Liar's Dice is a game of deception and chance dating back to the Incan Empire, but featured prominently in the original Red Dead Redemption and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. It's been my favorite campfire game since learning it in Red Dead. Now, learn a bit of the history, learn how to play it, and see one of the more unique antiques in my private collection - an original, incomplete set of Liar's Dice found in the hollow of a tree in the middle of the Arizona desert!

I did a spot on bid on Red Dead Redemption on the 360 in 2010. There were 5 players. All of them, including myself, had one die left. My spot on bid was right and they all lost at the same time. I had to mute my microphone lol.

I always thought that when someone calls a "spot on" correctly, everyone else looses a dice apart from the person that called it. This seems to remove the idea that only the person who bet being punished for essentially betting correctly. Give it a try next time, it's pretty good
@glmathgrant
@glmathgrant Жыл бұрын
I always understood that a correct call of "spot on" causes the player who made the call to regain a lost die; either way, the higher risk "spot on" call carries a higher reward than calling the previous player a liar, as it should. The important thing is for all players to agree on the rules beforehand, since many different variations on the rules do exist!

The "spot on" rule makes no sense to me. It basically punishes the bidder for guessing correctly and there's no defense to it.
@PowerStar004
@PowerStar004 3 жыл бұрын
Well, on one hand if it's your turn, you know that the last bid was correct, and the bid is high enough that raising it will get your bluff called for sure, it's nice to have a defense against THAT. On the other hand, there are versions of liar's dice where there is no spot on. They are specifically using the Red Dead Redemption version, but if you don't like spot on, you can play without it. There's also versions of liar's dice where calling spot on correctly awards an extra die to the person that called it. This makes spot on meaningful, without directly punishing the prior bidder for being right.

Slightly different rules than the other video on KZfaq which they don't add an old west vibe. In the other ruleset the player who loses a die goes first. I also wasn't aware of the "spot on" option. One Question...why do you have to only increase the face value when making a new bet. For example after someone bets "four 4s", why can't you counterbet "five 2s"? Like why can't you bet on a lower die number but keep the bet amount the same or higher? Good content thank you
@fan9775

Because then the risk is lowered.

Because of luck, your better of betting a low die number such as six 2s because that's more likely to occur than two 6s

You CAN go from four 4s to five 2s. You just can't go from four 4s to four 2s.

@Pepe-ts9ec Жыл бұрын
@@matthewaskew8076 There is a 1/6 chance to get any number on a die. Getting 6 of any number is inherently less likely than 2 of any number. By your logic, you'd be more likely to roll 6 1s than you would to roll 1 6. And that isn't true.

Here is why 6 is worth less than 5,4,3,2,1. The amount of weight removed from each face of the die to make the dimples. Therefore the odds are actually skewed ever so slightly. That means 6 is the most often thrown number on cheap dice that don’t have a counterweight

I think there should be a rule for no calling on the first cycle. The odds of someone guessing correctly on the first turn between all 15 dice starting on the table is staggeringly low, so of course you can say they’re lying and almost certainly be correct. That’s not strategy or playing a game, that’s just unfair. Let the players bluff a bit and throw off the others with their bids. This presents its own problems, but still.
@PowerStar004
@PowerStar004 2 жыл бұрын
I think you're missing something. When you call liar, it doesn't have to be anything but exactly right. For example, suppose I said one one, the lowest possible bid. If you call liar and there are zero ones, you'd be correct. But if there is AT LEAST one one, you'd be the one losing a die. You'd lose a die if there are two ones, three ones, etc. The person doesn't have to be spot on, they are correct as long as they are not bidding TOO MUCH.

they have explained the rules, but are playing the game in a stupid way, calling results right away is no better than wild guessing. better way would be to go at leest one turn, letting eweryone say what they have to say, collect more information, and than make a decision, the more turns game goes the more information you have, and the better decision you can make. great depiction is scene from pirates of the caribien, where the stakes are really high, and no one wants to loose

I don't care for the "spot on" rule because it is antithetical to the 'liar' part of liar's dice. There's no real play or counterplay to a 'spot on' call. If you call it right you didn't catch someone in a bluff. If you call it wrong it adds nothing to the game because you hoisted yourself.
