I found that a 10mm ratcheting wrench is really the way to go to get the top bolt back in. The bottom bolt I could reach with my ratchet. Thanks for the video!

Our 2016 4Runner needed the tail light assembly and Toyota quoted us $400. I did it for the cost of the new tail light (around $100). I needed a 10mm long socket which my neighbor had. It was a nut driver with a hollow middle so it went over the posts. My neighbor had to then use channel locks on the nut driver to get the nuts to turn. The nuts were too tight for a simple wrench. It was very easy to so with the muscle help and the perfect tool. I had to move all of the electrical over as the new assembly didn't have any. The old assembly electrical worked but the glass/plastic was cracked and it failed inspection. It came with a new gasket I put on after I moved the wiring. Thank you so much for your video!

Ty for the video. I decided to do mine immediately after watching. A flat tip screw driver or butter knife will pop that panel door off. Completed it in 10 minutes, no probs, very easy. I have an '05, which looks the same, minus the mid plug in on the tail light. The torque on the 2 nuts was maybe 8 lbs, hair more than hand tight. I thought the upper nut would give me trouble, but it was easy. Thanks again.

Really appreciate the video and the comments! Like the comments from Stephanie G, when I got underway I didn't realize I would need to move the electrical wiring and connector components in addition to the bulbs from the old assembly to the new assembly. Once I figured that out it all went smoothly. I used a 10mm off-set box end wrench that worked well and had enough length to provide necessary torque on the nuts both ways. Thanks again to Scott's Garage and commenters.

For anyone that doesnt know 2003 -2009 4runner tail lights are not all the same. If you have the mini lights, you have to replace entire assembly(just the brake lights) the blinker and reverse bulb can be replaced. Pass it on.

Where can I find an assembly that has a light bulb in the middle hole? I’m finding there are 2 different types of tail light assemblies. 1) with the wiring in the middle hole without a bulb. 2) without the wiring in the middle hole but WITH a light bulb.

Hi. Question for you. I have a 4Runner and would like to replace my brake light bulb… But in this video there is a wire going into the assembly just like mine has. In a previous video i saw of yours i saw you replace a bulb without the wires going into the assembly… so my question is where is the bulb to replace it? It doesn’t show a bulb in this video.

I replaced my right one also with generic aftermarket . It is no way as bright as the stock Toyota one . It drives me crazy so Im changing it .
