So Grant, just to recap; You've taught us how to make gunpowder, primer, how to cast, how to smelt metal. Also among this is a projectile launcher that can shoot said black powder or primer with a fuse into a general area. This channel has also taught hydrogen explosives and other improvised weapons (The alcohol cannon) or the SlingBow which can be used to slingshot those Coconut Grenades you fantasized over for a video. Just as a recap of the highlights of ur channel Keep doing crazy stuff Grant. You do it so others don't have to.

You made a mistake. I casted metal using green sand before, and you need to make some plate for your model. For the latches, you should have used latches like those on jars (pickels of jam ones), and I'd have run a string of silicon around the edge of your boxes. For funnels and channels, you want to have quite some more tools. First off, the larger the funnel/channel, the quicker the metal is going to cool down. Second of all, you need to have kind of a wave shape ( _/¯|_) so that the impurities of the metal catch in that turbulence, to get a better casting. Also, you'll need to make the main channel larger than the secondary ones, and add a little extra length for the impurities to go in, instead of your casting. Indeed, impurities have more mass, therefore more inertia, and they won't go into your casting, making the result not only as pure as can be, but also stronger (each impurity actually will be a weak point in your casting. You should also plan on using small reservoirs that'll get filled up, so that the casting, as it cools and shrinks doesn't have any gap on the surface.
@TheKingofRandom
@TheKingofRandom 7 жыл бұрын
The silicone is a great idea. Instead of latches I'm using screws to bolt it into place. Thanks for the tips. Have you any video tutorials on your work?
@Dogeek

Unfortunately not, I actually learned all of that stuff in engeneering school, and used it, and your mini metal foundry to make some metal holders for linear ball bearings,as I'm trying to build a diy cnc machine. Be careful to the seam, as some metal will slightly leak around the edge. For complex shapes you may also need some "cores" (don't know the exact english terminology, as I'm french), especially if you want to make a hollow shape almost fully enclosed. Casting in green sand is incredibly hard if you don't know all that stuff. I suggest your first casting be a spiral, to see the cooling speed of the alloy you're using. It is important the spiral is of even thickness. I can try to make you a drawing for you to see every step of the process. 1. Seam plan. Gotta choose the best one, and sometimes it is easier if it is not a plan. 2. Plan the cores, and be aware that sand is less dense than molten metal 3. The angles. You should leave a slight angle towards the seam plan in your model. If not you won't be able to cleanly remove the piece from its sand enclosure 4. Channels, vent holes, funnels and masses. The main channel should be broad, and secondary channels should be thin and wide. You may need only one funnel, but having more may make the casting a bit better (depends on the viscosity of the molten metal)

I don't have any videos myself, but what Simon is saying is correct. The terminology for your "metal casting box" is the top box is the cope and the bottom is called the drag. I'm sure its in the comments somewhere here but I don't have time to go through them.

I saw the video on reinforcing the refractory with steel wool literally the day after making the second lid to my mini foundry. That lid only made it one use, even though the foundry is still going strong. I got lucky this time and just bought the materials to make greensand and just built a set of flasks (they're called casting flasks btw) right before watching this. Now I know how to line them up much better than the nails and twine I was gonna use.

Couple of quick tips for you, first thing is you don't need those two lids, once you press the sand into the first mold it should be compacted enough that Will hold itself together. If you need to use a lid then the sand is not compacted enough and the mold will most likely become compromised affecting whatever you make. Second thing, a spoon that will work just fine for creating channels to pour the molten metal, even professional metal casters will be just fine with a spoon. Also you're going to want to put a little bit of Talcum powder in between the molds because it'll make it so the top mold can be put on top of the second mall and then sand poured in and compacted without sticking to the sand in the bottom mold as well as getting stuck to whatever is in the bottom mold(which you will have to pull out) it's kind of hard to explain. I understand that this is your experience and such but it wouldn't had to watch a couple of metalcasting videos with the sand. There are tons out there and it's really quite fun to watch strangely enough.

You're right, full disclosure would be nice. If a tool is showcased heavily, TKOR should tell whether it's sponsored or not.
@MartinBgelund
@MartinBgelund 7 жыл бұрын
Joe Nicholls I wasn't aware of that - and since the Internet and KZfaq are global, you (and TKOR) can't rely on every viewer knowing US legislation on that particular topic. So I think that Grant Thompson should just make it clear, that a heavily showcased product is - or isn't - sponsored.

One thing I've noticed that's different on yours compared to other flasks ("sandboxes") I've seen is the addition of some sort of inner texture (e.g. a half-round all the way around the inner wall of each half) to help the sand grip the flask when you're separating the halves and to remove your positive pieces after ramming the sand into place.
