Control arms are a crucial part of the suspension system of your vehicle. They not only carry the load of the vehicle to the wheel, but they typically also maintain its alignment. Control arms are typically large and strong, so you may be surprised it needs replacing. They contain rubber bushings for smoother rides at the cost of eventual wear, or integrated ball joints that require replacing the entire arm when they wear. This video shows you how to install a new quality TRQ lower control arm with ball joint in your 2008-2012 Chevy Malibu.

Garage wanted $279 for the part and $440 to install it....I purchased one for $98 and Im doing the install myself. Im sure it won't go as simple as shown here...Nothing ever does but Im prepared to fight when it comes to $600 difference.

If I might add a step. And it is a pain in the butt step: On an 09 Malibu with the 3.6 flex fuel engine, you have to loosen the motor mount nuts, upper & lower, on the mount that is ahead of the forward control arm mount. You then have to raise the engine enough that the bolt can be removed. If not, you will never get it out. From what I understand, this problem is unique to this model / engine application. This will also require unpinning the forward wheel well liner at 3 places and folding it up to get to the upper nuts. This is required for both left & right control arms. One little plus is that the motor mount on the driver side is rubber. You can raise the engine enough to pull the whole mount out & cut a notch in it to let the bolt slide out with it installed.

I watched this video and several others and they all assume you have a car lift... If you came to this video as someone doing this yourself instead of as a mechanic, do yourself a favor and START by putting the balljoint in before putting the other connection points in. Trying to hammer the balljoint in with only 6-10 inches of space between it and the ground does not work.

Exactly, these videos are nice. But the average Joe who can't afford to pay a mechanic to do the work. Obviously can't afford a freaking 🙄 tall garage with a lift and probably doesn't have air tools as well.

Coffee cheers.. ☕ --- Malibu , G6, Aura - Control Arm Torque Specs: 2004-2012 --- 1. Loctite all bolts with a dab of medium is ok. 2. Grease balljoint stud lightly, grease zerk new joints after install or risk popping the seals once loaded. 3. Use line marks of original height before jack up the car so you can match height with jack under control arm before tightening the rear 32 ft lb bushing bolt to control arm and the front control arm to chassis bushing bolt. * Rear bushing to control arm 14mm bolt - 32 ft lb. * Control arm to chassis, 1 front bolt, rear 2 bolt uts. 2009 and Earlier - 37 ft lb. + 90°. 2010 and Later - 74 ft lb. + 90°. *Ball joint to knuckle: Step 1: 37 ft lb. Step 2: 2009 and Earlier - Loosen 3\4 turn. Step 2: 2010 and Later - Loosen 1\3 turn. Step 3: 2005 and Earlier - 37 ft lb. + 60°. Step 3: 2006 and Later - 37 ft lb. + 30°.

09 G6 2.4 and looks like im going to try and do mines. I wish i could just loosen up or take off the rearward bushing by it self. Is it possible?

The part I'm confused on is why tighten to the torque spec then tighten even more? I mean they have a spec for a reason or am I missing something?

Part of the torque spec is the rotation.

This is not what MY 08 malibu looks like on the front bolt......... There is a mount of some kind in the way making the 15min job a 2 or 3 hr job.

@@wesrolbiecki1607 Yea, just checked on my '05 with the V6, the mount will have to be removed, the motor will have to be supported as well before the mount comes off.

@@wesrolbiecki1607 Only the 4 cyl model doesn't have motor mounts in the way. My 05 V6 does. Put a block of wood on a jack and support the engine under the oil pan. Driver side mount is super easy to remove. Passenger side sucks

You guys must be stuck in 80's lol. Don't nobody load the suspension just to tighten the control arm bolts. Just tighten them and keep it moving

Ummm.....what about lifting the motor up an inch or two so you can move the motor mount out of the way to get that long ass bolt back in? They didn't show that.

Thank you someone said it I have a 3.5 and the transmission mount is in the way and I’ve been fighting it for 2 hours trying to not have to unbolt the transmission
