How to Remove Transmission 1994-1997 Honda Accord plus Clutch Replacement

Worked on a 97 Accord LX today. Transmission has a hole in the bottom. After inspecting it, looks like a head of one of the bolts inside the shifter selector broke and got stuck under the differential and the force of the spinning differential broke off a huge chunk of the transmission.
I also replaced the rear main seal, flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing, and the output axle shaft seals.
It was cool working on something a little different. This was my first time changing a transmission and clutch on a 94-97 accord model. It went pretty smoothly with no major problems.

I have another question about my 94 Accord. The power steering went out long ago, the pump works but turning it is hard and drips a stream of power steering fluid when I turn. Now that has to be the rack and pinion correct?

Subscribed! I really love how you showed everything so well and explained every important detail while keeping it short and sweet. I have a 1990 CB7 Accord and it's making some terrible clunking/whirring noises when I push in the clutch. I can feel it very strongly in the clutch pedal as well but it still shifts and works fine. Well, I've never done a job this big and even though my car's 7 years older that yours, it still helps with the basic steps and gives me more confidence in diagnosing it myself 👍 Thanks again for taking the time to make this and I'm really looking forward to watching some more videos on your channel man! Keep up the great work on the awesome cars bro!!

I really appreciate you taking the time to write such a nice comment. I love to hear it. The process should be very similar and help with yours. There will probably be very minimal differences between the different generations! Good luck with your Accord, I think you should attempt it, and this is a great guide to help you alone the way! Thanks so much!!

Hey it's no problem, I really think this is the most helpful clutch video I've ever seen and thought you should know lol. But yeah as intimidating as it is for me to pull the transmission, I'm feeling confident now. I just got a quick question for you if you don't mind. Around 5:50 in your video, you talked about removing a plate at the bottom of the transmission. I noticed the flywheel was exposed after that. Is there anything else you can see in there? Lol, it might be a dumb question but I'm just curious if I'd be able to remove it and possibly see what's causing my problem? Anyway, you've been extremely helpful and I'm so happy I stumbled onto your channel haha! Thank you very much again for all your help!!

@GarageBuiltHondas
@GarageBuiltHondas 7 жыл бұрын
Christopher White Nothing else, just a 12 pt socket. Otherwise you risk stripping the flywheel/pressure plate bolts. Trust me it's not fun and not worth it. I stripped a flywheel bolt before and had to grind the head off to get it removed. I was even using a 12pt socket but it slipped. What a PITA that was.

My seal leaks and I'm trying to figure out if I have to remove the transmission to get to it. Or can I take it apart and slide the seal off like the B series civics. Double check everything is disconnected. It may be the input shaft of the transmission is just still inside the clutch. Possibly loosen the bolt that holds the driver side mount to the car so the mount will swing down and let the transmission get even closer to the ground. Then pull at the transmission, or use a small pry bar to help pull it away from the block of the engine.

Total capacity is 6.3 quarts for the auto trans, but depending on what you drain the amount you add may vary because of the fluid that will be in the bottom of the radiator in the cooling tank part and any left in the lines. After you finish keep adding fluid until you get close to the fill line. Then warm up the car and check the level and add more if needed.

The ATF you used should be fine. I found this info on Google. Common Problems That Trigger the P0720 Code Defective Output Speed Sensor Defective Shift Solenoids Defective Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor Defective Valve Body Dirty transmission fluid that restricts the hydraulic passages Defective Output Speed Sensor wiring or connector I'd try troubleshooting each to narrow it down. Maybe you have a bad connection? The wiring is old, take a look at all of the connectors.

Is it possible to do this without removing the front motor mount? One of the bolts in mine is frozen up
@GarageBuiltHondas

You can probably just discount the mount from the transmission and leave it there. Shouldn't be a problem.

hey man, hoping you reply, but im about to replace the clutch on my 2001 honda accord 4 cylinder, and i was just wondering if its the same as this? it'll be my first time ever doing something big like that but mechanics around me charge a fortune so haha, and another question, it is necessary to drop the transmission to just replace the clutch/throw out bearing/ pressure plate? thank you so much!
@GarageBuiltHondas
@GarageBuiltHondas 7 жыл бұрын
The process of dropping the transmission will be very similar if you have a 4 cylinder manual transmission model. And yes, you have to remove the transmission to get to those parts unfortunately.

I'm swapping a motor and trans, converting a wagon from auto to a manual trans I pulled from a wagon that wasn't as clean. Hence the swap. Any idea if it's reasonable to pull the motor and trans out through the top? Would be allot easier for me than pulling them down and out
@GarageBuiltHondas

That's usually how most full swaps are pulled. It's not ideal to pull just the trans from the top though.

How did you end up separating the driver side axel from the intermediate shaft since you removed the whole unit together?
