This video shows how to paint a radiator using Zinsser perma white. There are three separate radiators in this video, one is in a bathroom, which is rusty at the bottom. This radiator is sanded to remove the rust, then treated with a rust convertor before a coat of Zinsser cover stain is applied, then two coats of Zinsser perma-white are applied. The large radiator has been painted previously, so this is painted using Zinsser 123 as a primer and then two coats of Zinsser Perma-white. The other small radiator is painted using just two coats of Zinsser perma-white tinted to a magnolia colour. For all the painting a quality Purdy XL brush was used, even when painting the rusty radiator.

Brilliant job. I also use the same quality brushes and finish the job with a quality 4-inch mini roller to remove any brush marks. Yet again it is nice to see it done properly.

Gone are the days of smelly radiator paint! water based paint (and of course easy brush cleaning) has come a long way, I still remember my dad painting a radiator, and everyone in the house felt a bit sick for days due to the smell. i cant believe the exterior stain i used on my window frames is water cleanable, its been the most long lasting of all the previous types ive used.

Painting radiators... It can be a heck of a job if you find radiators like the ones I have in my flat. My ones are the same as the ones in your video but with dozens of paint drippings. It was a nightmare. I used a Dewalt Palm sander which helped a lot. Nice video.

I found this really helpfully, I may well give the zinsser a go next time. Personally I'd have used a slightly wider brush. Working with gloss i have often had the gloss tinted the same colour as the walls so the issue of yellowing is not as pronounced as with brilliant white.

I'm hoping to try it on some external window frames next year, because it is water based yellowing should not be a problem with the Allcoat.Thanks for the comment

Thanks for the reply. I used a water based Dulux paint, don't remember the exact paint, but one that is suitable for metal. It goes tacky when the radiator comes on. Have used Dulux gloss in the past, but this turned yellowish after a while. Was also thinking whether Hammerstein radiator paint would be any good. Cheers.

Yellowing gloss used to be a real problem, I think it was due to them being oil based. The hammerite radiator paint should be fine ;-) Thanks for the comments

never use a oil based white top coat unless its something like rustins oil non yellowing if you use your standard oil gloss satin etc the heat will make it yellow very fast. and don't use oil based white on interiors they all yellow in a timeline of 6 months to just over a year always use hybrid gloss and satin etc for whites if you something close to the application of oil for interiors stay white for years.

is this the same 2 coat system you used on the tiles? after seeing that video, i used the 123 and the permawhite in my bathroom and its still going strong 3 years later! (over old pink gloss tiles that were there when i bought the house) I have plenty of 123 and perma white left over so this would be a perfect use for them as i have a couple of radiators that need repainting
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 8 жыл бұрын
+joeshaft Yes, it is the same system. But if the radiators have not previously been painted with another paint (apart from that applied in the factory) you can just use two coats of Perma-white (you can now get it tinted to any colour). Thanks for the comment

After watching your video over and over again whilst researching the products, I had to subscribed! It's so well explained and so informative. Please, if I could have your opinion on this, I'd be so grateful. We have 3 radiators, one in the bathroom (really rusty at the edges, a bit like the one in the video), a small one in the kitchen with slight rust (not very noticeable) and one in the hallway with no rust. If I had to choose between buying Zinsser cover stain or 123, which one would you advise (I know one is oil based and the other water baed) or I really need both of them for the rusty radiator in the bathroom. Thank you.

use a product called strip away it can strip up to 30 layers in one coat also try a wire brush if its flaked enough then degrease with methylated spirits then if you don't know if your rad is non ferrous or not play it safe and use a oil based metal primer give it a light sand and if you want a oil top coat in white use rustins undercoat satin or gloss non yellowing oil dont use a regular oil gloss satin in white it will yellow very fast. if not use hybrid paints or acrylic topcoats.

+Zed Man I used some Zinsser AllCoat earlier in the year and that covered really well. I was so impressed with the black gloss that I bought some white gloss for painting the external window frames in my garage, but I have been so busy this year that I didn't get chance to do it before the colder weather arrived. Hopefully I'll get a chance to try it next year!I went to the painting and decorating show in Coventry this year and had a chat with one of the guys on the Zinsser stall. I said that the AllCoat covered well but was not as glossy as regular gloss paint. He explained that because it's water based you do not get the initial high gloss, like you do with oil based gloss- but it lasts much longer without yellowing.I never used to be keen on painting, but if you use good quality brushes/rollers/paints it makes the job much easier- I now find it quite enjoyable! Thanks for the comment

the easiest water based glosses satin undercoat I've used is johnstones trade aqua you can use the undercoat as wood primer also but if there bare remember knotting solution for water based paints if really resinous 3 undercoats 2 gloss if will give you same finish as oil if already painted then 2 undercoats and 2 glosses.

The Perma white is what I bought about 4 years ago when I was renovating one of my own properties, I bought it from ebay which is why you can often see brown packing tape around the top of the tins. I like products that work and do exactly what they are supposed to do. Just recently I painted this two bedroom flat from top to bottom and almost exclusively used Zinsser products, apart from some Dulux Supermatt, Glidden magnolia emulsion, Leyland eggshell and some oil based gloss (can't remember the make).
