Those air hammers are indispensable in this situation. My method is to drill or press out the rubber bit, use a hacksaw to cut one or two slots through the metal cylinder, then tap it out. Two slots can make it much easier sometimes.

Another great video Gérard. Just one thing as a viewer I would actually like to see you doing some more of the job I. IE When you cleaned up the control arm, grinding the bolt off. As these are the things that are going to stump is DIYers and would be great to see a pro actually do it so can take note.

Hello, Thanks for the comment. I know what you mean, sometimes I even have that type of footage but I choose not to use it as my videos were getting too long (in my opinion) I don't want to bore people with 20-25 min either :) but I will try and add a bit more in the future to help with keeping them compact. Thanks again.

The shop I work at we replace the entire control arm. That thing looks shot! The parts are obviously more but so much less labor.

Hello I am in the process of doing a similar job on my daughters Freelander TD4 but on the rear suspension and control arms. A 14 year old car. The ‘hard parts’ were corroded more than the item in this video BUT what you are seeing is fairly advanced oxidation but it is not ‘structural’. Using an air needle gun and shot blasting has restored the components to ‘like new’. No structural issues at all. These components await new bushings(all ordered) which I will press in. Before then all the arms are ‘bathed’ in rust remover even after shot blasting. They will be painted etc before the bushes are fitted. Obviously, I have time on my side. Time is the key in any business as ‘Time is Money’. Most components that are replaced on cars have some saveable parts.. but to do so becomes uneconomic due to labour costs. Nothing wrong with this fix at all...

@Gerard Burke. Hi Gerard, why did you use the chalk for? I didn't quite get it, lol hope it's not a dumb question. Thanks for uploading your video. M.D........

Not a dumb question Monty, the rubber bush is designed to take pressure in certain directions (if you look you can see one part is solid and the other has a break in it),that is why I lined the marks up from the old one to match the new one correctly. Thanks for watching.

@@GerardBurkeBurkesGarage Oh yeah, I just needed to be looking at what you ''were doing'' instead of just watching a video lol. Well I just bought new control arms and now I can't get the ball joint to bolt on because of the angle it's on. I'll probably have to use the Moog ball joints because they seem to have more tilt that the ones that came with (the control arms >>They're made at Detroit Axle, or they imported them under their name. I took a holiday break but I'm gonna head back out and get it finished today..

Liked it, did that car have a lot of exposure to road salt or lot's of off road use with a lot of corrosion on that wishbone near rear bushing.

Standard around these parts, a lot of people live close to the sea and roads are salted many times in winter each year.

Why not use the press for removal the old bush is then used for inserting the new one once the rubber is removed

I don’t see the reason in this case for marking the bearing position?it’s a plain round bushing so why the marking?
@deebee4206
@deebee4206 3 жыл бұрын
The bushing is designed to "absorb pressure" from a back and fourth motion, its gotta be pressed in a certain way. Otherwise I'm sure it'd be just a solid bushing without the slits.

You need the whole control arm not only the bushings.

Incorrect the job is over 2 years old now, at the time the customer was given the pricing options for both complete wishbone or just bush and opted for this one. It has not needed any additional repairs on the RHF wishbone since this job was done and has passed the National Car Test twice since.
