I tried this many years ago before watching this video on a 60s Rogers bass drum. I not only caught it on fire, I then dropped it on my deck where it rolled down the stairs and across the yard like a flaming tire after a horrible car wreck.

I have a '75 Ludwig jazz set with ugly, cracked wrap. I was able to get the wrap off all the drums without damaging the shells. On the rack tom, the glue came off (tediously), but I can't seem to find anything to work on the floor and bass. Tried the heat gun on low to soften the glue. Didn't work. Tried spraying it with Goof Off. Didn't work. Covered it in adhesive/paint stripper from Lowe's. That only helped remove the outer coat of glue. Might add that the entire shell is covered in glue, not just the wrap seams. Any suggestions? Thanks.

once i bought a cheap 12" tom (even though i already have one) just so i could paint it and the wrap was held on by the lugs. i took the hardware off then it literally fell off. i thought the wrap removal was the hardest part!. also on a side note, i painted it with a test pot of wall paint and then sprayed small dots of purple all around it. looks great and still using it.

What would you recommend I do for making a gong drum out of an old 16 inch floor tom? I don't know who to go about it, but from what I understand about gong drums they use an oversized head (much like a timpani drum) so I would assume that I could get away with just making spacers for the lugs.

Another great video. I just picked up a Ludwig Custom Accent Jazz drum set (Chinese made). Is there a trick or shortcut to use the wrap is slightly loose on one side and a small area of the floor tom. I now know how to remove the wrap - but was hoping I don’t have to-because most likely I won’t be able to find the wrap to replace it. Help? What adhesive is a good one to use on drum shells? thank you!!!

So burning the wood on the drums doesn't add to the sound or flavor of the drums unlike with whiskey or bourbon. Good to know. BTW, I would have lost it and gotten out a sledgehammer when the air vent didn't come out with a few hammer blows.
@jmb925553 жыл бұрын
I don't know if you mention this in the vid and I missed it but... do not do this with a vintage Ludwig 3 ply. It isn't nearly as easy as this and you may not like what you find underneath the wrap. Also you will almost definitely end up using wood filler on the places where part of the ply comes off with the wrap. And whatever that adhesive was that Ludwig used is veryveryvery hard to remove. You will end up taking off some of the outer ply in the process of removing the adhesive. That's in addition to the wood that came off when you removed the wrap. TL;DR Don't do this with a vintage 3 ply even if the wrap is really crappy

I found that a heavy, rugged, single keyboard sissor stand is great to use working on drums. Seemingly... almost NONE of the factory latching positions ever fit the shell I'm working on.... but that's easily "fixed" with a cheap nylon ratchet strap looped through the bottom legs. Also, I wrap the top bars in folded paper shop towels and tape them on to protect the drum. Just sayin'..... PS.... if you work on guitars, a garage sale ironing board with a pad is great. You can work from either side without turning the instrument around (with the pickups or controls hanging out). Shouldn't scratch if you wash the padded cover every now and then. Actually TWO covers are better. Older, heavier ironing boards with good legs and the longest/widest footprint you can get are the best. Just sayin' again....

Oh yeah, they both fold up and don't claim too much shop space.

I'm in the middle of restoring a drum set for my school and the wraps are glued all the way around. I've been using isopropyl alcohol to dissolve the glue and then just peeling it off. Is this damaging the shell? I already did half the kit, so it's a little late if it is. If anybody has any other tips, I'd love to hear them. The wraps being glued all the way around makes the removal process awfully tedious.
@rdavidr8 жыл бұрын
Its probably held down with contact cement. So heat will help, but try using acetone. Its stronger than alcohol. What youre doing, or using acetone, wont damage the shell because it evaporates so fast.

Alright, and said something about staining the wood. That can be done with any stainer right?
@zaltuguitar8 жыл бұрын
honestly it's more of a personal preference really. if you like the look and all. I know they do protect the wood from the elements and general wear and tear so if you didn't want it on there you'd at lease want to stain or laquer it so the wood is protected
@zaltuguitar8 жыл бұрын
+Ricardo Ayon yup it'll just be a preference of color at that point. most stains apply exactly the same. Any hardware store will have a chart of colors that'll give you an idea of what it'll look like. as far as applying it's pretty simple, but if you're not sure there's plenty of videos on applying stain to wood.
