemaal leeg gegeten. Zelfs mijn zoontje van 4 jaar die echt niets lust, had zijn bordje leeg! Ik ben alleen vergeten een foto te maken dus dat doen we de volgende keer :D

love your vids Toine ! you're the best.. Ik heb veel van de dingen die je doet ook gedaan. De Frikandellen was wel een zoektocht maar kerel, 'you hit it!' net als deze jachtschotel. Van je mede Utrechter. Groeten :)

Hi Toine, Cheers and thanks heaps for another wonderful Dutch recipe. Just another tip to cooking mashed spuds (potatoes). I put a 1/4 of a chopped onion in with the potatoes while they are boiling, and leaving the boiled onion in and just pouring off the water - a sensational flavour. Plus when it's time to mash the potatoes I also crack in an egg making sure the egg is mixed through thoroughly though. It makes the mash potatoes creamier and more nourishing than usual. You don't have to worry about the egg being raw as the residual heat from the potatoes cook the egg. I hope you try it out. Deze week gemaakt! Erg lekker, maar ik heb een paar aanpassingen gedaan. Melk door de aardappelpuree in plaats van kookvocht, (daar wordt het smeuïger van). Ook vonden we de appelschijfjes te dik en hebben we de 500 ml bouillon vervangen door 250 ml bouillon + 250ml rode wijn.

Ja lekker en duidelijk uitgelegd. Heb alleen soms nog moeite met de Engelse/VS benamingen van het vlees. In NL toch wat meer onderscheid in snijdelen.

Sinds kort je kanaal gevonden ! Ik woon in Zweden, dus geen kroket, frikandel etc. Fijn dat ik nu de recepten heb en zeer goed uitgelegd ook ! Heb 1 vraag over dit recept. Ik heb geen oven maar wel een crock-pot. Hoelang zou het in de crock-pot gegaard moeten worden ? ( ben een newbie wat betreft koken en bakken ;-) )

I think so, with chicken thighs. You will have to adjust the cooking times… it will cook faster.

Wat ik graag zou zien: 1) het maken van harde, zoete drop 2) trekdrop (goede klassieke trekdrop word niet meer gemaakt in Nederland, er is nu alleen nog maar chemisch smakende surrogaat trekdrop) 3) geel/roze schuimblokken, zoals die ooit werden gemaakt door Hoepman (ook deze zijn niet meer te krijgen inmiddels)
