Great episode, Terry. Love the mechanical stuff as well as the travel side of your channel. Changing the Water Pump is something that can be done by 200 owners at home. The real challenge would be changing the starter motor. I recently watched a video on doing that.

Thanks Terry We travel all over and carry a new pump having 320k on the car. I bought and carry a cordless ratchet just for this job.

You got lucky with your pump. I had two fail around 70.000km each. Toyota Coolant and all. I believe the fan + hub is so heavy the bearing isn't too happy with the weight.

It always amazes me how different tools get different names depending on where you live. Even the humble spanner can get confusing. Say spanner to a Canadian and you get a perplexed look....oh, you mean a wrench...LOL. I love it!

@@JafffaAdventures just having a quick look, Bunnings, Total Tools etc call them multi grip pliers, but Temu, ebay etc call them water pump pliers

Hey Terry nice site, those maintenance tips and how to guides invaluable. A question for you and your subscribers if I could : What is the max kms on a 200 series, mine a 2010 going well coming up to 300ks. What is the highest around? What would you or your subscribers do with a failed engine, what or how new or recon? Would you consider talking the options on a future video? I know your site is prolonging that eventuality but it must be in the back of viewers minds like mine. Regards, Kel

There are a few Facebook groups specific to 200 series and the highest km question has been asked a few times on them. Can't remember seeing one over a million yet, but there were a couple in the 800 to 900 thousand range. I doubt I will talk options on engine replacements, unless I have to cross that bridge. In the meantime, I'll expend my efforts and energy on pushing that possibility back as far as I can. Thanks for watching mate!

Hi Steve Sounds very normal with your temp reading my one is a pre pdf and with new water pump and thermostat and old an new radiator runs over 91 degree and goes up to 100 degrees under full load read on the digital. I think that is a normal temp range. Forget the Toyo temp indicator in the dashboard it will not move much. Cheers

Hey Terry great video as always. I was interested to hear that the thermostat was rated at 76 degrees, does that mean your car generally runs at around that temperature? My mechanic said my thermostat comes open at 88degrees which is significantly different and tends to run from 86 - 93. I’m thinking that I need to find out what’s really going on. I recently put a new radiator in and that’s all good, but perhaps the water pump and thermostat is next. Can you say that following your change over that your temperatures have now stabilised? Cheers 👍

Thanks Andrew, I’m glad you found some value here. Yes, my normal operating temp is high 70’s, plus minus 2C after the change. As per the video, the temp has stabilised and my issue has been resolved. 86-93 is way hotter than the normal operating temps I see. Having said that, maybe that’s normal for your vehicle. If it were me, I’d like to see lower temperatures. Enjoy your journey mate👍😎

Yep. as per the vid, sorted my issue completely. For me, normal operating temp is 80C plus or minus 2 degrees or so and NO crazy fluctuations. Cheers and thanks for watching mate.

Great video Terry, any reason you didnt replace the small hose on the pump? Given the accessibility issues, I would hate that hose to shit itself in 6 months

I was balls deep in the job and it was either wait until I got a new hose or finish the job. I choose the latter. The hose was in decent shape, so I don't anticipate any problems, but now that I have said that....LOL. Cheers Paul.

Mate, the standard air box is absolute rubbish and one area that Toyota have a LOT to answer for. They say the standard box lets an acceptable amount of dust through. Rubbish, NO dust is acceptable in my opinion. I have had a Unifilter in place since I bought the vehicle and love it. You have to know how to oil and maintain it, but if you know that it's brilliant. I have a smear of white grease on the clean side of my air intake to monitor dust accumulation. That white grease has remained perfectly clean for 7 years now, and I take my vehicle in some VERY challenging and dusty places. Hey there young fella, in just got a scan gauge to help me monitor temps and pressures, it allows me to set alarms and I was wondering if you had some upper limits you look for as tell take for issues, water, AT, etc regards Tony

I do indeed Tony, but believe it or not sensor results can be very vehicle independent, even with the exact same model. For example, my 200 Series runs a water temperature of 76C all day long. I can’t recall a time when it went above 90, even under the most extreme of loads. Some of my mates cars (exactly the same model) run at 85C. What I would suggest is just monitor your own vehicle and get to know what’s normal for you. Once you have that pegged, you can set your own upper bands. Sorry this answer was not more specific but it’s the correct response I believe. Enjoy your journey, cheers👍😎

It’s important to note that I’m a back yard hack, not a full blown mechanic or tradie. For my purposes, it works well. It’s my second one. The first one’s gears stripped out after 3 or 4 years. These things have a 5 to 7 year warranty however, so I just took the dead one into Bunnings and they swapped it with a new one no worries. I’d get one again if I was in the market 👍😎

Once again an interesting video terry. Thanks for that. I noted that you mentioned the normal temp for your car. My 200 runs at about 88 most of the time and will climb under load to 93 + it will drop back to 87/88 immediately once the load is off. It’s been like that pretty much since new. I have replace the water pump,thermostat and radiator and made no difference. Any thoughts. Thanks steve

Thanks Steve, I appreciate the kind words. 88 would definitely be high for my vehicle, but it sounds like the baseline normal for yours and that’s sweet. Like I said in the video, once you establish normal for you, then it’s just a matter of keeping your eyes peeled for abnormal (for you) temps. Cheers👍😎

My 200 runs the same temps as yours Steve. 83 with no load, 87-88 with van on the back. And up to 93-96 up hills or when pushing it.

Thanks jayz. I use to be worried about it but now I have accepted the fact that it runs hot I just keep an eye on it. At least mines not the only one. Done 186000 and never missed a beat. BTW I should have mentioned that it does weigh about 3200 empty with all the bar work and accessories etc

Hi Terry How old is your plastic fan and the idler and belt tensioner ?? Water pump, thermostat, idle roller and tensioner and rip belt should be all in one job. Happy day Cheers

If you look back at my historical vids you will see they were all replaced recently (excluding the fan). It’s not necessary to do it all again in my case.
