I always use the BPM Overlay because I love Radials. Even with the recent update that brought SIC to the Desktop Overlay I still BPM for the on-screen elements. Otherwise, Steam Input should work flawlessly with the Desktop Overlay.

@@criticalinput I use it when I have to because it takes up some resources (CPU, around 10% extra), and sometimes I get a glitch or something where steam uses 30% or more of my cpu while I'm playing a game. I like BPM though, especially the features where you can see the overlay of your settings and button presses to better configure your custom settings (mouse region for example).

Yeah, I totally understand that. I ran some tests on BPM vs Desktop CPU utilization a while back and BPM is definitely a resource hog, especially when you open the on screen keyboard.

According to Valve's list of supported devices (support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=5199-TOKV-4426) it doesn't look like any wired Switch Pro Controllers have native support through Steam Input. However, this list *could* be old and lacking recently added devices. I seem to recall a few changelogs for Steam Input that mentioned support added for new third party Switch Pro Controllers. So my first series of question would be: Can you use the wired Switch Controller to navigate Steam's Big Picture Mode? Have you enabled Switch Pro Configuration Support in Steam's Controller Settings? Do you see a Switch Controller when you open up the Steam Input Configurator? Can you use your wired Switch Controller in other games? If the answer to any of those is "no" then the issue is with Steam Input not being properly set up for your controller. If you answered "yes" to all of them then the issue is with getting Steam Input working with Apex Legends. These are two completely different issues so I'm just making sure that I'm helping you troubleshoot the correct one so that I don't waste your time.

Haha, I've been there wayyyy too many times. Even though I've owned this device for over 3 years AND I mentioned this exact thing in my Trigger Tutorial I still run into this from time to time. Is there anyway to play half controller and mouse on APEX i do this on every game but this one I keep having the stutter problem you was referring to. I hate using keyboard for movement in FPS games. Do you have any idea if this is possible?

Nope. Respawn intentionally wrote the input code this way. You'll have to make a pure XInput or pure k+m config. You can try asking Respawn to change this but it falls in line with other cross platform BR games so I don't see that happening.

I think you're describing the Controller HUD. If that's the case then open the Steam Overlay and click on Controller HUD and it should stop.

GloSC works fine but it separates the game from Steam's overlay which is typically a less appealing option. Primarily, you'll need to run the game in Windowed Fullscreen for the full overlay features (not alt-tabbing to overlay, being able to see OSD functions like Radial menus) which requires more resources, reducing framerate/performance. This forces the user to choose between functionality and performance while native hooking doesn't. Due to this I always recommend finding a method that allows for Steam to actually hook into the game. As far as I'm concerned, GloSC should only be used as a last resort like with Destiny 2 and Win10/UWP games since they both actively fight against Steam Input's hook.

Steam is getting stuck in the launcher. If you are using the "Close Origin First" method, well don't do that. OSOL was created for this exact situation. If you are using OSOL then it sounds like you might have something set up incorrectly.

So you want to use a gyrometer to aim you guns but you don't want any jitters? That's a little difficult. You could use split controls, like JoyCons, and place the majority of bindings on your off-hand so that your primary hand is only doing the aiming. Or you could use Minimum Movement Threshold in Steam to discard the tiny jitters. This effectively makes a deadzone though so it might affect your smaller, intentional movements as well.

A couple of questions (they might seem basic but I want to make sure we're on the same page): Do you have Switch Pro Controller Support enabled in Steam? Does your Switch Pro Controller work in other games through Steam Input? Do other controllers work in Apex Legends using either of these methods? Where are you trying to customize your button layout? It should be done through Steam Input's Configurator and not in-game.

So you enabled Nintendo Controller Support and made a config for the non-steam shortcut you added to Steam? Do you happen to have an AMD GPU?

Search on youtube for a installation guide for "better joy for cemu v3" it lets the procontroller act as xinput

I would personally advise away from Better Joy. It's a fine XInput wrapper for NSPCs but, last time I checked, it didn't allow for binding things to the gyro.

My first thought is that your config is improperly set up. If you could link your config I can look it over and see if I see anything wrong. Also, what controller and OS are you using?

So you've enabled Switch Pro support in Steam, disabled Origin's overlay, added the shortcut to Steam just like in the video (either method), made a config for Apex Legends, and launched the non-Steam shortcut? And after doing all of those steps it isn't working? Do you happen to have an AMD graphics card? I've heard that it interferes with Steam hooking into Apex Legends. If you open Task Manager and end "AMD External Events" then it should work fine after that. Alternatively you could use GloSC. It's overkill (since this should work without it) but it's guaranteed to work. For the GloSC shortcut check "Enable Overlay" and, if you use XInput bindings, "Enable Controllers," and then add r5apex.exe to the path. Then save that shortcut to Steam and when you run it make sure to change Apex's fullscreen setting to Borderless Fullscreen. And if all else fails and you don't mind forfeiting radial/touch menus and XInput, you can add keyboard and mouse bindings to your desktop config and just run Apex Legends in Origin. Steam won't hook into it and so your desktop config will be utilized.

Update: I have no idea if this has anything to do with it, but the controller is now working. It started working after it showed the Steam Community popup after apex started loading (bottom right corner at 1:40)

If it wasn't doing that before then Steam wasn't hooking into Apex which explains why your controller config didn't load. But yeah, you'll want to see that pop-up every time since it's how you know that everything is working properly.

This works for any controller that you are using with Steam Input. So yes, it should work for the NSPC.

@@criticalinput Sadly it doesn't for me. Only my right sticks acts as a mouse for some reason. Maybe I need to change something in the settings, but don't really see what to change.

Just to figure out where you're at I'm gonna ask some basic questions. Please don't be offended by these inquiries :) Did you enable Nintendo Controller Support in Steam? Did you make a config for this game? Is your config for M+K or XInput?

@@criticalinput Yes, I enabled the controller support and the buttons work fine in steam. And I don't think I made a config for this game at all.

That could be it. I'm not sure what config would be defaulted to since this is a non-steam game. Basically just right click the shortcut you added to Steam and click "edit controller config." From here you can define what each button on your controller does.

I'm going to guess that you downloaded the source code and not the release zip. Make sure you click on the Releases tab and not the "Clone or Download" button on the GitHub page.

Yup. This method works for any controller that Steam Input supports -- which is pretty much any controller.

Any time that you use Steam Input you'll see Xbox buttons. There isn't any way around this because it doesn't have PS4 output support -- mostly because so few games have native support for the DS4.

I get the notion that you have a bias against the SC being competitive because it's a controller. You should do some research into why controllers have historically been too slow for faster titles. A hint: it has to do with the joystick. Back on topic though, check out the Quake Champions montage on this channel or check out SteamController Player's entire channel. Gryo aiming is more than accurate enough to go against mouse aiming.

If you're curious and/or actually want to move away from mouse aim then I highly suggest giving the SC an honest shot at playing FPS games. But if you don't think you'll give up mouse aim or if you aren't willing to devote 2-3 weeks to building some basic muscle memory for it then I'd suggest just sticking to k+m. However, I do urge you to keep an open mind about the SC whether you use it or not. On a technical level the gyro and touchpads are vastly different from the joystick and are actually very similar to the mouse.

Just go to this GDrive link, go to the Apex Legends folder, and in the "Config Information" document is a share link for my Apex config. Either way should open the config in Steam.

Nope. It is only available on Origin. Luckily it's free to play and 6 out of the 8 current heroes are unlocked from the start. Everything else is cosmetic.

Yup, using the Desktop Config is a method that is guaranteed to work. But being forced to use m+k isn't the only caveat. You'll also lose access to any overlay features (Radial/Touch Menus, changing your config in-game, etc). And it'll mess with your Desktop Config -- if that means something to the user.

If you are actually missing that file in Apex Legends' install folder then I would suggest having Origin verify Apex's installation to download any missing files. However, if you can still run Apex Legends then you are probably looking in the wrong folder for the .exe file.

Absolutely! I played 3 matches earlier with a DS4. The best part is that you'll have access to gyro aiming, unlike if you were playing on an actual PS4.

This video is to help you get Steam Input hooked into the r5apex.exe process so that any controller running through Steam Input will work with Apex. The Steam Controller is just one of hundreds of controllers that is supported by Steam Input. So while this method isn't exclusively about the Steam Controller it will certainly work for it.
