I’ve found that waking up an hour earlier to read helps. This year alone I’ve managed to read 50 books.

I can barely watch television anymore. I do not deny that there are great shows and movies out there, but I've watched enough television for two lifetimes already.

I think what you read is more important sometimes than how much you read. I think too many people, even when it comes to social/civil rights issues, are not challenging themselves enough. It's okay to struggle through reading something.

With ebooks I have the feeling that i'm just skimming through and not really taking in any information. I just love the physical copies❤

I have found the opposite actually. With two pages in front of me I am more likely to let my eyes jump to the next page.

I consciously swapped browsing social media (besides KZfaq lol) for reading. I can’t believe how much time I was wasting before; I can get through books in a few days now (where before it took me a minimum 2 weeks).

Pandemic hit, I have no job, and no excuse to not read... *games and watch series instead* I've started to get into the routine to read before bed again, and I really enjoy it. :)

I've started getting myself to read a chapter a day during lunch. Part of my problem is getting through the set up at the beginning of the book, even if I think I'll really like the more in-depth parts later. Making myself get through the slower parts has really helped me want to finish the rest in my down time at home.

No matter what the book, the first 50-100 pages are always the hardest part for me. Mostly because I have commitment issues lol. I’m always thinking “you still have time to switch to another book” 😂 but after 50-100 pages is the “point of no return” for me, where I must finish the book. My speed picks up then.

Trying to get back into reading multiple books at once by reading a bit faster and visualizing. If I can’t visualize what I’m reading within the first few chapters.I pass on the book
@TheArtisanGeek
@TheArtisanGeek 4 жыл бұрын
That's so smart, I've recently trying to pass on books if I can't really get into the story - it's so liberating haha! And reading multiple books has helped me a lot as well! Sometimes I'm just not in the right mood for something and then I can switch.

I like what you said about goals, it's felt stressful to me, too. One year I had a goal of 100, just to say I had done it, but it just wasn't fun. :( I also loveee audiobooks. I fall asleep to them, I've been listening to so many of them since I've been sick over the holiday, on the train whenever I have to travel, they're so versatile. I struggle with chronic fatigue as well, and when I'm too exhausted to pick up and focus on a print book/ebook, audiobooks to the rescue.
@TheArtisanGeek
@TheArtisanGeek 4 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah I totally get it, because sometimes you end up reading solely to reach your goal. It's funny though, because no one ever thinks to set a goal of watching 50 seasons of shows a year hahah. Oh yeah audiobooks are the best for falling asleep oh my gosh, especially if the narrators voice are soothing haha. I'm sorry to hear you have been sick, I hope you get well soon and enjoy your audiobooks!! :)

eliminating entertainment and waking up earlier have been rly helpful for me. I still struggle with it of course, but I (like lots of ppl I guess) got to a point where I couldnt keep trying to make more time, if I want to spend time on an activity that means spending less time on a different activity, so it really takes a restructuring of my routines and comfort

I'd also add, start with things that you already love. I've heard many friends telling me how hard it is for them to read but I feel they push themselves to read what they "should" read. Renowned authors like Virginia Woolf and stuff or maybe a whole popular saga. If you're not used to reading just find things that you already like, follow all of this lovely woman's suggestions and you won't even notice how much you are starting to read. It's a habit and it takes practice, and you actually feel so happy when reading becomes part of your daily life. You learn new things, travel, imagine, understand different types of people, places, ways of thinking and seeing the world. Reading actually helps you, it gives you something valuable.

I need to get better at picking the book up during those small breaks. Instead I just sit and think about doing it for 20-30 minutes, and by the time I finally pick it up...I've got no time left

Thank you for talking about audio books! Audio books count! It's like listening to a play or TV show that you can imagine in your head- and multiple can listen with you and enjoy the experience.

I read on the commute, when I'm having lunch at work, when my fiancée is watching something I'm not interested in (or when it's his turn on the PlayStation) in bed, and on the toilet! I set a goodreads target last year and it definitely made me read more, but it was realistic. I read 14 in 2018 and I'll have read 22 in 2019 so I think I can still do more 😀

I love Tip #9! My first couple of years tracking, I made the mistake of setting my goal too high and it felt terrible. My only real goal now is read 52 books a year, because I want to be able to say "I read a book a week." I think I might actually get there this year for the first time? I admire the people who read 100+ books a year, and I am double impressed you set your goal to 200! I could never, but I'm totally fine never getting to that point. My focus is split between bingeing TV, reading, writing, and creating art, and I'm fine with that : )

Oooh tips 9 and 10. Yes! I love audiobooks. I’m trying to get back into physical copies as well since I tend to lose focus when I’m reading a physical book. But also, it’s so important to just enjoy reading. Yeah I want to read more and part of that is for intellectual benefit, but mostly it’s because I used to enjoy it so much and now I don’t. Where did that go? But I shouldn’t have to force myself to like it, but try and find what I actually enjoy.

Really like these ideas! I just found your YT channel and effing love your content. Something that really helps me (and might help other ppl) is having a couple books going at a time on different platforms. I find that I have no excuse not to read if I have a couple options (not just audiobook vs paperback but also easier read vs more time/brain intensive)

I've replaced most of my TV watching with reading, listen to audiobooks on my commute (I drive to work) and during housework. I also use kindle on my phone while putting my baby to sleep, black screen with white writing means the room is still dark enough for him to fall asleep while I can read.
