In episode from the 2024 ‪@EnginePerformanceExpo‬ Lake Speed Jr and Ben Strader show two different tools for measuring blow-by, which is the ENEMY of your ENGINE, and as Ben always says, if you want to manage it, you first have to measure it.
Fortunately, ‪@EFIUniversity1‬ happened to have a Ford 7.3L Godzilla engine on the dyno, so let's see what kind of blow-by a factory built engine produces.

I would love to know where to find the engine crankcase flow /pressure numbers. I have never seen them in publications.

What’s your thoughts on installing oil catch can on modern engines? I installed one on a 2022 Toyota Tundra. With 15k miles on it, I have collected and saved about 4oz of oil from being ingested by the engine. Makes me feels good that I did it! Thank you for doing these videos, and sharing your knowledge! 👍🏼

That's miniscule. I'm getting 2oz in 700 miles. ....Hey, almost 300,000 miles on my 4.3 V6 Compression is decent at around 147 to 160.

Is blowby 100% caused by ring seal? I get 2 ounces in my home brew oil catch can after 600 to 700 miles. Compression average is around 150. The valve guides are probably sloppy with 294,000+ miles on the odometer. The seals, nonexistent or turned to bakelite. I'm curious if the condition of my valve guides and seals have any role in blowby and also if they contribute to the oil mist making it to my catch can.

I believe the 'need' for a catch-can is also dictated by the type of oil and properties of that oil..... how much of your oil you loose from its relative volatility... What are your Noack numbers of your oil? Also... When you say 4oz of oil... is that only oil, or emulsified oil... and what component of your oil have you lost because of that volatility (evaporative loss) ?? @TotalSeal #TotalSeal

@@ericrmk7608 It is dirty looking, and maybe even thinner than normal. Maybe even a little milky at times? I see what you are talking about. I guess I would have to test it to see.

The thinner piston ring design used by many modern engines today also increases the possibility of blow-by as well as the possibility of fuel dilution

Working on heavy duty diesel engines I measured crankcase pressure in inches water to help determine engine condition. What’s more important, pressure or flow understanding they are related to each other.

I use Total seal zero gap ,leakdown test = 1 to 2% blowby must be very low wish have the meter to know the cfm.

Part of my maintenance routine following a race is to leak down ole Penelope after I change the oil and run the valves to decide do I pickle her and back the rockers off or is it fresh up time? Now that the mutual BSing is over! Is there a way to utilize one’s leak percentages into CFM? Killer video!

That’s created by the differential pressure caused by the manifold vacuum from closing the throttle.

Where are you attaching it on your valve cover?

That's the best place to connect since there is less splash going on versus the crankcase.

Yes, it is another way of looking at the same thing.

Not without a way to control or measure the gas escaping. Pressure will just build until it finds a way out. Your pressure measurement will only show how much pressure the crankcase can hold before leaking, not the volume of blow-by.

@FadetoBlack1463 I'm not sure I understand your response. Blow-by is a measurement of volume, not pressure. Pressure is the containment of volume. Think about your tires. They hold air under pressure, but that is not an indication of how quickly it was inflated. Crankcase pressure is a measurement of now much it can hold before leaking, which isn't much. It will not show how much blow-by is occurring in real-time, hence the need for a flow meter, and why they use it.

@@dan1906 I see. Maybe that is a more accurate way to measure. I would think however if you has a base measured crankcase pressure and or vacuum and now you have an increase in pressure or reduced vacuum that would show degrading ring seal as well?

Over 5 CFM is not great. Over 8 is really bad.

@@TotalSealwon’t the displacement of the engine have an effect on acceptable values? I would think a 20liter motor will pass a lot more cfm than a 2l while still being ok.

Pressure is one thing. Flow volume (SCFM = standard cubic feet per minute) is another. Sure, they are related, but not the same thing. The device that Lake is holding with the ball and tube is called a rotometer. It measures the amount of gas flow per unit of time.
