Today we "Turn Off" The TPMS light on my 2005 Nissan Xterra. I accomplish this by removing the instrument cluster and obstructing the light coming from the TMPS LED. Let me know in the comments below what material you used to stop the light.

Ry, do you know if the TPMS system is involved in traction control at all? If the car uses it to sense wheel speed and activate traction control, I would rather replace the batteries/sensors than replace the light since I would want to have fully functional traction control/VDC. Hoping to avoid paying a lot to have them replaced next time I get my tires rotated and balanced.

The wheel speed sensor in the hub is what determines wheel speed. on some newer cars it might play a role (never heard of it) but in these Xterras it's just telling pressure.

My Xterra is a 2012 PRO-4X and it has the light but it also flashes "Check" "Tire" "Pressure" in the LCD area where the odometer is. I think it was on the odometer side, it might have been on the RPM side. I just got my Xterra and it had a low tire so the light and flashing text was on. Aired it up & drove it for 10 mins and they both went away. But I am considering doing a 2" lift and larger tires that would aired down when off roading. Or maybe even run at a lower pressure than the stock tires all the time. Covering the light up is a good solution for the light, but what about the blinking text in the LCD area? Any clue how it can be just completely disabled? I notice that your cluster only has one LCD area at the Odometer but the 2012 also has an LCD on the RPM gauge side that shows the 4WD/4WDLow/2WD indicator. I am OCD and blinking lights or warning lights or in this case flashing text would drive me completely crazy LOL It is crazy that they do not give you a way to disable this system in the event of a tire size change out.
@Rythecarguy
@Rythecarguy Жыл бұрын
Well, it's all BS laws. TPMS was mandated by the federal government under the TREAD act. So, no one will disable it for you, and you can't do it yourself. It's insane. But I didn't even think about the LCD screen cause my Xterra is the super basic one.

@Jared S Don’t listen to this tool bag, He is just a KZfaqr pretending to be a mechanic! The answer is yes the LED bulbs that light up your dash are orange, And yes you can replace those bulbs with any color you would like! There is a video on KZfaq showing how it was done on a Nissan, He changed his dash from orange to blue! If you remove your instrument cluster and send it to an electronic shop they should be able to do that for you fairly cheap, If you are experienced with micro soldering and have the tools you can do it yourself! In that video they even give you the part number and website where you can order the replacement bulbs for your dash, It is not hard at all I did the dash in my 06 Frontier! If I find the video I will come back and post a link!

I was going to do this a few years ago but I was afraid of removing the instrument cluster for fear of not having it working on reinstallation. I had the tpms sensors replaced when I needed new tires at Walmart. It was very reasonable. Now I am dealing with a persistent P0442 small evap leak code every few days. Tell me how to disable that system as I have gone the route of new gas cap, evap solenoid. I currently have the canister exposed (getting at it is a real joy). Looking for leaks at o rings on the canister.
@topherd1011
@topherd1011 2 жыл бұрын
To find that Evap leak you’re gonna want someone to smoke it.. finding that leak without smoke is going to be next to impossible. If it’s not the cap or solenoid.. inspect the canister, hoses, and fuel neck. It’s hard to inspect without the use of smoke though. Disabling the anti-pollution system is darn near impossible. You can remove the light bulb for the check engine light but it’ll never pass inspection with that code- the code will still be stored. At least have it smoked so you don’t have to guess what it is. 100-150$.
@lorettacaputo6997
@lorettacaputo6997 2 жыл бұрын
@@topherd1011 I live in a rural area and they don't do emission testing, so that is not a concern. I clear the engine code every time it appears just to make sure that I am not getting a different code and that the evap code remains the same. If the leak was a large leak, not the small leak, I think the smoke process would be useful. I would not incapacitate the SEL as it would warn me of any other codes.

Or....you could just get new TPMS sensors next time you get a set of tires. Wasn't that expensive for aftermarket ones through Les Schwab tires...something like an extra $30 per tire for my '08 Xterra. So my OEM sensors lasted roughly 12 years, and the new ones haven't given me any trouble at all, and in fact warned me perfectly like they should when I picked up a nail in my tire on the way to work last July. I've become a fan of the system. When properly programmed and calibrated, it has been relatively trouble free for me except the last year on the OEM sensors when the batteries were going dead. Don't get me wrong Ry, I enjoy your channel and have been wrenching on my Xterra since I got it new in '08, but I'm not with you on this one.

@gpzjeffrey7974
@gpzjeffrey7974 2 жыл бұрын
I didn't think I'd need it either, experience has told me otherwise. Every time the light came on solid has been from a low tire pressure. Every time it flashed (which has been less than a handful of times in 13 years) was due to a system error. Resetting it worked most times, once the system had to be reset and reinitialized by my local tire shop, Les Schwab, who did it for free. Same for my wife's Armada, except she hasn't had any errors at all. Also, the system on the Armada will tell you the pressure of each tire so you know which one is low.

The TPMS sensors are around $60 for a 4 pack and you just have to take the tires off, pull the old sensor and put the new one in. If you live in cold areas where the air in the tire contracts and you genuinely need to kind of keep an eye on your tire pressure this is not the best idea.
